I'm leaning towards the C9 as it cops some classic organ sounds that I like (Doors, ELP, Deep Purple)...however the KEY9 has the Rhodes sounds of the 70's, thinking of Jan Hammer runs and such... Suggestions? I think the C9 is 70% and KEY9 30%Squatch57

But that said, I really want to try the new one that emulates a mellotron. D

Unless you have a specific sound in you mind that you are after, you'll want to try this and then that etc... It makes much more sense to buy a general synth pedal for the same money like a bit commander or a Subdecay Octasynth or if you are after more versatility something like a BOSS SY-300. Ggennation

The C9 has passable organ sounds, but the sound I use it for almost exclusively is the Mello Flute sound. I use it for Metheny-synth type sounds as well as the Abbey Road piano thing. I also have use it for the flute on Dance of the Fairy (or whatever that Xmas tune is called). As far as the B9, if you are into a range of organ sounds you have to have this pedal. I play all kind of stuff with that pedal...Keith Emerson, Jimmy Smith, Gregg Rollie, gospel, etc...and there is no way the C9 is that versatile of an organ pedal. I use the B9 on a lot of jazz gigs when there isn't a keyboardist, so I can do a guitar trio AND a organ trio jazz gig. The Key9 I use for a number of things, Come Together rhodes sound, Jan Hammer's Freeway Jam and You Know You Know. I use the marimba sound quite a bit for "island" type tunes...Buffet, Paul Simon, etc...I use a number of the electric piano sounds for 80's pop tunes. I think of the three, while the C9 seems to be the most well-rounded of the three, it's the most limited. It does a couple of unique things great and a lot of general things just passable. The B9 and Key9 are more specialized pedal and while they are made more for a direct reason they do a lot of things great. Although, whichever one you get, hit me up because I have a ton of settings I can share with you. I'm prepping for a rocking Cinco De Mayo type gig next week and we are doing Santana, War, and other great latin rock tunes. There are two other guitarists on the gig...and no keyboardist, so I'm copping as much Gregg Rollie as I can as fast as I can...that B9 is going to get a workout! Also, I have clips using all three of the pedals. I'll post them in a bit it might help you decide. But the bottom line is to asked yourself, "what sounds do I really want?". If you're not hell bent on a bunch of organ and rhodes/electric piano sounds, go with the C9...but if you are, determine which of the other two you want. For me, I have constant use for all three...and I am waiting for a back ordered Mel9 tooAndy S.

Joined Feb 25, 2006 Messages 8,398 Reaction score 4,659 Location Grand Rapids, MI At some point I'm going to do a demo vid of these pedals and some of the great keyboard parts I've learned over the last (almost) year now, but these are what I have today. The Key9...I used it for a show playing Whitney's I Have Nothing...and actually the group was so impressed with the sound that we dropped one of the keyboard players and I got the lead part! The keyboardist we kept played filler stuff under this main part. Here's a home clip...the Key9 nailed it! Here's a clip of it live at the show, I am pumped up in the mix, you'd swear it was the keyboardist playing it, but if you watch in the beginning you'll see him adjust his chair...so it's the Key9 you're hearing throughout...again the Key9 nailed it! Here's the C9 using the Tone Press setting for some gospel stuff... Here's the B9 live on David Bowie's Moonage Daydream. The version we played here is from the David Live album, meaning I copped the organ sounds and parts directly from that recording...the B9 nails it. The original organ sound has that nice tube-breaking-up, clogged-throat, distortion in the low end and then it also turns it into almost a swirly sound when played high,...that B9 is incredible. Seriously, look up the original David Live version and compare the two.Wolfboy1

I got it to add keyboards in various songs behind another guitarist. I think it does that very well. It also can sound excellent in a band situation. I would not trade it for any of the others. Being a big Moody Blues fan I would love to try the Mellotron one at some point.bluescube

Do you know if the B9 pedal can get close to the opening keyboard part in Toto's "Africa"? The real keyboardist is handling the xylophone part after the organ chords. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! SSloppyfingers

Silver Supporting Member Joined Dec 26, 2010 Messages 2,887 Reaction score 2,158 Location Los Angeles, California In a perfect world, EHX would have a pedal-like the TC in concept only-where it was 9 empty banks you could download any combination what's available on all 4 pedals. This way you could have a couple of keepers off of each and have 1 pedal to fill your needs. Oh wellStratobuc

Joined Mar 9, 2009 Messages 15,918 Reaction score 3,286 The C9 is the one you want. I bought the B9 when it was first available. It is way too strident and edgy for live work. The C9 works, and I have to keep the dry sound way up and the organ sound way back.WhoJamFan
Silver Supporting Member Joined Dec 26, 2010 Messages 2,887 Reaction score 2,158 Location Los Angeles, California I thought the organs on the B9 were better than the C9. A while ago, someone on the emporium wanted to trade a C9 for a B9, so I went and checked one out, and found it disappointing. Different strokes.Stratobuc

Joined Mar 9, 2009 Messages 15,918 Reaction score 3,286 For Organ variety - the B9 is more versatile. For gig ability - what you will need when you play live - the C9 is far superior. I use the shimmer patch 80 - 90% of the time, and the Continental for most of the rest. A little Melloflute, and an occasional Prog or Blimp organ. The C9 is the clear winner for my live rig.bluescube
