EN 54-18:2005 - Fire Detection And Fire Alarm Systems - Part 18
Overview
EN 54-18:2005 - “Fire detection and fire alarm systems - Part 18: Input/output devices” (CEN) defines requirements, test methods and performance criteria for input/output (I/O) devices that connect to the transmission path of a fire detection and fire alarm system. The standard covers devices that receive and/or transmit electrical signals necessary for system operation and/or interfacing with fire protection systems. It applies to standalone I/O devices and to I/O functions integrated into other devices, but excludes control and indicating equipment (e.g., repeater or fire brigade panels).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & definitions: Clear definition of what constitutes an input/output device and related terms (conditioning, recovery).
- Compliance & testing: Devices must be verified by inspection, engineering assessment and the tests specified in Clause 5.
- Environmental and mechanical tests: Includes dry heat, cold, damp heat (cyclic and steady state), sulphur dioxide corrosion, shock, impact, sinusoidal vibration (operational and endurance), and EMC immunity testing (referencing EN 50130-4 and EN 60068 series).
- Marking & data: Devices must carry visible markings (including EN 54-18:2005 reference, manufacturer, model, terminal designations and traceability code) and be supplied with technical, installation and maintenance data that define input/output parameters (voltage/current ratings, trip levels, logic levels).
- Monitoring of detachable devices: Remotely detectable means must signal removal of detachable devices from their mounting bases (fault signaling).
- Documentation & design data: Manufacturers must provide design documentation (drawings, block/circuit diagrams) and full signal processing documentation where applicable.
- Software-controlled devices: Additional documentation and development controls are required - functional program flow, module descriptions, memory usage and unique software version identification. Full source code may be requested by test authorities.
Applications and who uses it
EN 54-18 is intended for:
- Manufacturers of I/O modules, relay interfaces, control interfaces and integrated I/O functions in detectors or panels.
- System designers and specifiers who need to select compliant I/O devices for fire detection and fire alarm systems.
- Certification and testing bodies performing performance and EMC/ environmental testing.
- Installers and maintenance teams who rely on the required markings, documentation and monitoring functions for correct installation and lifecycle management. Use cases include alarm interfacing, remote monitoring/control of extinguishing systems, input from external sensors and outputs to ancillary fire protection equipment.
