Test your privately hosted websites using Local Testing.

Local Testing enables you to test your websites that are not publicly hosted or websites that are behind a proxy, firewall, or VPN on Live.

When do you need Local Testing?

You would need Local Testing to test the following types of websites on Live:

• Localhost or local websites
• Privately-hosted websites
• Internal websites hosted on internal environments
• Staging websites
• Non-production websites
• Websites behind proxy, firewall, or accessible only via VPN

How to enable Local Testing?

To use Local Testing, you need to install the BrowserStack Local app or run the Local binary. For instructions, see Set up Local Testing.

Why do you need to install the BrowserStack Local app or run the binary?

BrowserStack desktop and mobile devices can access your publicly-hosted websites directly. However, to access your non-public websites, the BrowserStack infrastructure requires some kind of network tunneling to access the private network where the website is present.

The Local Testing feature in Live creates a network tunnel between your private network and the BrowserStack infrastructure. This allows the Live desktop and mobile devices to access the non-public test website hosted in your internal environments. To create this network tunnel, the Local app or binary needs to be installed on your local system that has access to the non-public website.
