pkmp P Hi, Please could some one tell me if the distributor drive shaft spring is needed as I was replacing the drive shaft and lost the spring in the process. Would the engine run if I put the distributor back together with out the spring or would it throw the timing way out??!!!. #1 · Apr 27, 2013 Hi, Please could some one tell me if the distributor drive shaft spring is needed as I was replacing the drive shaft and lost the spring in the process. Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Apr 27, 2013 My guess is it would throw the timing out. Basically if it wasn't needed VW wouldn't have put it there. #3 · Apr 27, 2013 Get one on order. In the meantime short trips should be OK. Dave. #4 · Apr 28, 2013 Hi, I have put it back in and tried to start the engine but all I get is the occasional pop and a bit of smoke comes out of the carb. #5 · Apr 28, 2013 I think you need to set the timing and make sure you have the leads in the correct positions. #6 · Apr 28, 2013 Plug leads on wrong. #7 · Apr 28, 2013 I Have been trying to set the timing and to the best of my knowledge the leads are in the correct position!!. If any one has or knows where I can get step by step instructions on setting the firing order and the timing =?. Cheers. #8 · Apr 28, 2013 What dissy do you have? #9 · Apr 28, 2013 009 #10 · Apr 29, 2013  #11 · Apr 29, 2013 The "anti-chatter" spring is there to stop the distributor drive shaft from riding up in the bore, and 'chattering' against the drive dog at the bottom of the distributor. As it rises in the bore, it twists and alters the ignition timing, because it changes the position where the drive shaft meets the brass drive gear on the crankshaft. It can't lift very far, there are other things holding it down too, like the fuel pump pushrod and the tail of the pedestal, but as it moves up and down, the timing will flutter, and there is the possibility of the soft brass gear getting damaged. You may be able to temporarily use a spring out of a ball point pen, it's not really strong enough but if it's about the right length and diameter, it may help. Check that the drive is installed the right way around, (with no. 1 cylinder at the firing position), and make sure that the distributor is fully down in the bore, and the dogs mesh with the slot in the top of the drive shaft. tighten the clamp to prevent everything coming up and disengaging, then check where the rotor arm is pointing (it should point to the mark on the rim of the distributor body. If not, slacken the clamp and turn the distributor body so the mark meets the rotor arm, don't let the distributor come up out of the bore. Now check where the leads will be when the Distributor cap is fitted, No. 1 should be lining up with the rotor arm, swap the leads around to make it so. You'll still have to re-set the ignition timing, but a 009, (poor as many of the Brazilian copies are), will still be capable of getting the engine to run reasonably well, (mine did, I had a 009 on a 1600 twinport for a few years). #12 · Apr 29, 2013 Thanks for info much appreciated.
