maxis M Dear forum members, I'm all new to this forum since I don't own but I'm going to get E39 M52B28TU or M54B25 touring. Please, advice me which one is better. What I have heard so far is that M52TU is better than M54 in terms of torque, consumption while crusing and life expectancy. Is it true or not? Also I've heard that iron lining on the cylinders of M52TU has a different expansion coefficient, that's why all M52s and M52TUs were de-tuned comparing to M54, which has non-restrictive manifold. I'm quite well informed of the double VANOS cold start problem, thanks to the exhaustive analysis in your forum. Both cars have the extended BMW guarantee for 12 months and the full BMW service record available. Could you, please, advise me which engine to go after if the 52TU mileage is around 100K km Year2K and M54 is around 130K km Year2001? :dunno: At least I would like to get this BMW going for another 200K km . Is it possible with proper maintenance? Thank you for your feedback, Maxim #1 · May 26, 2009 Dear forum members, I'm all new to this forum since I don't own but I'm going to get E39 M52B28TU or M54B25 touring. It has more horsepower/ torque. They both should last about the same Im sure. As both are very reliable. It seems however that the M52 sees less problems. I would go with the newer E39 which has the M54. #3 · May 26, 2009 IMHO, 528i Y2K accelerates faster than 525i Y2001, according to the BMW manual: Y2K E39 M52B28TU wagon(touring), manual transmission: 193 HP@5500rpm, 280Nm@3500rpm. Emissions: Euro3, CO2: 235g/km. Weight: 1690kg Y2001 E39 M54B25 wagon(touring), manual transmission: 193HP@6000rpm, 245Nm@3500rpm. Emissions: Euro4, CO2: 235g/km. Weight: 1680kg 525i is somewhat 10kg lighter than 528i. Nevertheless, M52B28TU has 13% more torque. Maybe the power curve is less aggressive on M52, that is why M54 feels more sporty? Also M52B28TU was restricted in power (in the last post I was wrong about the different temperature expansion coefficient of die cast cylinder vs alu. piston) in order to run cooler and meet upcoming in Y2K Euro4 standard. Still marked euro 3 it has the same CO2 emissions. I would like to go with M54, but I feel, I'm missing still some data. Dear owners, could you, please, advice? Many thanks, #4 · May 26, 2009 I would say the lifespan is about the same. I've driven a m52 engine with 729,032 kilometers on it. #5 · May 26, 2009 If you live/drive in an area with alot of hills/mountains, then you should opt for the motor with more torque. Engines that need to be revved to get power out of will require more frequent service/maintenance. #6 · May 26, 2009 I would go with the M52TUB28 over the M54B25 simply because of the torque specs and the fact that the M52's been around for long time with many miles put on it to test the durability. Now if you had the choice of M54B30 over that, I would go with that. They're both very reliable engines as long as they're maintained regularly. The only difference is the more torque, weight and materials used. #7 · May 26, 2009 I went from an e46 330i to an e39 528i. I found the m52tu a little less exciting, but quieter and better for everyday use. The torque curve is friendlier and I was shifting its 5-speed less than I was shifting the 6-speed on the 330i. No issues other than vanos oscillation and smooth... In some ways the feel and economy of the newer n52 is more similar to the m52 than the peaky, louder m54. Note that I also had the zhp version. #8 · May 26, 2009 If I were you, I would try to scoop up a 530 with the M54B30 engine. More powerful and more torque too. The only downside (easily fixable) are the Vanos seals. Here's some reading about the M54B30 engine From 2001 to 2003 (when the 530 e39 was produced) it was in Ward's best engine annual list at the top. This is not a member saying that this engine or that engine is better. These are stats and facts. #9 · May 26, 2009 Thats exactly what i was referring to in my OP. Thanks for making me clearer!!!:p 0 Reply #10 · May 26, 2009 Thank you so much, gentlemen, for your answers. According to your recommendations, I'll pick M52B28TU if the car is in a good shape, however I'll check the condition of both cars and will decide then. I would go for M54B30 if one would be available for sale with the manual transmission and decent mileage. Thanks again #11 · Dec 22, 2009 get the M54B25 and stroke it to M54B30 you get newer engine and with 300Nm of torque #12 · Dec 22, 2009 Please explain...? Are you talking about re-boring the heads/ replacing the 2.5L heads with the 3.0L heads? And, replacing the 2.5L pistons with the 3.0L pistons and cam? I think you would also need the 3.0L's throttle body, intake boots, and MAF... Thanks! Jason 0 Reply #13 · Dec 22, 2009 Thread from May... wtf? Also, yeah, it's cheaper to get a 2.5 litre and have it stroked, rather than buy a 3.0 litre? Not following that logic at all. #14 · Dec 23, 2009 (Edited) M54B25 and M54B30 are some what identical- differences include crankshaft, camshaft, stroke and compression ratios. Stroke the M54B25 gain additional HP but keep/use original engine electronic e.g DME/ECU M54B25: BORE=84mm, STROKE=75.0mm, COMPRESSION=10.5:1, HP=192@6000RPM M54B30: BORE=84mm, STROKE=89.6mm, COMPRESSION=10.2:1, HP=231@5900RPM 0 Reply Insert Quotes Post Reply
