EXP FarmingBy Precocious TurtleSamuel ClaibornAngie Harvey+260 moreUpdated: Oct 5, 2018 8:13am UTC

Perhaps the one staple challenge in almost any JRPG is finding the right enemy that gives the most amount of experience points in the least amount of time. In Dragon Quest XI, certain enemies have a metal version that exists solely for this purpose. They are however very rare and it often takes too much time just hunting monsters and hoping these rare enemies will appear among them.

The enemies in question are the Metal Slime, Liquid Metal Slime, Hardy Hand, and Metal King Slime. The Viscious versions of the Metal Slime will start making an appearance after the World Tree's fall in the latter half of the game. As for the locations of rare monsters, they sometimes appear in the following areas:

  • Metal Slime: Heliodor Region, Gallopolis Region, Dundrasil Region, Ruins of Dundrasil, The Champs Sauvage, Insula Orientalis.
  • Liquid Metal Slime: Heliodor Region, Dundrasil Region, The Champs Sauvage, The Royal Library, The Battleground, Insula Orientalis.
  • Hardy Hands: Mount Huji, Laguna di Gondolia.
  • Metal King Slime: Fortress of Fear

There is one particular method that effectively allows you to gain over 130,000 EXP per battle but it does take some work. That method is what we'll discuss next.

For this method, you'll need Erik's Critical Claim (found in his Guile skill tree) ability and Hero's Pep Up (found in his Luminary skill tree) ability. You most likely won't learn these until much later in the game, so just wait until then.

The next component for this method is the pep power ELectro Light, an ability made availabe when Jade, Hero and Sylvando are all pepped up. What this does is it replaces the monsters you're currently fighting with much rarer ones.

As for the location, I believe this can be done anywhere but I usually stick to Dundrasil Region.

That being said, what you're looking to get are two Liquid Metal Slimes and a Metal King Slime. This is the best possible group you can hope for with King Metal Slime giving 70,000+ EXP per kill and the Liquid Metal Slimes give 30,000+ EXP apiece.

Defeat the Metal King Slime with Erik's Critical Claim ability and clean up what remains however you like, while hoping they don't flee. Also be sure to save your game once you have the necessary characters pepped and ready for Electro Light. That ability does not have a 100% success rate and can fail quite often. Reload and try again if you don't get the monsters you want.
