    Thank you to the congressional leaders, the U.S. Department of State, and the remarkable athletes who joined us last week to celebrate Sports Diplomacy and the partnerships that sustain it. FHI 360 hosted a reception at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center to highlight the growing impact of Sports Diplomacy and the opportunities that major international events (such as the 2026 Men’s World Cup) will bring to the United States. We are honored to support the State Department in designing and delivering Sports Visitor and Sports Envoy exchanges that build trust, promote fair play and open competition among overseas audiences, and create lasting connections across borders. We are grateful to Representatives Bill Huizenga and Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State Deputy Assistant Secretary Stefanie Williams, and Sports Envoys Briana Scurry and Joanna Lohman for their leadership, reflections, and insight into the impact of Sports Diplomacy programs.     “The Sports Envoy program was an incredible opportunity to learn about Brazilian culture through the process of spreading awareness about the sport of American Football. Throughout the program, I was exposed time and time again to the power of sport and its ability to connect people all around the world... I am extremely grateful for the experience.” – Brennan Scarlett, former NFL linebacker 🇧🇷 🏈 Through an FHI 360-organized Sports Envoy program, Former NFL linebacker Brennan Scarlett and Ashlea Klam of the U.S. National Women’s Flag Football team engaged Brazilians aged 10-18 from local communities through football clinics, workshops, and public-facing events. The Envoys participated in the “NFL in Brasa” tailgate party-style fan festival, which featured the world’s largest Super Bowl viewing party outside of the United States. 🇺🇸 American Sports Envoys are current and former professional athletes and coaches who travel overseas to lead clinics, workshops, and community outreach developed by U.S. embassies and consulates in collaboration with the Sports Diplomacy Division of the U.S. Department of State.     “This was my first time building a robot and I liked it very much. I’m very, very happy. I’m going to tell my mom and friends about this special training and try to create the same opportunities at home. It’s hard for one person to do a big thing in their country. But I can tell my teachers and my friends what I have learned and they can help me do more. I can’t live here and learn this for two weeks and go back to my country and do nothing.” – Sarah, 16, Central African Republic Sarah, along with the other participants, worked as a team to learn, answer questions, and complete projects during courses in STEM. As part of the STEM coursework, Sports Visitor participants in one course built robotic vehicles that compete to see which vehicle can push the other off of the plywood competition platform. The robotic vehicles increase in sophistication over the four-day course. The youth athletes begin with a single motor, add more power, and eventually write computer code to control their vehicles. We might think about voice activation for ease of hands-free use, but it’s also essential for users with visual impairments.
