We’re all at the mercy of volatile fuel prices and it’s rarely a fun ride. Being in the transportation industry, we’re affected by this reality as well.

We tackle this fuel cost variability challenge with a fuel surcharge – an amount added to the freight invoice, above the starting point of the freight base rate. Please see the table below for more details.

CN 7403

Mileage-based fuel surcharge - Carload traffic

The fuel surcharge is mileage-based and calculated monthly, based on the Energy Information Administration (EIA) U.S. On-Highway Diesel Fuel (OHD), starting from a base rate of $2.30. US. CN 7403 varies based on the two following types of commodities moved:

Bulk commodities (PDF) (coal, fertilizer, and grain) – surcharge varies by $0.00575 for each $0.025 change in the price of OHD. All other carload commodities – surcharge varies by $0.0060 for each $0.025 change in the price of OHD.

CN 7404

Percent-based fuel surcharge - Intermodal

CN 7404 is published weekly and is based on the average price of the Energy Information Administration (EIA) On-Highway Diesel Fuel (OHD). When the OHD price rises above $1.25 per gallon, the fuel surcharge will be calculated starting from a base of 2.0%, rising 0.23% for every 3 cent increase in the diesel price.

CN 7405

Percent-based fuel surcharge - Intermodal

The fuel surcharge is calculated monthly based on the average On-Highway Diesel Fuel (OHD) of two months prior (e.g. February surcharge is based upon December’s average OHD price). When the monthly average OHD price exceeds $1.25 US per gallon, the fuel surcharge is applied and will be calculated starting from a base of 2.0% of the linehaul freight charge(s). The fuel surcharge will increase/decrease by an incremental 0.23% for each $0.03 change in OHD.
