Zero pictures with the kit lens?

Given the core market of this lens (first timers with their first prime) it's amazing so much of the dpreview coverage "misses the mark" with no info answering the basic question:

Is it better than the kit?

Like1Jan 26, 2020permalinkMiddleman316

What? The "mark" in this write-up is clearly how it compares to the XF equivalent.

The side by sides of the exact same image answer that question comprehensively.

I'm actually kind of astonished at this complaint.

Like13Jan 26, 2020permalinkRevenant

I guess he means that the XC and XF versions are basically the same lens, optically speaking, only targeted at different users (entry-level and budget-minded people vs. enthusiasts).

So, given that few people would be choosing between the two versions, and they're optically the same anyway, it would make more sense to compare the XC with a lens aimed at the same users. This is how I interpreted the OP.

A direct H2H lens comparison gallery? Color me impressed, Chris and Jordan.

DPR take note. This is how ALL lens review galleries should be shot (against a comparator lens). Gallery images shot in isolation with a single review lens are much less useful.

Like29Jan 25, 2020*permalinkLazlo55

Absolutely, this is the only way to understand lens quality, same shot, minutes apart, with different lenses, so the lens character can shine.

Like3Jan 26, 2020permalinkMyRealityMyReality

No. A blind test is the best. Knowing what each lens is and the lens price can cause picture choice bias. Even if you did not know the price and what each lens was and you were looking at the same number of photos from each lens, you might end up choosing the best photos just be guessing, because you have a 50% chance.

The magician! that is in Fujifilm camera/optics. These guys simply are the masters of the craft. What a lens, what a gem!!!

Like1Jan 25, 2020permalinkretr01976

I agree. You have to own one to truly understand what a gem it is. It easily beat some of my best most coveted FF glass and L gems. It’s pixel sharp, contrast and color are “cinematic”, bokeh is beautiful, focusing is rocket fast and completely silent, it’s metal and the entire package is tiny.

Like1Jan 25, 2020permalinkmischa72

Which one? This is a comparisan, so which one is the gem? Would like to know, as for me it would be the choice between a brand new XC and a used XF ;-)

Is it just me or is the cheaper one a bit better?

this particular copy seems to be.

it's entertaining though when people obsess about corner sharpness, moire, fringing, and all else, because they totally should in this forum.

"this particular copy seems to be"

And that's the story with Fuji, I've sent back more of their lenses than I can count and I'm still not happy with my 55-200mm. I never had any cause for complaint with other companies. But the good ones are truly superb.

Like0Jan 26, 2020permalinkRevenant

This is really an issue with most lens comparisons based on only one sample of each lens: are the differences we see between the lenses bigger than the differences caused by sample variation?

Yes, the cheaper one appears to be sharper.

So far, you avoided direct comparisons. Is that a new trend?

Like2Jan 25, 2020permalinkbadi

It is a head to head comparison of 2 lenses claiming/having similar optical formulas so it was kind of necessary here if they wanted the article out this way. I like direct comparisons, so i hope we'll see as many as possible...

Did you do some flare tests? Are the coatings the same?

Like1Jan 25, 2020permalinkAoi Usagi

There was some flare from the street light images, but nothing definitive. I wish they would take a photo of both the lenses side by side, so we could see the color reflection of the coatings. Of course, there might not be a visible difference.

Like0Jan 25, 2020*permalinkChris NiccollsChris Niccolls

I didn't see any difference in the coatings at all. All the mounting bezels and flocking inside the lens look identical too. I'm pretty sure they simply used the same factory assembly and mounted it in aplastic shroud instead.

Like7Jan 25, 2020permalinkmarc petzoldmarc petzold

Yes, it looks exactly the same - about that nightshot with street lamp - into one picture the flare is to the bottom, into the other, to the side. It looks anyway exactly the same, from the lens rendering.

I do hope, that Fujifilm would release the XC 23mm F2 Lens, as said before. 35mm is the perfect focal length for repotage, street, landscape, etc...everything into between. My X-E1 would see much more usage with this lens, the Zoom is not so my thing.

Good Light.

Panther, you're the Freak of the Week, on DPR seriously. In almost every News Thread, you do post Pro-Sony, and against all odds, all the other brands - this is confirmed.

I explained only something about Distortion to you. Have Fun, but you're spreading incorrect, self-generated Rumors. Nothing against the 16-55 2.8 G,i've said only as example, that without digital correction, this Lens does have a) much distortion (according to 1300 bucks price) and 2) that it doesn't resolve that much at the edges - that's all.

Yes, all APS-C Lenses from 16mm do suffer from distortions, you didn't get the message (again!) that there's a difference between a 400-500 bucks vs. a 1300 bucks Lens - that isn't "hate", that is a matter of fact, nothing else. Nothing against Sony here.

Good Light.

Like0Jan 26, 2020permalinkpanther fan

@marc petzoldSo confused that you are replying to the wrong comment?

Like1Jan 26, 2020permalinkggc

I have the XF version, good lens, sharp side to side even at f2, but really mediocre corners even at F8. I prefer the 27mm F2.8 anyway.

Like0Jan 25, 2020permalinkpanther fan

Fuji uses digital distortion correction in this lens quite heavily. This means the corners are sharper wide open than they could be otherwise. But they don't improve much when stopping down. As distortion stays the same at F8.

For me, that is a good compromise, however. I think the corners are quite decent and having them already decently sharp wide open with such a small lens is a nice benefit

Like2Jan 25, 2020permalinkmarc petzoldmarc petzold

That post doesn't make sense - complaining about digital distortion correction inside a sub 200 USD Lens, useless. I could argue, even the 18.5/2.8 Lens for instance with the Leica T does have distortion correction, any lens nowadays, via Lens Profile (almost), wheter via LR, PS, C1, etc. or invisible inside the Lens Profile added via RAW.

FYI, the Sony G 16-50/2.8 for 1300 bucks looks bad in distortion terms, without correcting, for such a high price - so what?

Good Light.

Like1Jan 25, 2020permalinkpanther fan

@marc petzold

Again you misread my post. Distortion correction is the answer to why it doesn't sharpen up much when stopping down.

In general for same sized lenses. Lenses with physical distortion correction - less sharp corners wide open, sharpen up when you stop downLenses with digital distortion correction - allow for sharper corners wide open, but limit the improvement you can have stopped down because of the slight degradation by the digital correction stays

Again I am not against this compromise, as said in my original post"For me, that is a good compromise, however"

It is just an explanation to ggc why the corners don't sharpen up like on "classic" lenses

PS: Why do you always bring up the Sony 16-55? Yes it has high distortion, so does the Fuji 16-55? Both chose the same compromise because it is a good compromise

Like4Jan 25, 2020*permalinkHenrik HelmersHenrik Helmers

@panther correcting distortion in software does not improve corners with one aperture and degrade corners with another. Furthermore the areas stretched or compressed will depend on the type of distortion corrected.

Like1Jan 25, 2020permalinkDay Hiker

@Henrik: Panther did not say correcting distortion improves the corners at some apertures and degrades it at others. I implore you to read more closely. Panther indicated that when correcting for distortion wide open, you will see less dramatic corner improvement when you stop down due to the fact that much of the possible correction is already done wide open.

My guess is that if raw images can be captured with this lens @ multiple apertures and no distortion correction added, that we might see a traditional corner sharpness improvement as the apertures decrease.

Like3Jan 25, 2020permalinkggc

it's isn't related to digital correction.

At f2 corners are ugly, and they do sharpen up, at F11 they are acceptable. Too late for me.

At f5 (full open) the 16-50mm is much better in the corners than this 35.

Like0Jan 25, 2020permalinkmarc petzoldmarc petzold

Eno, digital lens correction correlates not for being lossless - it comes at a price, that's also the reason, for instance the "fine" 16-55 2.8 G Sony Lens, that it'll never reach 24 MP into the corners, that's exactly my Point here, nothing more, nothing less - therefore that Zoom as example for digital correction via built-in Lens Profile.

Further, FYI, i do prefer manual "classic" lenses, because they don't rely on digital corrections, hence at that time, there wasn't "digital" being onto the Screen. It's nowadays way easier for Lens Creators/Designers, to take a average Lens, and make it "good" with digital corrections - way cheaper, than to add more (high quality, costly) Lens Elements itself, to deal with distortion(s), LoCA, or other-wise an much more sophisticated Lens Design from the Pike up, which would being more costly (R&D) to develop.

Hope you understand that topic better now.

Good Evening.

Like2Jan 25, 2020*permalinkHenrik HelmersHenrik Helmers

@panther wrote "[Distortion correction] means the corners are sharper wide open than they could be otherwise. But they don't improve much when stopping down [to F8]."

What @panther probably meant was that the distortion correction *makes the corners worse* when shooting wide open, and prevents the lens from improving when stopping down.

And of course the corners will improve when stopping down, every lens I have ever owned does.

Like0Jan 26, 2020permalinkpanther fan

Before everybody guesses here what I meant. And marc petzold spews is anti Sony hate, although all modern 16-xxx APS-C zooms go for the same compromise, let me clarify what I meant.

IF YOU KEEP THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF A LENS THE SAME (no extra elements)You are faced with the following problem:You can design corners that are sharp, but have distortion orYou can design corners that are softer but are distortion-free

While digital distortion correction costs some sharpness, the corners with distortion correction still end up sharper after correction wide open.

But if you stop down and thereby reduce many of the lens aberrations like spherical aberration, chromatic aberration, etc... corners tend to get sharper. The corners with physical correction now catch up a lot, due to a reduction in all the flaws they had before.

Like0Jan 26, 2020permalinkpanther fan

The distorted corners also catch up, but because you were able to reduce many aberrations already wide open the gain isn't so high. Also because you still face the problem of degradation by digital correction you end up with slightly softer corners even if you were able to correct everything else 100%That's why in many cases lenses with optical distortion correction catch up or exceed lenses with digital correction once stopped down.

Since wide-open performance is of high priority and lenses in APS-C and M43 are often designed with a specific size limit in mind, many designs in those systems rely on digital distortion correction

Like0Jan 26, 2020permalinkKarroly

I have noticed several times with my gear that there is a significant difference in the quality of the lens distortion correction between in-camera correction and correction in PP, especially with entry-level and mid-range cameras. Fost speed reason, the in-camera correction is "quick and dirty". I don't know about high-end cameras...

Like0Jan 26, 2020*permalinkggc

So... without images is an empty discussion. here for one week the samples, at every aperture, NOT CORRECTED against distortion.

here is a wetransfer link: https://we.tl/t-nAb0aQvi9i

if you don't trust in it, just scan it with virustotal.

Corners are nearly good at F11. Central and side sharpness is excellent starting from F2.

Like0Jan 27, 2020permalinkpanther fan

@ggcI am not exactly sure for or against what you try to argue with those samples. But showing them without lens correction, of course, makes them look worse.

Most of the "soft corner" isn't in the frame after you apply lens corrections, so there is obviously no need for it to be sharp. Many manufacturers even allow near-full black vignetting there because they won't show up in the final picture.

That said yes a little bit more corner sharpness would be nice. I am not sure if all samples of the 35mm behave this way. The RAW conversion also looks kinda weird
