According to the lens comparsion done by DPreview here:

https://www.dpreview.com/articles/8249297755/sony-rx100-vi-vs-canon-g5-x-ii-vs-canon-g7-x-iii-which-has-the-best-lens

The G7XIII is sharper than the G5XII.  I could also see chromatic aberations on the G5XII at wide angle.  On the other hand, the comparison review done by cameralabs, the G5XII came out looking better.

What's the real verdict here?  I'm only focusing on image quality.

Given the fine quality levels of both cameras in question, I doubt you would discern a difference in image quality between the two, in actual use.

My own personal take is that DPR's or any other test charts, may or may not truly correlate to real-world shooting.

However, since you stated you are only focused on image quality, perhaps a one-inch sensor camera is not the best choice for you?

Full-frame cameras offer higher image quality, but typically are not nearly as compact, except for the Sigma FP.

Just my two cents.....

The real verdict is that sadly there is a bit of sample variation on these tiny and complex lenses.   If you demand pixel peeping perfection, you probably won't be happy with any compact zoom camera.

Confusing indeed. As is this one from PhotographyBlog:

complete smudge @ wide angle

Maybe the lesser zoom G7XIII is slightly better?

Boy do I agree with this!

When I was trying to decide which compact to get in 2018, DPR had a nice comparison between the G7Xii and the G1Xiii.  It wasn't about test charts and data.  Rather, the review had a selection of scenes identically shot with each camera so you could compare real world photo results....you could see the field of view available, sharpness, how bokeh was rendered and so on.  This was incredibly helpful to me because I went into reading the review wanting the G1Xiii but what I unexpectedly found was that I actually preferred what I saw from the G7Xii, which I ultimately bought.  The final convincing factor was a photo that showed a scene shot at the G1X's maximum 72mm and the same scene with the G7X's max of 100mm.  I realized that extra FL made an important difference to me, and I wanted that extra FL more than I wanted the G1X's viewfinder and a couple other features I liked.

As for image quality with a 1" sensor, it is helpful to be familiar with and be satisfied with its obvious limits.  As a person who is also concerned with image quality, I know I would not be entirely happy if my only camera had a 1" sensor.  But since I have other larger sensor cameras, my small sensor cameras are useful, fun, and have their place in what I shoot.

I own the G5X Mk2 and I would say it has the essentially same IQ as the G7X Mk3 in normal use and both are very good useful cameras.

I also have a cellphone, as well, that is very good but it is awkward to use in bright light and when zooming quickly. I think the G5X mkii is better in this sense than my cellphone. I bought the G5X mkii camera for the compact size it is than includes the viewfinder which, like my phone, can fit in my coat pocket.  The phone is handy and weighs less but the camera is quicker/easier/trusted to use when in the chaos of photography.

I have larger expensive interchangeable lens DSLR/mirrorless cameras which have higher IQ capability but they are big and bulky.  They can also attract unwanted attention in some situations.

However, between the G5X and G7X cameras I doubt you will be able to tell the IQ difference in real world use.

The G7XIII is sharper than the G5XII.

I agree. Looking at the comparison, I would say that the G7xIII is sharper overall (in average). But especially sharper at the longer end (85mm and 100mm) where the G5XII is rather soft.

I had the G5XII for a short time right after release last summer. It was bigger than I thought and not very pocketable (IMHO). The softness at the long end and the plastic lens ring didn't actually help.

Now I have a G7 X Mark III. Lighter, smaller and more pocketable than the G5XII. Just what I need. Metal lens ring - Yes! The silver finish is just beautiful. And I appreciate the sharper lens espesially at the long end. Yes, I can confirm it (having had both): The G7XIII lens is better than the G5XII overall. At most fl's wide/mid they are very similar and rather hard to tell the difference. But at the long end (85/100mm) the G7XIII takes the lead.

I could also see chromatic aberations on the G5XII at wide angle. On the other hand, the comparison review done by cameralabs, the G5XII came out looking better.

What's the real verdict here? I'm only focusing on image quality.

The real verdict? Depends on what you need. EVF? Longer reach or sharper lens? Better portability/pocketability? Mic input ? But on image quality alone, no doubt, my vote goes to G7XIII.
