k8alifa Hello. I recently purchased a used 2017 G63 with 50k mileage on it. Took it an A service and unfortunately I found out front axle leakage on both sides of the axles. The MBenz dealership gave me an estimate of around $3500 to fix it which is bullshit so i decided to go for a 3rd party mechanic which was much cheaper but i’m still concerned that they might not do the job as well, maybe due to its complexity? i’m not sure, just too skeptic of the whole process. there’s no clicking and whatnot, only the grease leakage as you can see in the pictures below. 2622472 2622474 could you guys give me some tips and things to consider when taking it to the mechanic? and how much would the procedure cost/ and what to change? just need to have an idea because i’m new to this. really appreciate it! Thanks! #1 · Mar 3, 2020 (Edited) Hello. I recently purchased a used 2017 G63 with 50k mileage on it. Took it an A service and unfortunately I found out front axle leakage on both sides of the axles. Did the dealership indicate there was an issue and recommended a fix? Just trying to make sure I understand who diagnosed the issue. That entire ball has to be able to move in the joint so it needs to be lubed appropriately and that's what it looks like to me and not "leakage" per se. I am not a professional mechanic but my suggestion would be to look under another G-wagen for comparison. Just find one for sale on a car lot near you. Good luck to you though. On another note, I usually don't have any hesitation taking my G to a non-dealer or even a non-German auto repair center if I know the mechanic is above average. There are a few nuances with these vehicles that may require a G-wagen expert but a lot of it is "just nuts and bolts". The engineering design hasn't changed since the 1970's which makes these vehicles so much easier than a similar year Mercedes or other brand. ~Corey #3 · Mar 3, 2020 This is my right front axle. Looks "worse" than yours. I hope this eases your mind a bit but I certainly would hope that other forum members will jump in with their opinions as well.

#4 · Mar 3, 2020 Most likely the CV boot (inside the ball) has broken. The CV grease (black) mixes with the axle ball grease (clear-ish) and creates a runny mess that oozes out of the swipe seal too quickly. 50 K miles is really early for a broken CV boot. Age-wise it isn't unexpected though. It does seem weird that both sides started leaking at the same time. Is there a possibility that someone filled the axle ball with the wrong grease? Or thought it was like a different make that that uses oil in the axle balls? Are the wheel bearings tight? If so, the axle ball and drive shaft can be removed as a unit and the CV boot can be replaced without disassembling that chunk. Not easy, but easier than redoing all of those bearings. #5 · Mar 3, 2020 Here is a link to a discussion regarding your same issue: Grease on Ball Joints in the Front Axle ~Corey #6 · Mar 3, 2020 Some grease on the ball seals is normal, although yours seems a little excessive. As Alan said, it is really odd for both sides to fail simultaneously. Has you G always been dealer serviced? The wrong grease can indeed cause excessive leakage from the swipe seals (ask me how I know). BTW, if the diagnosis really is blown CV joint boots on both sides, $3500 from the dealer seems like an very reasonable price given the work/parts that is/are invloved for a dealer repair. #7 · Mar 4, 2020

The front axle swivel housing protects the CV joint and its rubber boot. There is a grease fill-plug on the side of the housing and it should be filled with regular, multipurpose, grease, around 2/3 full. The grease is supposed to gradually seep out to keep the chromed spherical surfaces lubrcated and to keep water and dirt out. It has no other purpose. If the housing is over-filled, more grease will come out, as in your pictures, since the turning of the steering will squeeze the inside space and force it out. Nothing to worry about. Just wipe it off and you might want to check the grease level in the housing y removing the plug and feeling inside with your finger to the end of a pencil. About 1/2 - 2/3 full is fine and then re-check every 2 years. 0 Reply #8 · Mar 4, 2020 (Edited) some useful info here: http://fourbyfourclub.com/Manuals/W463249Axels.pdf The rotating CV joint boot will fling outward any grease in contact with it and what you experience is most likely a result of having overfilled the swivel housing with grease. The amount of grease shown on page 16 of the above linked document is not too far off (should be a little more than that, but not much). It will be distributed around the inner surface of the housing and seep out gradually through the swie seals, onto the chromed spherical surface when the steering is turned. The wheel and king-pin bearings have seals and this grease does not mix with any other - it's just to keep water and dirt out of the housing. (Over-filling can create too much drag on the CV joint rubber-boot and damage it.) The amount of grease showing in your pictures is what you might expect to find after 1 year of operation. However, it does appear rather dark/black and looks like it might be Molybdenum Disulphide (Moly) Grease, which is a thinner grease for propshafts and CV joints (!!) etc, and would therefore be more likely to seep out. A Lithium, multipurpose grease would be of a pale colour and be a little thicker in consistency. If you open the fill-plug (circled in red in pic below), you may be able to take a sample from inside and see what grease was used. Unfortunately, if your inner CV boot is damaged, then you might expect to find Moly grease in the housing. Otherwise someone has filled it with the wrong grease, perhaps thinking that it was for the CV joint. Having said that, the CV joint grease used by MB is greenish in colour, so hopefully your CV Joint boots are intact. 2622656 Insert Quotes Post Reply
