Joined Oct 10, 2017 Messages 4 The G95 grew little bigger than the G85. So I think the Gx9 will be a Good choice. Some reviews on the G95 seemed to be mixed. Saying that it's a toss up between the G85 and G95. Any thoughts on this? Ken, Yes, I am new here and I see all your great helpful ideas.retiredfromlife

I think the main benefit of the G95 over the G85 is the 20mp sensor and higher res rear screen.(some reviews have said the rear LCD is better) If I did not have the G85 and I wanted a similar camera I would pick the G95 if funds were available. But I not sure if there would be a big difference over the G85. If I were to choose between the G85 & Gx9 I would pick the G85 as for me better ergonomics and EVF Edit Fixed some spelling and added clarification regarding the rear LCD Last edited: May 28, 2019SamoyedPapa

Joined Sep 3, 2011 Messages 816 Location Southern California Do you have a means to try out the G85/95 and GX9? The difference in size and grip make for quite a different shooting experience, and it becomes a matter of personal preference. The size lens that you mount may also sway you one way or the other, with the substantial grip of the G85/95 giving you much better balance when mounted with the larger zoom lenses. I have both styles (G9 and GX7), and I use the larger body with my zooms, while the rangefinder style always has a compact prime lens attached. I’ve used the GX7 with the f/2.8 zooms (12-35, 35-100), but that’s as large a lens as I care to use with that body. The 12-100 and 100-400 zoom lenses balance much better with the substantial grip and heft of the G9. Addendum: I should add that some folks like me do not care for the exposure compensation dial of the GX9, which is clickey and harder to turn than the larger, smooth dials on the G85/95. While you can set the front or rear non-dedicated dials of the GX9 to operate exposure compensation, I much prefer the G85/95 dial haptics. YMMV. Note also that the rear screen of the GX9 is limited to tilting, which I actually prefer, to the swing out screen of the G series bodies. Last edited: May 27, 2019Mike Wingate

Joined Oct 12, 2013 Messages 493 As stated above, the cameras have significantly different ergonomics. Still image quality should be fairly comparable. If video is important, I'm sure there are others here who can compare them. G95 has weatherproofing. You yourself should find a store to get a feel for them yourself. If that's not possible, you can give more details about what you are looking for, what you've used in the past, and why you want to make a change. There are certainly people on this forum who can give their thoughts, but they'll need more input. In short, the GX9 is better for some people, the G95 better for others. It depends on individual preferences.jimr.pdx

Click to expand...I agree the larger lenses get bulky on my GX85; even the 12-60 gets 'tippier' than I like. The additional HGR2 grip helps a lot with this, and adds very little extra size or weight. When primes are used it can stay behind.

The dial haptics (and also the feel of the AFL button) made me go for the G85 when I tested both that and the GX9 in a store. Before I went there, I was almost certain I would get the GX9 but holding it for a few seconds was enough to decide "no, not for me". So like a few others said: try them both.

Joined Jan 28, 2012 Messages 444 I think it would depend what you want from a camera. But I definitely agree with the above comments that the two cameras will have different ergonomics. I have and really like a GX9. But it has some limitations. The EVF is just not very good. It's perfectly useable or me for framing, but by current standards it's not up to par. It doesn't have a physical option for a cable release. Works with cell phone app, but at times I really like a physical shutter release, and it's not an option. It's not weather sealed. I've been thinking of adding either a G9 or G95 for general purpose use when I care less about size. The above said, I find the GX9 a wonderful travel/street type camera. Pretty small, light, and inconspicuous. I have it with me almost all the time. For me it's a really fun camera. But unless size/weight are important to you, the G95 is probably a more well rounded general purpose camera. At least in the US, prices are such that the G9 seems a much better buy right now.Carl Lilley

Look at it compared to a T6i

Click to expand...The ergonomics are really a personal preference and cannot be forced even with everyone else's recommendations. I dumped a lot of gear to pick up a G85 recently. It had everything I prefer except the tilt-only screen - better EVF, wx seals, more space for buttons &c - so I went all in. And it was a poor fit for me, sold it within two months! Guess I'm a GX sort despite all those features I prefer. I had the same problem with OM-D bodies, as I found the EP5 to be a better fit; wish I had taken that learning experience to heart before losing cash on the G85 deal.

I owned a G7 briefly as well a couple of years back, impressive fit in hand and cool features yet it didn't inspire me. I always used SLR designs before (Pentax, G1, GH1) but since GX1 and GX7 the rangefinder type is more suited to me.. Somehow.

Got a GX8 and GX9 after and realised I always spent money to get them to feel more like my G7. My G80 just feels 'right'. so sold the GX9 and getting a G9 nowEven now the E-M1 Classic speaks to me..

I went full circle, from a crop DSLR, full frame DSLR (6D), crop mirrorless (EOS M), rangefinder mirrorless (GX8), and finally to my G9. It's nice to be back homeKBeezie

It's nice to be back homeAbout the same here, and would likely choose the same when I'm considering something as my "workhorse" My camera history, chronologically with some overlaps (And not counting the nearly 40 different film cameras ranging from a Minox B, Hasselblad 500CM, Olympys Pen-FT, , 5x7 Linhof, etc I played with during 2005~2008) Kodak DC3200 (1.3MP) in Late 90s/2000s Canon Digital Elph S110 (2.1MP) Canon Powershot G3 (4MP) - Somewhere around this time I had a Canon DV camcorder, was stolen from me by a neighbor while I slept at home Canon Digital Rebel 300D (6.1MP) Pentax K10D (10.2MP) (to carry over most of the manual focus adapted lens, and cheaper body) Olympus Pen E-P3 (12MP) (same reason, even more adaptability and live view was a godsend) - Finally picked up some Native autofocus lenses for MFT in between here Olympus E-M5 Mki (16MP) (owned two, first one died, replaced it with another, kept the locked shutter one, sold working E-M5i and E-P3) Olympus E-M1 Mki (16MP) Infrared converted Olympus E-M1 Mki (16MP) Unconverted Pansonic GH1 (in order to use for video hacked) Pentax Q10 (was stupid cheap for a small pocket mirrorless, mainly gets use if I can't bring my bag) Panasonic GH4 With the Q10 I already have, I can't see myself going back to something akin the Pen or Panasonic GX85 size for my regular use camera. (Presently I still own the two E-M1s, the locked up E-M5i, Pentax Q10, and both Panasonic GH1/GH4). But there are days where I would desire just being able to throw the camera in one jacket pocket and a lens in the other, but not enough days for me to justify the trade off. SMy G9 is pretty much the same size as my first crop DSLR, and that's a very good thing. In saying that, I was very surprised at how much I liked my GX8, and would have bought the 9 if it had been a true successor. The G9 is simply better ergonomically, and more comfortable to hold/use than both though. So that would point me straight to the G90/95 Click to expand...

Click to expand...Yes, ergonomics truly are idiosyncratic; one person's rose is another's thorn. My photography can kind of be lumped into 1) travel/street, and 2) landscape. The later is often at or near the coast. For me, the GX9 is terrific for the travel/street role. For that I'm strongly prejudiced towards smaller, lighter, and less conspicuous. If the GX9 had a little better EVF (and I don't need the largest or highest resolution), weather sealing, and a physical shutter release mechanism it would be almost perfect for me. Of course then it would probably be GX8 sized. It's not so great for landscapes in harsh conditions when I want to shoot on a tripod.
