Overview

The G3X is a large glass flight display system designed for installation in experimental amateur-built and light sport aircraft (LSA). The non-certified G3X Touch system offers pilots easy-to-read, easy-to-use, high-resolution 10.6-inch flight displays with split-screen functionality and a host of advanced interface options – all at a great price. Large Touch Display On the exterior, G3X Touch offers a sleek and clean appearance with a large 10.6-inch display. Since G3X Touch is scalable and easily configurable, pilots can choose to install up to three G3X Touch displays in their panel. Incorporating the latest in infrared touchscreen technology, the display offers a resilient, high-resolution, sunlight readable screen that demonstrates Garmin’s industry-leading experience in integrated flight decks. The touchscreen provides a simple user-interface that is easy to learn and offers efficient access to information. The bezel contains four dedicated buttons and two rotary knobs, which provide increased efficiency in performing common in-flight functions like direct-to navigation, setting altitude, changing heading or radio tuning. Enhanced Functionality and Situational Awareness The G3X Touch display provides pilots with an intuitive split-screen mode with the option to view PFD, MFD, and engine information on a single display. Synthetic vision (SVX™) is a standard feature on G3X Touch, which provides a rich, three-dimensional depiction of terrain, obstacles, water features, the runway environment, and more. G3X Touch conveniently displays VFR Sectionals and IFR Enroute Charts, which provide pertinent information in-flight while on an IFR or VFR flight plan. A version of G3X Touch also includes SiriusXM Aviation Weather and Radio capability, which allows pilots to receive NEXRAD, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, winds aloft, and more. SiriusXM Satellite Radio is also accessible via G3X Touch; both weather and audio capabilities require purchase of a subscription from SiriusXM Satellite Radio Inc. The new GDL 39R (remotely mounted ADS-B receiver) is also compatible with G3X Touch and offers pilots an excellent solution to display ADS-B traffic and subscription-free weather. Seamless Integration and Familiar Interface G3X Touch interfaces with Garmin’s industry-leading experimental autopilot, which gives pilots autopilot control through the touchscreen interface, while still supporting the optional, stand-alone GMC 305 autopilot control panel. G3X Touch gives pilots access to all autopilot modes from the touchscreen display, including indicated airspeed hold, yaw damper, flight director, and level modes. Touchscreen control functionality for the remote-mounted GTX 23 ES transponder is provided on the display, as well. Team X has incorporated a user-interface that is similar to other Garmin touchscreen aviation products, so pilots can easily find pertinent in-flight information quickly. New Comm Radio and AOA Indicator Support Tucked away behind G3X Touch, pilots can choose to integrate the new GTR 20 remote transceiver for added functionality. The GTR 20 offers pilots an ideal solution for a clear, powerful communication radio and intercom, which is controlled from the G3X Touch display. The 10-watt radio provides advanced features such as 3D audio, stereo intercom, stereo music input, alert inputs, and standby frequency monitoring. Even more, frequency identification is available on the G3X Touch display so identifiers such as “KOSH ATIS” are displayed as the pilot tunes the frequency. For pilots who have incorporated the GTR 200 panel mount comm radio into their panel, full touchscreen control is also available through G3X Touch. The combination of the remote comm transceiver and transponder provide pilots the option to fly VFR with everything they need controlled from the display of G3X Touch, saving space and offering an immaculate panel. Additionally, the new G3X Touch can display angle of attack (AOA) information when installed with the GSU 25 ADAHRS and GAP 26 probe. The new optional GI 260 angle of attack indicator provides pilots with a visualized indication of AOA using a combination of colors and chevrons and may be mounted on the glare shield in the primary field of view. The AOA system offers progressive audible and visual alerts as the aircraft nears the critical angle of attack. In conjunction with G3X Touch, the GI 260 is designed to give pilots a quick, at-a-glance understanding of AOA during critical phases of flight and offers audible alerts during high-workload situations.

The G3X GDU 460 is perfection in a small box. It is brilliantly designed, intuitive to use and can be configured to do just about anything. I can turn it on and look at it all day. It is so much easier to use than all of the old school avionics I grew up using. We are very fortunate that Garmin created a panel display for retrofit. The programming interface is easy to use as well. The only gripe would be that it is designed to work in the Garmin ecosystem. Most of their communication protocols are proprietary. Integrating non-Garmin systems is doable, but they do not work seamlessly with the G3X. It is best to build a system with primarily Garmin components to get the best overall integrated experience out of the G3X system.

I ordered this as part of an upgrade to a Garmin G3X system for my experimental. My plane has had a PS Engineering 8000B, and I expected to have to rewire everything for the GMA245. Much to my delight and surprise, the 245 is both tray and connector compatible, and it worked perfectly just sliding it into the old panels tray. Only had to add two CAN bus wires to the existing wiring to make it part of the G3X architecture. Nice job, Garmin!

BE ADVSED !!! The Garmin G5 unit is exactly what I wanted and needed to to replace a failed standby HSI. It wasn’t clear that the standard mounting hardware was not included wit the G5 unit. It was not listed in the accessories section of the ad, which displays alternate mounting hardware. This resulted in project delay and additional freight charge. Be advised that you need to order the mounting hardware when ordering the G5.

As others have noted, the G5 needs an installation kit since it uses a nonstandard bracket to connect the device to the existing holes of a 3-1/4 cutout. Once installed and plumbed to the pitot static lines, it works great. I dont have a G3X system but do have a GTN650xi, and running a serial line from the 650 to the G5 gives it a full featured HSI display with nav data that can be toggled with the PFD display. So, a nice two-fer surprise when I was mostly interested in having a backup attitude display with its own solid state AHRS.

Way to pricy and when I installed it I immediately got a Critical Battery Fault message and my unit shut down. Garmin support told me to get a new one. Aircraft Spruce told me that my G5 just needed an update. Once I did that, my unit was fine. Not sure whats wrong with Garmin, but Aircraft Spruce was great and very helpful.

Battery worked fine. To install you need an Allen wrench the same size as your battery screws. This winch also fits the Allen screw in the center bottom hole on the G-5. The one screw holds the G-5 in the panel. Slide it out and replace the battery. Very easy.

The GSA-28 is a good servo, I hope. But I was not lucky - she did not work a single day and broke down. The PFD started showing the message Servo Hardware Fault a year after installation, although I did not turn on the autopilot even once. And one more thing: GSA-28s have insufficient power, for example, the Pitch-servo cannot raise the elevator of stabilizer on my Cessna-182 when its on th ground. I have ordered one new and got it during 10 days - its very good!

Expensive but works. Be advised the Garmin design for the servo stop bracket to rest over the servo bracket is poor at best. Some have followed the documentation to leave a poorly mounted bracket. Others have cut and trimmed the bracket, others have shimmed, others have completely omitted the bracket all together (I dont think is a wise thing to do). The point is this particular issue doesnt live up to the standards I expect from Garmin.

Aircraft Spruce gets 5 stars, Garmin 2. The batteries are very expensive and unreliable. The last one failed after 2 years of light use. Garmin needs to find somebody else to make their batteries. To be fair, the battery installed easily, worked properly and I received what I expected. Unfortunately, it may not last very long. At least they are readily available and easy to replace.

This Garmin product has been quite the disappointment. I have 3 G-5’s installed and two batteries have already become unserviceable and needed replacement at a cost of over $400 USD. After installing the two “new” batteries neither of them will attain a 100% charge and continue to discharge at a very high rate requiring me to regularly charge the batteries while connected to an external charger. All three G-5’s have the latest firmware update too. The strange thing is that the original battery installed in one of the G-5’s continues to function as advertised. I would not purchase another one of these batteries until Garmin addresses this problem which they are already aware of.

Q: I have a G3X installed and I know that the G3X touch and the plain G3X system cannot comunicate but is there a way that I can use my plain GDU as just a GPS and then I connect the touch up with my excisting module's?

You would have to run the GDU 370/375 completely separate with its own GPS signal and rewire the G3X touch to be the main display with your existing LRUs.

Yes, you would still need to purchase the connector kit in addition to the harness.

You would need the GDU 460/465 Install Kit (11-12646), GSU 25 Connector Kit (11-11433), and the GMU 22 Install Kit (11-12213).

For the VFR harness all of the components including the engine leads are included minus connection to an auto pilot and audio panel (which have there own part numbers on our list). When ordering a G3X system, we will send you a worksheet to fill out for your unique setup.

Q: I see there is 3 different pitot tube options. What is the difference between the regulated and unregulated pitot tube?

The heated, regulated version of the GAP 26 (010-010704-20) has a small box with the regulating circuitry that is mounted near the probe. This version of the GAP 26 probe is also equipped with an internal temperature sensor which the regulating circuit uses to only supply as much current as the probe needs to remain ice free. This current, of course, varies with the operating conditions.

Q: To measure fuel capacity, what can I use for the Garmin G3X?

Per the G3X manual -Any capacitive fuel quantity sensor (requires external conversion to voltage or frequency) -Any resistive fuel quantity sensor -Any voltage-output fuel quantity sensor -Any frequency-output fuel quantity sensor All of which use custom user-defined calibration (voltage or frequency to fuel quantity)
