GETTING STARTED

A suggestion for Nick’s project (Một gợi ý cho dự án của Nick)

1. Listen and read. (Nghe và đọc.)

• Duong : I phoned you around 9 p.m, but no reply.
• Nick : Oh, I was doing some Internet research on Vietnamese legends for my project.
• Duong : Have you found one you like yet?
• Nick : Not really. Can you suggest anything?
• Duong : We have lots of legends, folk tales, and fables. A popular one is the lengend of Lac Long Quan and Au Co.
• Nick : Oh yeah? What’s it about?
• Duong : Well, it’s about the origins of the Vietnamese people.
• Nick : Who are the main characters?
• Duong : Lac Long Quan – the dragon king of the ocean, Au Co – a fairy, and their sons.
• Nick : And what’s the story?
• Duong : Let me see… Lac Long Quan married Au Co. She gave birth to a bag of one hundred eggs, which produced one hundred baby boys.
• Nick : One hundred baby boys? That’s a lot.
• Duong : And some years later, Lac Long Quan missed the sea so he took fifty of their sons to the sea, and Au Co took the others to the mountains. Those boys were the ancestors of the Vietnamese.
• Nick : What an interesting legend it is! I think I’ve found the subject of my project!

• Dương : Mình đã gọi cho bạn lúc 9 giờ tối qua, nhưng không có trả lời.
• Nick : Ồ, mình lúc đó đang tìm trên Internet về những truyền thuyết của Việt Nam cho dự án của mình.
• Dương: Bạn đã tìm được cái bạn thích chưa?
• Nick : Thật ra thì chưa. Bạn có đề nghị gì không?
• Dương : Chúng mình có nhiều truyền thuyết, truyện dân gian và truyện ngụ ngôn. Một cái nổi tiếng là truyền thuyết Lạc Long Quân và Âu Cơ.
• Nick : Ồ vậy sao? Nó nói về gì?
• Dương : À, nó nói về nguồn gốc của người Việt Nam.
• Nick : Ai là nhân vật chính?
• Dương : Lạc Long Quân - vua rồng của biển cả, Âu Cơ - một nàng tiên và con trai của họ.
• Nick : Và câu chuyện là gì?
• Dương : Để mình xem... Lạc Long Quân kết hôn với Âu Cơ. Cô ấy sinh ra một cái túi với 100 cái trứng mà ở ra 100 bé trai.
• Nick : Một 100 bé trai à? Nhiều thật đấy.
• Dương : Và vài năm sau, Lạc Long Quân nhớ biển nên dắt 50 người con xuống biển, và Âu Cơ dắt 50 người con còn lại lên núi. Những đứa con đó là tổ tiên của người Việt Nam.
• Nick : Thật là một truyền thuyết hay! Mình nghĩ mình đã tìm được chủ đề cho dự án của mình rồi!

• 3. What legend did Duong recommend to Nick? (Dương đã giới thiệu cho Nick truyền thuyết nào?)=> A. A legend about how Viet Nam began. (Một truyền thuyết về việc Người Việt Nam bắt đầu như thế nào.)
• 4. Who was Lac Long Quan? (Ai là Lạc Long Quân?)=> C. The dragon king of the ocean. (Vua rồng của biển cả.)
• 5. Where did Au Co take half of the sons? (Âu cơ dẫn một nửa số con đi đâu?)=> A. To the mountains. (Đi lên núi.)

b. Match the words to their meanings. (Nối các từ sau với nghĩa của chúng.)

• 1 - c: title - the name of the story (tên của câu truyện)
• 2 - d: genre - the type of the story it is (thể loại truyện)
• 3 - a: main characters - the people the story is about (người mà câu truyện nói về)
• 4 - b: plot - the content of the story (nội dung câu truyện)

c. Find the information in the conversation to complete the table. (Tìm thông tin trong đoạn hội thoại để hoàn thành bảng sau.)

d. What does this sentence from the conversation express? (Câu văn dưới đây trong bài hội thoại thể hiện điều gì?)

• Nick: What an interesting legend it is!Thật là một truyền thuyết thú vị!
• Do you know what kind of sentence it is? (Em có biết đó là kiểu câu gì không?)It is an exclamatory sentence. (Đó là câu cảm thán.)

Lưu ý:

• Câu cảm thán được dùng để biểu lộ sự ngạc nhiên hay cảm giác mạnh. Chúng ta dùng What trong câu cảm thán:What + a/an + adjective (tính từ) + danh từ đếm được + S + V!What + adjective + danh từ không đếm được/ danh từ đếm được ở số nhiều + S + V
• Chúng ta không nhất thiết phải sử dụng tính từ hoặc một chủ ngữ và động từ trong câu cảm thán.

2. Match the words with their definitions. Then listen, check and repeat. (Nối các từ sau với định nghĩa của chúng. Sau đó, nghe, kiểm tra và nhắc lại.)

• 1 - C. traditional, imaginary short story that teaches a moral lesson; typically using animal characters (một cách truyền thống, câu chuyện ngắn mang tính tưởng tượng mà dạy một bài học đạo đức; điển hình sử dụng những nhân vật động vật) — fable (truyện ngụ ngôn)
• 2 - D. an imaginary story typically involving magic or fairies, usually for children (một câu chuyện tưởng tượng liên quan đến phù thủy hoặc thần tiên, thường là cho trẻ em) - fairy tale (truyện cổ tích)
• 3 - B. a very old, traditional story from a particular place that was originally passed on to people in a spoken form (một câu chuyện truyền thống rất xưa cũ mà ban đầu được truyền cho nhiều người ở hình thức nói) — folk tale (truyện dân gian)
• 4 - A. an ancient story about brave people magical events that are probably not true (một câu chuyện cổ về những người dũng cảm, những sự việc phép thuật mà có thể không có thật) - legend (truyện truyền thuyết)

3. Game: Guess the story

Trò chơi: Đoán tên câu chuyện.

a. Think of a legend, folk tale, fable or fairy tale you know. Complete the table below. (Nghĩ về một truyền thuyết, truyện dân gian, truyện ngụ ngôn hay truyện cổ tích. Hoàn thành bảng sau.)

Genre Thể loại	Fable (truyện ngụ ngôn)
Main character Nhân vật chính	A hare, a tortoise (con thỏ, con rùa)
Plot Cốt truyện	The Hare and the tortoise have a race. (Con thỏ và con rùa có một cuộc chạy đua.) The hare is fast but he loses because he is arrogant. (Con thỏ nhanh nhưng nó thua vì nó kiêu ngạo.) The tortoise is slow but he wins the race because he understands himself and his compertitor. (Con rùa chậm nhưng thắng cuộc đua vì nó hiểu bản thân và đối thủ của mình.)

b. Work in pair. Interview each other and try to guess the title of the story. (Làm việc theo cặp. Phỏng vấn nhau và cố gắng đoán tên của câu chuyện.)

• B: Đó là truyện cổ tích.
• A: Ai là nhân vật chính?
• B: Lọ Lem, chị kế của cô ấy, và hoàng tử.
• A: Nó nói về điều gì?
