Ghostwriter, ghostwriting và ngôn ngữ học mô tả

Quả thật tôi không ngờ entry của tôi giới thiệu các định nghĩa về đạo văn của plagiarism.org cách đây vài hôm lại có thể thu hút nhiều người đến đọc, tranh luận (và cả lên án, ném đá nữa) nhiều đến thế. Theo kinh nghiệm của tôi, sự thu hút này không phải do đề tài nóng, hoặc vì tôi viết hay (!), mà là do trong bài tôi có nhắc đến sự khác biệt giữa định nghĩa mà tôi giới thiệu với cái định nghĩa mà GS Tuấn nhắc đến trong bài viết trên blog của ông về "tác giả ma". Phải giải thích thêm một chút về lý do tại sao tôi lại nhắc đến định nghĩa mà GS Tuấn sử dụng. Cách đây ít lâu, có lẽ khoảng cách đây 2 năm (?), tôi có tham gia vào diễn đàn thảo luận của trang "giáo sư dỏm" - một trang khá nổi đình đám khi mới ra đời vì dám đem rất nhiều vị có tên tuổi, chức vụ cụ thể ra phân tích để kết luận rằng đấy là những người ... dỏm (!) theo định nghĩa của trang này. Tôi vào đó không phải vì quan tâm đến việc ai dỏm, ai không, mà là vì có bạn bè cho biết tôi và đơn vị của tôi (lúc ấy tôi còn đang làm giám đốc một trung tâm nho nhỏ trong một đơn vị thuộc khối công lập) đang bị vu khống và ném đá ở trong ấy, bởi một người đã có thời gian tôi mời đến làm việc với đơn vị của tôi. Vì vậy, tôi phải vào trang đó chỉ để đòi hỏi người vu khống và ném đá tôi phải đính chính và xin lỗi. Trang "giáo sư dỏm" ấy ban đầu cũng làm cho tôi có ấn tượng khá tốt, vì mục đích nêu ra có vẻ rất cao cả, đó là làm trong sạch nền học thuật/khoa học của nước nhà. Một điều tôi cảm nhận rất rõ qua thời gian trao đổi trên đó là những người lập ra trang này rất ngưỡng mộ GS Tuấn, có lẽ vì ông có nhiều bài đăng trên các tạp chí có trong danh mục của ISI và có IF cao. Điều này thì tốt thôi, nhưng thỉnh thoảng tôi còn cảm nhận sự ngưỡng mộ ấy hình như làm cho họ có cái nhìn thiên lệch, dường như những gì GS Tuấn nói hoặc viết ra thì họ đều xem là chân lý cả; điều này không hợp với không khí tranh luận khoa học. Nhưng thôi, đó là quyền của những người lập ra trang web này; tôi là khách, không đồng quan điểm thì rút lui thôi. Trong những lần trao đổi ấy, có một lần nào đó tôi nhắc đến ghostwriter theo cái nghĩa mà tôi hiểu theo "định nghĩa" của turnitin, mặc dù lúc ấy tôi còn chưa biết đến sự có mặt của trang plagiarism.org. Nói cách khác, tôi hiểu ghostwriting là một loại đạo văn nặng nề nhất, và ghostwriter (mà hiện nay đang được dịch là "tác giả ma") là một kẻ "đạo văn" hàng đầu, vì đã sử dụng hoàn toàn một bài của người khác mà không bỏ ra bất kỳ một chút công sức nào, trong khi những loại đạo văn khác thì còn có chút xíu lao động. Và ngay lập tức tôi bị sửa lưng, bị chê là hiểu sai, hiểu ngược. Bị sửa lưng như vậy, tôi cũng khá ngỡ ngàng vì tôi vẫn hiểu về ghostwriter và ghostwriting như thế trong một thời gian khá lâu rồi. Tôi bèn kiểm tra trên mạng, thì thấy đúng rồi, chỉ cần gõ "ghostwriter" là google có thể cho ta hằng hà sa số các định nghĩa tương tự như định nghĩa mà GS Tuấn đưa ra trong mấy bài viết của ông. Vậy có nghĩa là lâu nay tôi hiểu sai mà không biết ư? Thắc mắc lắm, nhưng vì định nghĩa về ghostwriter sờ sờ trên mạng đúng là như thế nên tôi chấp nhận là mình sai và mừng là đã có người chỉ ra chỗ sai của mình để mình học hỏi. Quá tốt. Nhưng rồi thỉnh thoảng lại thấy có người hiểu sai (?) giống mình, mà đấy là người bản ngữ mới chết chứ. Nên vẫn cứ còn vương vấn mãi cái thắc mắc đó trong đầu. Vương vấn, cho đến khi tôi tìm thấy định nghĩa về ghost-writer trên trang của plagiarism.org mà tôi đã đề cập đến trong entry vừa rồi. Đó là lý do tại sao tôi đã thốt ra mấy dòng cảm nghĩ liên quan đến GS Tuấn và về biển học mênh mông vv (xin nói thêm là câu "biển học mênh mông ..." là tôi viết cho chính mình để răn mình đấy các bạn ạ, chả hiểu sao mà một số bạn lại đọc ra rằng tôi mỉa mai GS Tuấn, rồi thì ngụy biện, chụp mũ, ghen tỵ nữa chứ, đủ cả!) Nhưng cũng nhờ có những người xông vào trang blog của tôi mà tranh cãi, rồi lên án, ném đá nữa chứ, nên tôi mới bỏ công ra tra tìm cho thật kỹ về cách dùng của ghost-writer và ghost-writing, và hiện nay có thể (tạm) kết luận như sau: - Định nghĩa ghostwriter hay ghostwriting như GS Tuấn nêu ra là không có gì để bàn cãi. Ở đây không có chuyện tôi nói GS Tuấn sai khi sử dụng định nghĩa đó. Không hiểu sao một số bạn lại đọc ra cái hàm ý đó trong bài của tôi nhỉ? - Điều đáng nêu ra ở đây, cũng là mục đích của tôi khi đem so sánh định nghĩa của turnitin với định nghĩa (rất phổ biến) mà GS Tuấn nêu ra, đó là cách hiểu ngược lại cũng không sai! Tóm lại, vấn đề không phải là "ai thắng ai" như thời chiến tranh lạnh, mà vấn đề là việc chấp nhận nhiều cách hiểu; tức là, không có ai đúng ai sai, mà cả hai cùng đúng! Nhưng nếu một trong hai phía cứ nhất định bên kia phải sai (vì mình đúng mà!), vì cách hiểu của mình phổ biến hơn (!), hoặc logic hơn (!), thì ... xin thưa là tôi phải đầu hàng ngay thôi ạ, không tranh cãi nữa mà làm gì, vừa mất thì giờ vừa không đi đến đâu hết. Xin kết thúc entry này bằng vài nguyên tắc của ngôn ngữ học mô tả (descriptive linguistics) mà tôi đã có thời là "tín đồ". Xin nói trước là tôi diễn đạt theo lời của tôi, chứ không trích dẫn ai, nên có thể không hoàn toàn chính xác từng lời của các nhà ngôn ngữ học lớn, và xin mọi người đừng bắt bẻ ở đây nhé vì tôi viết cho tôi và bạn bè, chẳng đem nộp nó đi đâu để nhận được thành tích hàn lâm gì cả, cũng chẳng phải để làm mẫu mực cho người khác (sinh viên) học theo. Những "nguyên tắc" đó là: - Chúng ta không thể bắt ngôn ngữ phải vận hành và phát triển theo ý mình, cho dù điều mình nghĩ có thể là rất hay, rất logic. Language is, and not "should be". - Sự đa dạng ngôn ngữ (đa dạng về cách hiểu, cách phát âm, cách sử dụng vv) là một thực tế luôn tồn tại. Người Bắc có thể nói "thế à?", người Nam nói "dzậy sao?", cả hai đều đúng và chẳng có ai sai, cũng chẳng có ai "logic" hơn hay "thanh nhã" hơn! - Sự biến đổi ngôn ngữ diễn ra hàng ngày, hàng giờ, nên một từ ngữ đầu tiên có thể có nghĩa này, nhưng sau một hồi sử dụng thì lại thành nghĩa khác, điều đó chẳng có gì là lạ cả. Tóm lại, với tư cách là người sử dụng ngôn ngữ - tức là tất cả chúng ta - thì thái độ duy nhất đúng là quan sát và ghi nhận, vậy thôi, chứ không phán đoán ai đúng ai sai. Riêng tôi, thì tôi có một giả thuyết nho nhỏ về việc ghost-writer bị chuyển nghĩa từ "tác giả thực" (viết mà không đứng tên) sang "tác giả ... dỏm" (đứng tên mà không viết), như sau: - Khi các trường đại học muốn dạy cho sinh viên về thái độ đúng đắn đối với việc đạo văn (= ăn cắp văn của người khác) thì cái mà họ quan tâm không phải là ai là tác giả thực (tức là con ma trong từ ghost-writer), mà là người phạm tội ăn cắp văn (ở đây là sinh viên nộp bài của người khác). - Vì vậy, khi từ ghost-writer được dùng để chỉ các sinh viên đạo văn theo kiểu nhờ người khác viết bài rồi lấy đem nộp (hoặc cũng có thể là đi tìm bài có sẵn ở đâu đó rồi chép nguyên xi để nộp) thì lúc ấy "ghost-writer" đang được hiểu theo nghĩa: "One who is accused of ghostwriting", còn ghostwriting thì được định nghĩa là "a kind of plagiarism where the wirter submits something that somebody else has written", vậy thôi. Chú ý rằng định nghĩa ghostwriting mà tôi mới nêu ở trên là hoàn toàn đúng, nhưng không phân biệt rõ ai là người viết và ai là người đứng tên. Vì vậy, khi các trường bắt được những trường hợp vi phạm vào ghostwriting như vậy thì chính người nộp bài (các sinh viên, tức người ăn cắp văn của người khác) bị gọi là "ghost-writer" chứ không phải là ai khác. Bởi vì "con ma" (theo nghĩa là tác giả thực của tác phẩm) nó đâu có ra mặt đâu mà bắt được, và cũng chẳng cần bắt để làm gì. Các trường chỉ cần quan tâm giáo dục sinh viên của mình thôi chứ! Wow, không ngờ tôi viết một hơi dài thế. Thôi thì cũng viết một lần cho rõ mọi việc, rồi thì xin hoàn toàn chấm dứt vụ ghost-writer với ghost-writing ở đây nhé. Và rất cám ơn bạn Raphy đã theo dõi cuộc tranh luận với những nhận xét rất khách quan, đúng mực. Là một điều mà có lẽ người VN chúng ta cần phải học hỏi để cải thiện văn hóa tranh luận của mình.     Tôi cho rằng bài viết đã có sự nhầm lẫn giữa thuật ngữ "tác giả ma" bên blog của GS NVTuấn và bên này. "Tác giả ma" được nói đến bên GS NVTuấn có nguồn gốc là "ghost authorship" (chú trọng về quyền tác giả). Còn ở blog này thì "tác giả ma" xuất phát từ "ghost-writer" (chú trọng về việc ăn cắp văn của người khác). Theo tôi nghĩ, đó là hai thứ khác biệt, nên việc nỗ lực giải thích như ở trên là gượng ép và không cần thiết. Thay vì chỉ ra sự khác biệt của 2 thuật ngữ gốc, tác giả lại cố gắng biện luận và đưa ra giả thuyết này kia thì lại không ổn cho lắm.Cheers,HT

    Chào Huy Trần,Ghost-authorship là danh từ trừu tượng của ghost-author; mà ghost-author thì là đồng nghĩa của ghost-writer bạn ạ. Những cái này ai biết tiếng Anh thì đều rõ thôi mà.Một cách chính xác, ghost-authorship không thể dịch là "tác giả ma" mà phải dịch là "tình trạng viết thuê/sử dụng bài viết của người khác", bạn ạ.Chẳng hiểu bạn dựa vào đâu để bảo rằng tôi cố gắng biện luận? Nếu bạn nói điều này vì những định kiến có sẵn thì tôi nghĩ tốt nhất là không nên trao đổi thêm nữa vì sẽ chỉ vô ích thôi.

    Disclaimer: Tôi không có định kiến gì với cả hai: GS Tuấn và TS Anh. Tôi chỉ nói dựa trên những gì tôi đọc trong bài blog trên và những gì tôi biết. Tôi cho rằng không có gì sai khi dùng thuật ngữ "tác giả ma" thoát nghĩa từ "ghost-authorship" (mặc dù có thể chưa chính xác 100%) vì 1) nó ngắn gọn và 2) GS Tuấn đã nêu kèm theo định nghĩa dài cho nó. Dịch dài dòng như TS Anh cũng không có gì sai. Song thật bất tiện khi mỗi lần muốn đề cập đến ghost-authorship thì phải dùng một cụm từ lê thê như vậy.Tôi nói sự khác biệt ở trên là về ý tứ chứ không phải sự khác biệt về nghĩa đen. GS Tuấn nói về tình trạng ghost-authorship vì ông quan tâm về chuyện tác giả trong xuất bản bài báo. Còn ý nghĩa TS Anh diễn giải ở trên thiên về tình trạng đạo văn (plagiarism). Hai cái này mặc dù có liên hệ (tôi hiểu ghost-writer = ghost-author), nhưng trọng tâm của 2 người đã khác nhau như trên thì không cần gì biện luận để thuyết phục người đọc như trong bài blog. Cách hiểu ghost-writer/ghost-author theo TS Anh (nếu tôi không hiểu lầm) là người đạo văn (copy văn của người khác???), theo tôi biết, là không phổ biến và cũng không chuẩn theo cái nghĩa gốc của từ "ghost". Theo cách hiểu thông dụng thì ghost-writer không dùng để ám chỉ "người sử dụng văn hoặc bài người khác không trích dẫn" mà ám chỉ "người thực sự có viết bài văn/báo nhưng tên tác giả của bài văn/báo đó là người khác. Giả thuyết của TS Anh là không hợp lý. Bởi vì thế nên tôi mới đã nói là không nhất thiết phải biện luận và đưa ra giả thuyết để lý giải như thế.Cheers,HT

    Huy Trần:Tôi đăng comment của bạn lên vì tôn trọng ý kiến của bạn, và tôn trọng việc bạn đọc đã đến, đọc và có những trao đổi.Nhưng những ý kiến của bạn nêu trong comment thì tôi không thể có ý kiến gì thêm, vì những gì cần nói tôi đã nói cả trong 2 entries vừa qua rồi.Nếu bạn vẫn cho rằng sử dụng ngôn ngữ theo nghĩa nào đó mới là chuẩn, nghĩa nào đó là không chuẩn, và giải thích như tôi là biện luận dài dòng và không cần thiết, thì có lẽ bạn đã không thực sự đọc entry này và đến đây chỉ để chứng minh điều bạn đã có sẵn trong đầu là đúng thôi.Nếu như vậy thì thực ra sẽ không có conversation nào hết. Vì vậy tôi đề nghị chúng ta chấm dứt mọi trao đổi ở đây nhé.

    A ghostwriter is a writer who authors books, manuscripts, screenplays, scripts, articles, blog posts, stories, reports, whitepapers, or other texts that are officially credited to another person. Celebrities, executives, participants in timely news stories, and political leaders often hire ghostwriters to draft or edit autobiographies, magazine articles, or other written material. A common form of literature ghostwriters are hired for is a celebrity's memoirs. In music, ghostwriters are often used for writing songs and lyrics. Screenplay authors can also use ghostwriters to either edit or rewrite their scripts to improve them.
