  🇨🇦 Canada Sets Quota for Chinese #EV Imports (Effective March 1, 2026) Global Affairs Canada released the official framework for importing #electricvehicles originating in China under a new quota system. What changed? ✅ Import permits are now mandatory. Every covered Chinese EV requires a shipment-specific permit before entry. ✅ Imports are capped. The first quota year (Mar 1, 2026 – Feb 28, 2027) allows 24,500 vehicles in the first six months, with additional allocation in the second half. ✅ The 100% surtax is gone, if you’re within quota. In-quota vehicles revert to the standard 6.1% MFN tariff, replacing the previous 100% surtax that effectively blocked imports. ✅ No permit = no entry. EVs covered under the program are now on Canada’s Import Control List under the Export and Import Permits Act.   🚨 Steel Surtax Relief Alert: Canada Grants Targeted Remission. A new remission order will allow certain importers to recover #steelderivative #surtaxes paid, or reduce future exposure. Here’s what supply chain and trade professionals need to know: 🔹 Who may benefit? • 🏥 Health care and public health organizations • 🚑 Emergency services and public safety agencies • 🛡️ Defence and national security entities • 🌬️ Certain energy projects (including qualifying wind towers) 🔹 What goods are covered? Key Exemptions: ✅ In-Transit Goods: Loaded before Feb. 24 & entered by Feb. 28 ⛴️ ✅ USMCA Products: Duty-free if qualifying 🇺🇸🇲🇽🇨🇦 ✅ Section 232 Goods: No stacking with existing duties ⛔ ✅ Reciprocal Tariff Carryovers: Certain ag, pharma, electronics, vehicles, aerospace, and informational products 🌾💊💻🚗✈️📚 ✅ CAFTA-DR Textiles & Apparel: Duty-free 👕🧵 🚨 IEEPA Tariffs: CBP will stop collecting at 12:00 a.m. ET on Feb. 24, 2026.   🚨  The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the President cannot use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (#IEEPA) to impose tariffs ⚖️. This decision invalidates reciprocal, fentanyl-related, and certain country-specific tariffs 🚫, and stops further collection. What importers need to know: ✅ IEEPA-based tariffs are no longer enforceable ❌, and previously collected duties may be eligible for refund 💰 (CBP operational guidance pending). ✅ Tariffs under other laws, like Section 232 or Section 301, remain in effect . ✅ Timing, refund procedures, and next steps are still pending ⏳ Tariffs impacted by the decision: ✅ Reciprocal tariffs applied to multiple trading partners ✅ Fentanyl-related tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico ✅ Country-specific tariffs, including measures applicable to Brazil GHY is closely monitoring updates 👀 and will provide guidance as new information becomes available.   Trade policy is moving fast. The paperwork behind it? Often still manual. 📄 A recent TechCrunch feature on Amari AI highlights something many in #supplychain already know: customs brokerage is the invisible infrastructure behind every imported product, and it’s under pressure. 🌎 Chris Bachinski, put it plainly: “It’s an old industry, and technology is going to shift our industry faster than I think most customs brokers understand.” With tariff changes and shifting trade rules constantly in the spotlight, #customsbrokers are no longer just processing entries. They are interpreting regulatory change in real time — often while goods are already in transit. ⚖️ And many importers don’t have in-house compliance teams. They rely on their broker to assess exposure, apply new rules correctly, and keep cargo moving. 🚛 Bachinski's notes: "And with trade now constantly in the spotlight, he said brokers need to be agile. “I make this joke that last year, the first time in history, our families know what we do for a living. Because all of a sudden, custom brokers became very, very important.” The message is clear: #CustomsBrokerage is now a strategic compliance function.
