LUNA: An algorithm for generating dynamic planet-moon transits

David Kipping

It has been previously shown that moons of extrasolar planets may be detectable with the Kepler Mission, for moon masses above ~0.2 Earth masses Kipping et al. 2009c. Transit timing effects have been formerly identified as a potent tool to this end, exploiting the dynamics of the system. In this work, we explore the simulation of transit light curves of a planet plus a single moon including not only the transit timing effects but also the light curve signal of the moon itself. We introduce our new algorithm, LUNA, which produces transit light curves for both bodies, analytically accounting for shadow overlaps, stellar limb darkening and planet-moon dynamical motion. By building the dynamics into the core of LUNA, the routine automatically accounts for transit timing/duration variations and ingress/egress asymmetries for not only the planet, but also the moon. We then generate some artificial data for two feasibly detectable hypothetical systems of interest: a i) prograde and ii) retrograde Earth-like moon around a habitable-zone Neptune for a M-dwarf system. We fit the hypothetical systems using LUNA and demonstrate the feasibility of detecting these cases with Kepler photometry.

Lukas Makky

The main issue of this paper is to present the communication in the broadercontext as natural activity and the process of intervention of the meaning through interaction between the creator and the recipient. In narrower sense, the work researches the possibilities and the competences of material objects, particularly prehistoric artifacts, entities within the frame of reference and the irabilities to integrate into the communication process. The article puts paradoxical approach of art theorists, aestheticians and semioticists looking for the “language” of arts in contradiction through the parallels and continuities to structure of verbal language, at the expense of disinterested research of expression means of selected arts.

Pernyataan Penyesalan oleh Korea Utara terhadap Korea Selatan terkait Kasus Ranjau Darat di DMZ (2015)

2017 •

Muhammad Ichsan Fadillah

This paper was submitted as a bachelor's thesis in 2017. It adopted the issue of inter-Korea agreement in 2015; which is significant because, inside the agreement, there was solidified North Korea's unprecedented statement of regret towards South Korea. That is why, the research question would be: "why did North Korea stated its regret to South Korea through the inter-Korean agreement 2015?" By doing so, 2 analytical tools will be used: theory of Structural Realism and theory of International Agreement. David Kipping

We present an analysis of 18 short-cadence (SC) transit lightcurves of TrES-2b using quarter 0 (Q0) and quarter 1 (Q1) from the Kepler Mission. The photometry is of unprecedented precision, 237ppm per minute, allowing for the most accurate determination of the transit parameters yet obtained for this system. Global fits of the transit photometry, radial velocities and known transit times are used to obtain a self-consistent set of refined parameters for this system, including updated stellar and planetary parameters. Special attention is paid to fitting for limb darkening and eccentricity. We place an upper limit on the occultation depth to be <72.9ppm to 3-sigma confidence, indicating TrES-2b has the lowest determined geometric albedo for an exoplanet, of Ag<0.146. We also produce a transit timing analysis using Kepler's short-cadence data and demonstrate exceptional timing precision at the level of a few seconds for each transit event. With 18 fully-sampled transits at such high precision, we are able to produce stringent constraints on the presence of perturbing planets, Trojans and extrasolar moons. We introduce the novel use of control data to identify phasing effects. We also exclude the previously proposed hypotheses of short-period TTV and additional transits but find the hypothesis of long-term inclination change is neither supported nor refuted by our analysis.
