Glock 19 Gen 5 MOS vs M&P 9 M2.0 4" COMPACT Jump to Latest QuickQuestionAnon Scenario:
  • Both have aftermarket triggers (Apex)

My question is... why would anyone choose the Glock 19 over the latter? - I would love to hear your opinions on the matter. 41 - 57 of 57 Posts 1 2 3

Cool, I notice it every single time.

NEED? maybe not. But whenever we talk about that M&P hinged trigger, I will always WANT a replacement trigger, because I hate the stock trigger. I will never personally feel comfortable with that stock trigger... these choices are all relative to the individual of course.

No, I am aware of how awful the 1.0 triggers are and I can admit to the great improvements brought on by the 2.0 triggers, but I do not like the hinged design. I don't like the aesthetics, I don't like how it feels. It makes the gun look cheap to me as well.

I have more than 10 different M&P's, all with stock triggers. I have used them in competition matches and have carried them for self defense. Not one time did all those "Cheap" hinged triggers fail me or prevent me from competing on a level with the big boys. And I don't sleep with the light on at night, either.....so to each his own. B

But is there an aesthetic issue, especially vis a vis Glock, with it's very visible tabbed safety trigger? I think the hinge is much less visible than the tab. But if you want no passive trigger safety, go with the SIG P320 (if you want to stay striker.) Then again, the P320 has had drop safety issues, and there are questions if they've ever really been resolved (because it doesn't have a passive trigger safety.)

I have after market triggers and stock triggers on our older 1.0's but after the fact I don't care enough to change a stock 2.0 trigger but might change a spring or two if my m&p had a thumb safety too . I could care less what trigger or trigger group upgrades the OP wants but then I would not ask others for there option between a gluck and a m&p . B

Over a year ago I was looking at a new mid-size 9mm polymer framed striker, not that I needed it, but that I wanted another. I had seen the Gen5 Glock 19 and the S&W 2.0 4-inch models separately, but not at the same time. Then at one shop both were in stock and the clerk put them on the counter together. I liked both but chose the M&P 2.0 for several reasons.
  • It simply feels better than the Glock 19 all the way from the grip angle to the general feel of the grip and gun overall. That it is better looking was not a choosing factor, but was noticed.
  • I like the trigger better. Unlike the OP, I much prefer the hinged trigger over the Glock trigger any day. Everyone with the safety thingy in the middle of the trigger, like the Glock, does that style trigger better than any of the numbers of Glocks I've owned over the years. The Glock thingy never retreats flush with the trigger and sticks out annoyingly when the trigger is pulled. My other similar handguns with this type trigger (PPQ,etc) the thingy does move flush with the trigger. Small annoyance but still there for no reason that I can see. I have read/heard others make similar comments.
  • The M&P has metal magazines. For handguns I've always preferred metal over the polymer coated Glock ones. Personal preference only, but as I was buying the gun for me then my own opinion was the only one which counted.
  • Finally the biggest reason to chose the M&P over the Gen5 Glock 19 is the significant, highly frustrating and expense I had getting my two earlier Gen4 Glock 19 to shoot without pumping my face full of hot empties. I had owned several 19s of various generations since shortly after that model came out. No trouble with any of them or the other various models of Glocks in four different calibers. The forums were full of the same problem, the Gen4 and some Gen3s simply were not "right" in ejection. The problem was sporadic but still affected numbers of that model. I finally read about the Apex Failure Resistant Extractor for Glock 19s and bought and installed one. Brass to Face immediately went entirely away in that one gun. I bought and installed a second Apex in my second G19 with the same happy result. But it cost me a lot of time, trouble, frustration and some money to fix what was obviously a Glock problem They never acknowledge the problem and simply told Gen4 G19 owners, like me that our guns had all the updated parts and they could do nothing. Sorry Charlie, but your problem. After the Apex Extractor fix I still have both G19s and they now run well thanks to my continued search for a fix and to Apex for putting out a quality product to replace the non-quality Glock part.
So I looked at the two guns on the counter and wondered IF this new generation G19 should have a BTF problem would I want to go through that whole thing again. Absolutely Not. And I knew what to expect from Glock if such a problem reared it's head. So I bought the M&P and it is a jewel, needing only about three minutes with sandpaper to get the rough grip texture to my liking. Other than knocking the tops off the rough texture the 2.0 is strictly stock. I have more than enough mid-size polymer strikers, but if I should ever buy another one it will be a M&P 2.0, possibly a 3.6 inch one next time. My opinion only. Each shooter should make up their own mind. Neither gun is a bad choice and neither is right for everyone. Having the opportunity for choices is great.

FYI, the first version of the Gen5 Glock 19 had the same extractor issues but they fixed it in the front serration version. The newer models no longer have that issue. H
