Global New Car Assessment Programme, or GNCAP for short, announced that it has come up with an updated set of protocols for the Safer Cars For India and Safer Cars For Africa crash test programmes. These new set of protocols will now also include evaluation and scoring of a car on the basis of inclusion of ESC - or Electronic Stability Control, side impact protection, and pedestrian protection.

Under the pedestrian protection tests, Global NCAP will assess the potential risks of injuries to a pedestrian's head, pelvis, upper and lower leg. These results also change by the materials used in the front bumper of the cars, depending on how forgiving it is to a pedestrian in the event of a collision. Cars which perform well can gain additional points if they have an autonomous emergency braking system which recognises pedestrians.

Furthermore, a car's passenger protection when it undergoes a side impact will now also be assessed by Global NCAP while rating the cars under these programmes. To ensure robustness in engineering solutions, Global NCAP will decide if testing will be conducted at the passenger or driver side of the vehicle using the same biomechanical and modifiers criteria.
