[report] [news]Friday 31st October 2008quotequote all Those of you who know......is it worth the extra dosh for the R32 over it's little brother and what sort of MPG would I get out of them in real life?

[report] [news]Friday 31st October 2008quotequote all On experience with the previous generation of the same (I had 2x 1.8T New Beetles and one 3.2V6 New Beetle RSi, which was the test mule for the R32), I'd say the GTi would be a much better car, particularly with a chip tune. The 3.2V6 is a heavy engine, weighing the cars down on the nose, and the addition of the 4WD system makes the car slower too. I'd choose the 2WD turbo version every day of the week, unless you were gonna start getting serious with blower modifications to the R32 lump...

[report] [news]Friday 31st October 2008quotequote all I'm a big fan of VW V6s having had 2 x VR6s and 2 x 4motions over 9 years. However, I'd take the current GTi over the R32 now. R32 is just too heavy. Extra money can be used for a DSG box.

[report] [news]Friday 31st October 2008quotequote all As has been said, if its the MK5, a chipped GTI is truly awesome. Weight was always a problem with the V6 golfs. I had a VR6 and a MK4 R32 for a bit, lovely cars but they never quite have that spritely edge that they should! winkNot driven the MK5, but heard its the best V6 so far.

[report] [news]Friday 31st October 2008quotequote all Might be slightly biased here but the R32 is a beast of a car! The GTi is quick car, and with a chip marginally faster than it's big brother, the ED30 even more so. The weight differential is somewhere in the region of 50kg IIRC so it isn't massive. Two factors make up that weight difference though - the haldex 4wd system which provides unbelievable grip and the sound of a V6 at full chat when you give it some beans! I average about 26mpg on my daily commute but can drop in to the teens or creep in to the 30s depending on how you drive. If you want some more advice head over to www.r32oc.com, there are a few guys who have gone from GTi to R32 and vice versa.HTH

[report] [news]Friday 31st October 2008quotequote all Personally would get the edition 30 golf gti dsg then have it superchipped to 300bhp as can get a lot more power out of it than standard gti as used a detuned audi s3 engine instead so stronger internals etc... Then you have the best of both worlds however would advice going for the bluefin option so you can reduce power on rainy days as 300bhp to the front wheels may become slightly erm... interesting.

[report] [news]Friday 31st October 2008quotequote all This has been discussed here many times. The general consensus of opinion is to try both GTi and R32 and see which one suits YOU better. Its not as simple as saying that one is better than the other.Ive owned many GTi's(Im a car dealer and they are a popular model I sell)-they are a great car but we run an R32 as our 'family car',weve had it from new,and its a car that I love, and my partner would not swap it for any other car.

I love them, but have only seen one. A great concept.

[report] [news]Saturday 1st November 2008quotequote all Hi all,Having plaid with an early R32 golf in my chipped Golf 170 BHP GT Diesel from about 80MPH to top end i think they are over rated! I know driver makes a lot of a diferance but he could not pull away at all! I am not saying that my car is the fastest thing in the world as its not but i was totally shocked!Dal

Horribly over-rated once the wow factor has worn off imo

[report] [news]Saturday 1st November 2008quotequote all On your twisty B roads, in my experience the GTI is just as quick as the R32. The R32 would be my choice just for the noise alone though cloud9

[report] [news]Wednesday 5th November 2008quotequote all I'll be honest, I can't read some of these posts. As wise heads have said, its down to which suits you best, both are very good cars so I can't think you'll go far wrong. The GTI is so good though, even in standard (IE non Edition 30) spec, that I'd be amazed if the R32 could improve on that. Beyond the dynamic differences, I'd say the next factor is looks, personally I prefer the GTI's front but the R32's back, but as I said they are both pretty fine looking cars.I'm sure this thread has been done to death over the years if you do a search, there are plenty of owners on here who've posted about their experiences.

[report] [news]Wednesday 5th November 2008quotequote all I love my R32. It ain't all about raw power for me, but the super smooth delivery & great soundtrack.I have also found the 4wd useful on odd occasion. As always the answer is try both & decide for yourself! (22-25 mpg for R32 btw)
