Die Markeneinführung des VW Golf I im Jahr 1974 war mit verantwortlich dafür die Absatzkrise von Volkswagen zu beenden. Der Volkswagen Golf bildete die neue Kompaktklasse und galt als Nachfolger vom Käfer. Im Zeitraum von 1974-1983 wurden ca. 6 Millionen geschlossene Golf I gebaut. In Südafrika ging die Fertigung des Golf I als CITI Golf noch bis 2009 weiter. Das Golf I Cabrio, der Jetta I und auch der Caddy bauen auf die Technik und teilweise auch von der Karosserie auf den Golf I auf. Die Golf I Limousine kann rein optisch in 2 Modelle unterteilt werden.Die ersten Versionen hatten kleine Rückleuchten, Stoßstangen aus Metall die zum Teil verchromt waren. Ein Armaturenbrett mit runden Tacho und auch sonst erinnertes vieles an den Käfer. Im Jahr 1979 bzw. 1980 änderte sich einiges: die Rückleuchten wurden breiter die Chromstoßstangen wichen gegen Plastik-Stoßstangen. Der Innenraum wurde moderner.

Das Golf I Cabrio, gebaut von 1979-1993 ist ein sehr populäres Fahrzeug was noch Heute zum Straßenbild gehört. Auch hier kann man 2 Versionen optisch sehr gut unterscheiden.Die erste Serie von 1979-1987 gleicht sehr dem Golf I. Die Modelle ab 1987 sollten dem Golf II angeglichen werden. Aus diesem Grund gab es eine geänderte Stoßstange sowie Radlaufverbreiterungen und Seitenschweller. Hinzu kam noch ein modernerer Kühlergrill mit Doppelscheinwerfer. Auch technisch zogen viele Teile aus dem Golf II ein.

Der Golf GTI das Topmodel des Golf, vorgestellt 1976, sorgte für viel Fahrspaß mit seinen erst 110 dann später 112 PS.Heute gehört der GTI und die Sondermodelle wie z.B. der Pirelli GTI zu den Youngtimer in der Szene.
