Google Cloud's EMEA Arm Loses Third Top-Ranking Exec In 6 Months

Google's EMEA Cloud division is undergoing an exodus of top talent, after a third high-ranking manager left the tech giant in six months.

Sanj Bhayro, who previously served as Google Cloud's VP of operations in the EMEA regions, is the latest senior leader to quit the division this year, the company confirmed to Insider.

His departure comes after regional president Chris Ciauri left the company to "pursue external opportunities" in March, and former UK and Ireland director Pip White was poached by Slack in June.

All three had previously worked together at Salesforce. Ciauri was the first to jump ship there as VP of EMEA in September 2019, taking on an equivalent role at Google.

Over the following year, Ciauri recruited former Salesforce teammates Bhayro and White to join him at Google, but neither lasted more than 18 months in their respective roles.

While Google's cloud business is growing, it lags behind the competition globally. Google Cloud holds 6.1% of cloud market share, while Amazon AWS holds 40.8% and Microsoft holds 19.7%, according to Gartner.

Google doesn't break out the performance of the business by geography, and in the three months to June 30 reported $4.6 billion in revenue, up from $3 billion the prior year. In 2020, the division reported a full-year loss of $5.6 billion and revenue above $13 billion.

According to a report from CNBC, Google Cloud has become increasingly desperate to remain competitive, slashing charges on transactions made via its online marketplace down from 20% to just 3%.
