  While you walk, look at the H&M coming up on your left.

  It used to be an important department store called Grandella. And nearby you could find the famous Armazéns do Chiado, nowadays a normal shopping centre. They were both rivals at the beginning of the 20th century. Even then, downtown and Chiado were both centres for commerce.

  People would come here to buy the best quality fabrics, shoes, and jewelry... They are part of many locals' memories, especially the elderly who remember Chiado and Baixa during their youth, with some nostalgia.

  In the 80s it came into crisis, with the coming of the new shopping centres, and the change of fashion trends. In 1988, all this area was destroyed by a fire and rebuilt, regaining its beautiful architecture, thanks to the work of the acclaimed Portuguese architect, Siza Vieira.
