🎧 5 years Gretsch G5422TG vs G5422TDCG ...?? What's the difference? Been pricing this hollowbody and was about to pull the trigger and low and behold there's two identical looking models (same exact product description far as I can tell too) with different model numbers being TG and DCG at the end of the G5422? What's the difference between the G5422 TG and the DCG? I can't find a single thing on the webs bout this. Man I swear Gretsch guitars have the most convoluted models I've ever heard of. A series of numbers followed by letters like it were a firearm or a vacuum or something. Why not just give them names like everyone else? I digress. Any help on this is much appreciated - Thanks in advance!

Any help on this is much appreciated - Thanks in advance! "DC" usually designates double cutaway as opposed to the same model with single cutaway. It would appear that somebody at Gretsch screwed up on the model numbers this year and assigned two different numbers to the same guitar. "T" usually dersignates a thinline body instead of a fat full body. "G" would be "Guitar". These are the traditional designations, but since the original Gretsch company is essentially gone now they may not have anybody around who understands the numbering system. It goes back to when you could order a basic model (type of wood and trim) in full body, thinline, single cut or double cut. Gibson had a similar system for their ES series jazz boxes with some differences. "ES" stood for "Electric Spanish". They didn't generally offer a double cut version on most hollowbodies at first but did sometimes offer a Florentine cutaway option ("F") that was pointed instead of rounded (Venetian, or "V".). They did, however, offer a no cutaway version on their original hollowbody line. So you could order an ES175, ES175T, ES175C, and ES175 TC, at least in theory. After they introduced the ES3XX series in the late '50s they cut back on the thin versions of the jazz boxes. After the '50s most of the variations were dropped and by the time Norlin took over they made very few of the original variations, generally only the most popular ones. Hi John, thanks for some light on this quandary. I can’t inagine however they have no idea what’s going on over there.... there must be an explanation. Does anyone know? Thanks again Share Reply Quote 27th November 2018 #4 JML Studios 🎙️ Lives for gear Joined: Feb 2015 Posts: 1,211 My Recordings/Credits My Studio 15 Reviews written 🎧 5 years Oh my goodness I just thought of something! To absolutely ensure the axe won’t squelch on stage on me, can’t I just grab a calling gun and fill the damn thing with insulation foam? As long as I protect the wiring and pickups from contact (maybe wrap them in plastic cellophane first or something) that should work right? I don’t care at all about resale I’ll be keeping the guitar so a permanent fix appeals to me - thoughts? If you've ever replaced the pickups on a hollow body and pulled out the wiring you'd know it's a futile endeavor to protect the wiring and pickups from something like a form filling expanding foam. Find the guitar you want and look for someone who can plug the F holes. I've seen heavy duty touring PA cabinets destroyed by expanding foam. Very highly NOT recommended. Plus, it would make any service work on the guitar's electronics impossible. DC is double cutaway, which is completely redundant, but Gretsch have always been mental with these things. They often will add the colour in the model name too! I have one in Cadaillac Green - great guitar! Mine was simply called G5422TG. I have one in Cadaillac Green - great guitar! Mine was simply called G5422TG. Gretsch model numbers: Decoding the code: The Gretsch Pages Wrong. The Bigsby is and always has been marketed as a VIBRATO tailpiece. It was introduced long before Leo Fender, in his musical ignorance, confused generations of guitar players about what is tremolo (a VOLUME based modulation) and what is vibrato (a PITCH based modulation.) Gretsch has been supplying Bigsbys as an option forever, some years before Fender introduced the Stratocaster and confused the world. Incidentally, Leo introduced his "Vibrato" amps to compete with Magnatones true vibrato effect but couldn't duplicate the Magnatone effect because (A) it was a complex circuit using hand matched varistors and (B) it was patented - so he used a much simpler and cheaper tremolo circuit and called it "Vibrato" because he couldn't hear to difference - Leo was notoriously tone deaf. But anyway, Gretsch never did and never has referred to vibrato as "tremolo". Now Gretsch is owned by FMIC so any modern documentation is suspect - it was probably written by a Fender PR flak. That’s the only (but massive) difference. Same binding, same electronics, pickups, neck, tuners, bridge, bigsby, etc. Unfortunately, the 5422tg came with two 1.5” stress cracks behind the neck on both sides but it looks like it’s only in the clear coat. I can fix that and he refunded some cash back. Plays like a dream and had the tv Jones/mojotone upgrades already in it (and a nice mono bog, wow what a difference between a cheap bodyglove gig bag and a mono!!! Wowzers).
