I just realized that someone upgrading for a GTX 660 was looking at a 1050 Ti, and they have virtually the same performance in games, even though the 660 is quite a few years older and just one step up. Is there something that I am missing?

well, optimalisation for newer gpu's is a thing. and the 660 ti performs about the same as a 1050 ti in benchmarks, but not in real life workloads

No the 1050 Ti is faster than the GTX 660. The 1050 Ti resembles more the likes of the GTX 960.
For example, this is a benchmark showing the GTX 660 vs the standard 1050. Not even the 1050 ti

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-660-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1050-Ti/2162vs3649 I mean one is newer and still has driver support. They might be similar, but the 1050ti is probably better overall, because it requires less power most of the time and definitely has more ram.

I would do the upgrade, the 1050ti is a great card and with the better driver support will actually probably be better optimized for modern games.

Would you ever buy a 970? They are cheap and are equivalent to a 1060. I had one until I upgraded to an SLI 970 setup. I just got my 2080, but the 970 is a good card.

Before I ever had a proper gaming graphics card, yes. I started out with an RX 470 as my first gaming card though which is equal to the GTX 970, which means I won't be buying one as my main card.

A 970 is between a 1050 Ti and 1060 3GB. The 980 is a closer equivalent.

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-970-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-3GB/2577vs3646 its only about 4% slower than the 1060 3gb and for the amount of used hardware, id hazard a better value. Plus you can SLI the 970, so it would be cheaper down the road to almost double your performance in compute and some games.

That site isn't even remotely accurate. And SLI is around a 50% increase, not double.

It depends on scaling, it can be close to double within synthetics and certain games.
