Gugu and his mask reminded me a lot of Auggie and his astronaut helmet from Wonder. Gugu is disfigured but we never get to see his face. And then you realize that's not even what matters.Very interested to see more interactions between Fushi and his creator and the mystery surrounding them.

Profile Image for James DeSantis.James DeSantisAuthor 17 books1,182 followersDecember 14, 2020I read these infrequently but somehow in a second I remember everything that happened in the prior volume. That to me showcases these stories sticking with you and being meaningful. Now that our Shape-shifting immortal has moved on and taken the shape of both the great demon bear and the little girl who had died, he ends up in a small community with a boy who had his face smashed by a log. Barely alive he is rescued by a old man and now wears a mask to cover his face at all times since he considers himself a monster. Between Gugu (The monster) and Fushi (The immortal) they both help each other grow into humans that they are meant to be. This is a multi-layer story of acceptances, loss, and finding your place. It's also kind of a love story but with realistic outcomes that don't feel forced or pushed upon for the plot. The fight here is actually pretty great too with a feeling of "oh shit they might die" that I kind of love the series doing so far. I also enjoyed the interactions with the characters and even with the lines feeling repetitive at times connecting to the themes they do a pretty great job overall showcasing it. A real high 4.5 out of 5. Profile Image for D.D14 reviewsOctober 18, 2019At least no one died in this volume

It probably didn't help that I didn't much care about Gugu or the other characters involved. I liked that the story jumped forward a few years, though, that we get a more volved Fushi in the future volumes, for despite this volume not doing it for me, I'm gonna give it a few more chances. It's been good until now, after all.

Profile Image for Tyra Leann.Tyra Leann262 reviews18 followersJune 1, 2021Honestly, where volume two lagged a bit, volume three really came out with more interesting narrative aspects. The story is really taking off now Profile Image for Mangrii.

Profile Image for Doc.Doc1,927 reviews31 followersJuly 3, 2018This is not a story just about Fushi as I am sure those that have read up to this point might relize. The story starts out with a young boy named Gugu who with his brother make ends meet but his fate is not a cheerful one as he is betrayed and the girl he cares for is almost killed by a runaway log that ends up crushing poor Gugu's face. His life was saved by an eccentric old man and now hidden within a chameleon type mask Gugu gets to meet Fushi as Pyrona brings him to meet the man that saved Gugu's life. Now the wheels of fate turn once more as Fushi has time to learn not only from Pyrona but now Gugu as well as they both mature and learn together.Of course there is something that wants Fushi's powers for itself and Fushi's creator tries warning him that staying will only bring misfortune because his enemy will learn from its mistakes next time so the next volume will probably deal with some harsh subjects as Fushi refuses to move on and learn more from other places. My fave part would have to be Gugu needs booze to save Fushi from his enemy and interrupts the parents of the girl he cares for from taking her away. Of course the booze inside him has made him far from Sober so he ends up confessing his affections for her before running off to try to save Fushi. :)

Profile Image for Danielle Booey.Danielle Booey1,145 reviews13 followersJune 1, 2019I feel like with this volume I'm finally starting to understand what is happening to Fushi. While not as good as the first two volumes it is also not quite as much of an emotional downer. Fushi is given a chance to learn and grow in this volume, perhaps in different ways then his strange observer hopes, but it is still growth. The supporting characters in this volume include: Pirona (the old lady from volume 2), Booze Man, Gugu, and Rean. Plus Meer the cute dog. It will be interesting to know if Fushi is still with them in volume 4 since the end includes quite the time jump.

Profile Image for Danielle.Danielle485 reviews14 followersFebruary 10, 2020This series continues to get better with each volume! Fushi’s continuing journey of self discovery and purpose is filled with interesting characters, surprising twists and a slowly revealing world that may be more than what it seems. There are many layers to the story and a deeper meaning than you usually encounter in manga. It keeps me turning pages and really excited to see where it goes next.Profile Image for Kristin.Kristin573 reviews25 followersMarch 22, 2018Even though you may be feel like you'll never love another set of characters like the one Fushi just left behind, Oima always proves you wrong.Profile Image for Aimé.Aimé174 reviews36 followersMay 12, 2021Todo va demasiado bien.Tengo miedo.Profile Image for xsebastianx.xsebastianx84 reviews5 followersMarch 3, 20244.5

Profile Image for Aitor. Profile Image for Riya Bhatia.Riya Bhatia693 reviews16 followersJune 8, 2021Pioran brings our shape-shifting immortal to this little town to her old friend who is a booze maker. The booze man lives with Gugu, a kid he saved after his face got smashed and he was barely alive and now he wears a mask to cover his disfigured face. He considers himself a monster. We watch fushi grow into their own person in this volume. The volume also talks a lot about loss, acceptance and finding your place in this world. We are introduced to this character named rean and her dog who is the one Gugu saved and got injured in the process. She does not know Gugu saved her or that she was in danger at all. Rean lives the poshe life where she is very controlled so she keeps running away from home. This volume focused on Fushi and Gugu's brotherly bond quite a bit and how they help each other grow as individuals. Also, a very confusing fight at the end? Profile Image for Victoria Zita. Profile Image for Sada.Sada5 reviewsMarch 23, 2021It's so interesting to see how Fushi is growing as a person and heartwarming how he treasures the people he meets.
