Joined Dec 11, 2013 Messages 333 Location New Jersey (South) and Northeast Pennsylvania Real Name Holly OK - Need advice on an upgrade since I'm getting back into it. Needs: - Travel photos - tripod birding History: My first Panasonic was the G6 in 2013. My cam crapped out on me on an NYC visit so I impulsed bought the G6 from B&H while I was there. Almost immediately, I wished that I had purchased the GX7 but I stuck with my G6. These are my thoughts on why I like the GX8 over the GX9. I would like advice on whether I am making the right assumptions based upon my needs/uses.
  • I am a casual shooter using jpg and raw but I want to get away from raw and use SOC because I find post processing a huge drag.
  • I know there are other brands out there but I am already used to the Panansonic menus/etc. I'd rather not have to re learn an entire system (Oly?)
  • I'd like a cam that I can use with my existing glass and perhaps get some more mileage out of what I already have.
  • I'm not into video but that could change - I'd like to keep my options open.
Thinking: -I am considering getting the GX8 because I loved the GX7 and had buyers remorse)
  • GX8 is weather sealed
  • GX8 has in body stabilization (v none in either o my existing bodies)
  • GX8 has awesome viewfinder
  • GX8 has the screen that flips out that I use for focusing (like my G6)
-I am not considering the GX9 because
  • GX9 is not weather sealed
  • GX9 is smaller but I already have a tinycam I love
  • GX9 does not have the flippy screen that I use hard in my G6)
Should I be considering something else? Bodies currently in my collection: GM1 (Love love love, especially in orange! Portable, solid) G6 (Plasticy but it worked well overall a hum ho boring feeling) Glass: Summary of what I have and what I use Glass I use: Panasonic 20MM G II f/1.7 (everyday lens when I don't know what I'm shooting however if there is a chance of a portrait-I'd also bring the 12-32 as I like portraits a bit better however this is a fantastic lens otherwise) Panasonic 12-32 (silver-came with the GM1 - use almost exclusively on both cams) Panasonic 100-300 (bought it used, fantastic for my uses- I use for birds and I am not trying to get published or anything) Glass I collected: Sigma 60mm f/2.8 DN Art Lens (Used occasionally for portraits outside) Rokinon 7.5mm Fisheye (fun toy-rarely used) Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens (used) -used rarely for macro photography and selling stuff/closeups- but I like it Panasonic 14-42 II (came with the G6- dont use it much-bulky and ugly) Panasonic 45-150 (came with the G6- dont use it much-bulky and ugly) Dinobe

On first glance, I don’t think they are...so any benefit of a weather-sealed body would be lost. Saying that, I’d favour the GX8 to the GX9...I thought long and hard about getting one before going with the Pen-F. To me, the GX8 feels better to handle than the GX9 and the EVF was lovely (from memory). That’s only my opinion though...it’s yours that matters. agentlossing

I also have my old GX-1, which has the form factor (like the GX-9) that got me into m4/3 in the first place. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but to be honest, I agree with the other posters that the GX-9 would be a great camera for your stated needs. It will be less comfortable to hold with long lenses than the GX-8, whose ergonomics are about perfect in my opinion. If I had unlimited funds, I would probably upgrade my GX-8 to a G9 and my GX-1 to a GX-9. Levster

I've just scored a 40-150/2.8 with TC on eBay so I'll get to test it with a longer lense soon! I'll need to buy a grip soon! Dinobe

I really don't understand the problem with Olympus' menus. Switch on the super control panel and you hardly need the menu any more. The super control panel is very similar to my Canon 7d menu. A couple of observations with Olympus menus which could cause all the negativity: - the list of options is vast - some icons are a bit too abstract - you can customize a lot with the risk of getting lost Mattyh

Saying that, I’m seriously tempted to upgrade to the 9, at first I was put off by its small viewfinder and none flip out screen (I know, another argument) and it’s significantly small dimensions which effect its handling with my large hands, But I’ve had another play with one fitted with the grip and it made a significant difference to me, still don’t like the tilting screen and the viewfinder is terrible if you’ve ever looked through a GX8 viewfinder but not bad if you haven’t, Reading that back I don’t think I’ve helped much, Sorry MiguelATF

The EVF is huge and a wonderful tool for composing, viewing, framing - and all the many things that somehow seem to make photography special for me. As opposed to the GX9 which, though a truly fine camera in so many ways, has (from what I understand) the same EVF (viewfinder) as the previous generations of Lumix rangefinder-style cameras before it (the GX85 and the GX7) - which comes in a native 16:9 format --- which is useful for videographers --- but terrible for stills shooters as it only allows the user to see a smaller portion of the EVF for your micro-four-thirds framing. I know, I know, selecting a camera based on EVF performance is not at the top of everyone's list - but being both a glasses-wearer and an obsessive framer, finding a camera with a truly fantastic viewfinder-EVF --- the GX8 --- has turned me into a serious GX8 fan. And, of course, most of the previous posters have made excellent points about certain technical reasons why the GX9, with its newer engine and better JPEG's and other improvements, is and would be an improvement over the GX8. But the GX8 is still a superb photographic tool and camera for many people. Just my admittedly biased .02 cents. Good luck with your choice. They are both fine cameras, obviously. Mike Wingate

Why does the increase from 16 to 20mgpxl screen not make much difference? A few more filter for jpeg shooters and video. The tilting viewfinder that I find unusual, I realise that is a throwback in usage and style to the GX8. I was not convinced to upgrade, but would buy it is starting from scratch. I also handled and played with the GX80, GX9, G80 and G9 yesterday. All with the PL12-60 mm lens. I do like the handling and features of the G9, big though it is. The G80 seems in no mans land. Not a cheap camera with only 16mgpxls and other features. The same price, body only as the GX9. Bif

This is a HUGE plus for me. The EVF on the GH3 was too small and hard to use for some. The EVF in the GH4 was a great improvement, larger, bright, and clear! The one in the G85 and GH5 followed suit and the one in the GX8 is supposed to be close. The one in the GX85 is some better than the GX7 but not on a par with the GX8, GH4, G85, and GH5, but I'm flexible enough to use it.

You might consider keeping the GM1 but listing the G6 for sale here. It was a good body in it's time but it may be best to sell it while it will it will still bring something.

Actually the 14-42 II is one of the better "kit" zooms around today. It's predecessors were bulkier and not quite as good sharpness wise as the version II. Having a range from what I consider "workhorse" wide angle to portrait perspective tele, this might be one of the more useful travel lenses around. Especially on bodies like the GX7, GX85, and GX8/GX9.

This one also may bear some re-evaluation. Granted it has only half the reach of your 100-300 but it's a lot more compact and lightweight. By using the Panasonic Lumix bodies' built in tele convert function you could actually emulate the reach of that longer heavier lens. My advice is to go with the brighter bigger EVF in either case. Another option you might consider is the G85 body. Big Bright EVF, weather sealing, good grip, fairly lightweight, great JPEGs, and the "kit" option with the 12-60mm f3.5-f5.6 weather sealed lens adds only $100 to the price ($797.99 total at B&H) and the 1 year warranty can be extended to 3 years. I have one I ordered when it first came out and I find that 12-60 to be quite sharp at both wide and tele ends. I got it to "hold me" until the GH5 came out. Good luck L

For the 100-300 the extra grip would be hand-y :shakehead: Also it's been disparaged here but the sleep mode could prove handy on a long hike when spare batteries are unavailable.. kingduct

Joined Oct 12, 2013 Messages 493 Looking at your criteria, I think the G85 would be better than the GX8 -- it'd have all of the good stuff about the GX8, without the drawbacks. Yeah, the sensor isn't quite as good, but I think the jpeg improvements, better IBIS, and other changes all mean that actual image quality should match the GX8. And I do think Panasonic has decent discounts on the G85 sometimes. Myself, I've got the GX85, which I am perfectly happy with. It replaced my G5, which I grew to like a lot, but never loved. I feel no need to move to the GX9 (or anything more expensive) because I've reached the point where my limitations as a photographer mean I cannot get better pictures from a better camera. Now, if the money's burning a hole in your pocket and you really want to trade in that G6, through 9/8, there's a sale on the G9 where you can get $400 off just for trading in your old camera. Might be worth a check: Panasonic G9 for $1097.99 - Focus Camera: Trade In Camera/Lens value + $400 off
