H-13 Tool Steel is a 5% chromium hot work tool steel designed for applications that require extreme toughness combined with good red-hardness. It should be noted that, although H13 was designed as a hot work steel, it has solved many cold work applications where extra toughness could be gained with some sacrifice of wear resistance. About H-13 Tool Steel H-13 is a tool steel alloy that contains chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium. The molybdenum and vanadium provide the strength in this grade while the chromium aids in softening the material when it's being used in high temperatures. H-13 is able to withstand rapid cooling and even premature heat checking. Characteristics include good machining and welding capabilities as well as good ductility. Other Shock Resisting Tool Steel from Alro When considering steel for a shock resisting or shock absorbing application, grades S-5 and S-7, stocked by Alro Steel may also be considered. Alro is also a distributor for Viscount 44® type H-13. Properties H-13 is typically bought to meet chemistry requirements rather than physical requirements. For that reason, physical properties are generally not provided unless requested prior to production. Any material can be sent to a third party after production to be tested for physical properties.
