flintlock hunter Does anyone use H 380 with 100 gr bullets in their .243? I use 38.5 grs H 380 with an 80gr SP and Rem 9 1/2 primer for about 5/8th" @ 100yds, with no fouling round necesary, but the only data I have found for a 100 gr Nosler Partition using H380 is 36.0grs max in an older Hogdon manual. Thanks in advancde for any help. #1 · Mar 11, 2020 Does anyone use H 380 with 100 gr bullets in their .243? I don’t remember the charge weight but I do know it was 100 grain Speer.. I also found that a magnum primer Vs regular primer was an improvement. Gun was a ruger m77 varmint with heavy barrel. Since then I have gone to IMR 4831 and the Sierra 85 grain bullet, it’s pretty much a 5 shot 1 hole group at 100 yards. I also shoot the 85 out of one of my black guns that shoots pretty impressive groups. ( 6x45 ) #3 · Mar 11, 2020 ..are you wanting to go OVER "max "?...because it "only" 36 gr #6 · Mar 12, 2020 What loading manual you look at can make a difference in the "max" load charge wt. I normally stay within the parameters the published data gives, comparing the data with more than one manual before loading for that reason. Although the manuals show the H 380 burning rate slower than the IMR powders I also use, bullet wts over 80grs don't list H 380. So no, I'm not wanting to go over max, just looking for some guidelines on what the minimum/maximum safe charge wts are. My rifle does very well with H 380, so I'm going to try it once I have reliable data. Should the max be only 34 grains, so be it, but the only thing I found was the 36 gr for a 100 gr bullet. Thank you for your input. The Hodgon website listed it, and Lyman reloading manuals listsome loads with it too. So far I've found H380 pretty good with 80gr and lighter bullets, and IMR 4064 and IMR 4895 the better powders for heavier bullets, ay least in my Model 70. 0 Reply #13 · Mar 17, 2020 the 243 i used 4350 loads i no longer have. i bought a varmit 700 in 243 and started using 3031 in it and it shoot really well. if i do my part it will punch a one hole group at 100 yards. #14 · Mar 18, 2020 Well, I'm sort of on hold with my ranges at the moment, my club asked for a voluntary restriction on using them. It's supposed to be till the end of the month, but I guess this COVID19 thing will be the deciding factor. I don't have any 3031 on hand, but I am considering your suggestion about it, just at my age and "exsisting health problems" it might be a while before I visit a shop to get some. Thanks for the input. #15 · Mar 21, 2020 In a older circa 1983 Hornady book that powder isn't even listed for a 243.However it is listed for 6mm. #16 · Mar 22, 2020 Seems like anything else some manuals list powders that others don't. I don't think Speer listed it either, but my Lyman manual does, as well as the old Hodgdon guide they used to hand out at the gun stores. Their website lists it too. I see some guys swear by IMR 4350 as well, but some manuals warn against it. My rifle doesn't like IMR 4350, but a couple of other IMR powders are great in it. This was my reasoning behind inquiring if any other HPA guys had experience with the Hodgdon 380. Thanks for your input:smile2: 0 Reply #17 · Oct 12, 2020 Long time since I started this thread, but I'm thinking the load I settled on may just be of some use to someone else with a tempermental .243. Sierra 100 gr Spitzer IMR 4831- 41.0 grs 100 yard groups averaged 1/2", with 3/8" the smallest, and 5/8" the largest. CCI 200 #18 · Oct 12, 2020 ..I pretty much exclusively shoot .243 H4350 and H4895 are my powders...all shoot around 2900-3100 fps #19 · Oct 12, 2020 In any loading manual of 20 years old or less potential liability is a huge factor. In reality I find usually starting maybe a grain under the listed max and working up often ends up being over max for best accuracy. Common sense is involved. If you do not know what to look for that indicates pressures that may be or approaching unsafe loads, stop at book max. This will be more than adequate to kill whatever you are hunting. A modern rifle in good shape with good quality brass may let you go a bit beyond listed max, BUT IF YOU DON'T KNOW DON'T PUSH IT UNLESS YOU GET EDUCATED. A group slightly smaller than the last one will not make a difference in 99.9 percent of all situations. #20 · Oct 12, 2020 I always load 4350 for my 788 Rem. .243, works great? #21 · Oct 21, 2020 NO NO NO TO ALL BALL POWDERS FOR COLD WEATHER HUNTING....anything but is my 65 year old rule !! #22 · Oct 21, 2020 No problems with ball powders, but for the record, the load posted is a groundhog load. My deer load is IMR 4831, for no other reason than it's the powder that is most accurate with a 100 gr bullet in my rifle. 0 Reply Insert Quotes Post Reply
