#1 · Feb 2, 2008 H&K 416 or G36 Wich rifle would be considert the best of the two? And why? Anybody have an opinion about that? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Feb 2, 2008 im going to bed now, but when I wake up, I expect this to be about 20 pages long and hurt feelings in all directions...lol #3 · Feb 2, 2008 LMAO!!! I prefer the G36. I know the 416 has the same gas piston system as the G36, but to me the 416 is a glorified AR clone. I've always been drawn to the HK's because they are unique, in both operation and look. The the best of my knowledge, there is no G36 clone. When you see a G36, you KNOW what it is. Some will argue against the poly receiver and parts, especially those who like to burn through Beta mags on F/A, but I think for most of us, we'd never push one to that point, IMO. I can see the draw for LE with its integrated rail system... very adaptable for many applications and in that regard, I give it a +1. But for me, I'm not LE so the practicality of adding lasers, flashlights, vertical grips, etc is goose-egg. Not too long ago I added a quad-rail, flashlight, laser and reflex optics to my Colt LE M4--essentially made an entry weapon out of it. Shortly afterwards I thought to myself "WTF?". While it was awesome to look at and dropped the jaws of all my friends, it wasn't practical nor necessary. The 416 may grown on me one of these days, but everytime I look at one I have yet to get that "WOW, I gotta have one" feeling. 0 Reply #4 · Feb 2, 2008 I have both. I guess I'll have to call them clones, because I'm forced to modify the original weapon to make them appear as they were intended. The 416 is rock solid and adaptable as Chopstix said. The 36 is very versatile with tons of interchangeable parts to vary it's configuration. Although I haven't had problems with either, I am very concerned with the plastic internals of the 36 lower. At least with the Colt lower on my 416 I can use all steel parts with assurance that there are lots of spares to draw upon in the future. Try that with a 36. Even today, their spare parts inventory around the nation is almost non-existent. Just my 2 cents. #5 · Feb 2, 2008 I believe G3Kurz posted a while back that he watched a test in which nine 100rd Beta mags were run through a G36 on full auto in under 5 minutes. There were no parts breakages of any kind and if I remember correctly, he said that even though the handguard eventually melted, the gun never missed a beat. Despite what some people think, the G36 is actually a very robust weapon. Having said that, my preference goes to the 416. You simply can't beat the ergonomics of the AR in my opinion. Tspeis #6 · Feb 2, 2008 (Edited) My self tilt a litle twords the H&K416 I always been a fan of the M16/M4 (Stoner design) And i have the Canadian Diemaco C8 now (witch is a M4A1) So im werry used to this system (Been using it since 1996 where it replacede a H&K G3) The gassystem of the H&K416 seems to be a major improvement over the original Stoner design in the M4, ant a choice for the future and a replacement for my now old C8. It is also temting to at the same time get a H&K417 so i have two alomst identicaly weapons, but one with the range and power of the good old 7,62X51 (that i sometime miss a litle since i gave up my trusty old G3 that had been with me since 1982) don't actualy know how many parts are interchangeble betwen these two?? But these things vote a litle in favour for the 416 compared to the 36. Im actualy also a bit skeptical twords all the plastic i must admit. But plastic or not, i want the BEST rifle! and if that is the 416 that's where ill' go. Specialy since its my own money that i have to spend if i want something other than juat a new C8. Another thing that now comes to my mind is that everybody that i know and work with have C7 or C8's and use these magazines, the army suply of mag. is also ONLY Thermold M16 magazines. Så special mag's of the G36 can give me suply problems unless i buy a **** load of them. NOT GOOD! Also how many parts are interchangeble betwen a Colt/Diemaco rifle and the 416? So i might just be forced by practical reasons to get a 416. But im still curious about the quality and reliabelity differences betwen the two weapons. . #7 · Feb 3, 2008 wow...things were pretty tame in here...good news cause our judges are only accepting the correct answer: "Get them both" or "they are both great" #8 · Feb 3, 2008

That's because it's almost like asking, "Do I get the Shelby in White or Blue?". Mainly because it's different. Gas piston or not, the HK416 is just another AR to me, even if it does say HK on the side. If the choice is between the SL8 and the 416, I'd take the 416. #10 · Feb 4, 2008 I will agree with the 416 for the better ergonomics. #12 · Feb 4, 2008 hehe G36 for me, I have an AR-15. Maybe down the road ill buy a POF upper. #13 · Feb 29, 2008 Hard question, but my 416 upper sure is sweet. #14 · Feb 29, 2008 This has been bothering me for a while "Which" and "Considered" There is a spell check as well. #15 · Jun 28, 2010 Reliability wise, the G36 should outperform the Hk416 because the G36 proprietary magazine is more reliable than STANAG mags like the SA80A2 steel magazine. The XM8, which is basically a modified G36 outperformed the Hk416 in the US army dust tests. I like the HK416s ergonomics better than the G36 ergonomics. I like the XM8 ergonomics the best. Overall, I'd prefer the G36 but it would be cheaper for people with AR-15s to switch to the HK416. #16 · Jun 28, 2010 G36 by a long shot. I even bought a Solider of Fortune magazine because of it. I'm tired of the AR-15 platform, the G36 almost had everything I wanted in a rifle (and the XM8 does). Not saying I wouldn't want one, and if I ever was going to get a AR-15, I would get the MR556 #17 · Jun 28, 2010 i like both, although i shoot the 416 more, the g36 has a special place in my gunsafe/zombie preparedness kit, my problem with the g36 is that with body armor the g36e stock is too long for me, im too broke/lazy to swap for a g36c stock or airsoft kv stock... and until magpul releases the gmags then the 416 wins there too, my g36 mags are cracking on a few of them #18 · Jun 29, 2010 (Edited) When it comes to feeding reliability the G36 mags are better than any M16 mag (since the mags fit snugly up the receiver and have no dog leg). I do not know about the durability of the G36 mag although I never heard of complaints about the mags by German soldiers. Maybe the mags you had were old ones or they haven't got the polymer material right when they made your mags. I think that if they improved the polymer material (for eg. using fiberglass reinforced polymer like the AK-100 series mags or polymer from the Steyr AUG mags) then the cracking problems that you experienced would be gone. If G36 mags and M16 mags are made out of the same material, the G36 mags would be more durable for sure because the walls of the G36 mag are thicker. 0 Reply #19 · Jun 29, 2010 (Edited) I'll answer with a different approach. A "Weak Points List" (top five) G36 1. Non-standard sight mounting - limits the use of common sights w/o a high add-on rail 2. Proprietary Mag and Mag Well - while the G36 mag is a GREAT mag, it is far from "readily available" and limits options 3. Ambi Charging Handle - The G36's strongest and weakest control feature. GREAT for ambi use but takes up sight rail space on the top of the receiver again requiring and add on bridge (which raises the sight line requiring a cheekpiece) or short footprint sight like the Insight ISM. 4. No Bolt Release - Requires manipulation of the charging handle to release the bolt (or a sharp slap on the butt!) 5. No strong hand mag release - requires the weak hand to drop the mag (Both 4 and 5 were nicely addressed on the XM and slightly slow reloads compared to say the M4/HK416 and XM8) HK416 1. Uses the M4/M16 Standard Magazine (and not all) - If cheap (i.e. crap) magazines are used its superior reliability suffers. 2. Parts are Slow or Impossible to Obtain at Times in the US (i.e. barrels and the DOJ "barrel ban") 3. Charging Handle Location - Like all M16/M4 style weapons one has to break the rifle away from the shoulder/face to operate the charging handle. 4. High Cost Compared to Other M16/M4-style weapons (some, but you do get what you pay for) 5. No folding or modular stock option (due to the buffer tube). This way one can decide what is most important in weapon "selection". This is all opinion based on preference and experience anyway is it not? I know units who have both available to them and they both go out as per the needs of the individual operator. G3Kurz #20 · Jul 3, 2010 HK 416 hands down.
