The G36 was developed as a successor to the well-venerated G3 select-fire battle rifle. The first option was the prototype G11 caseless ammuniton assault rifle. As a result, Heckler and Koch stopped producing the 5.56mm x 45mm NATO cartridge. At the time, H&K saw no reason to produce a new rifle, as they were content with the HK33 and G41 rifles that were oriented for export. However, with the reunification of East and West Germany, the G11 was scrapped due to defense budget cuts, and shortly after, Heckler and Koch was acquired by British Aerospace's Royal Ordnance Division, now known as BAE Systems. Interest in producing a new German service rifle chambered in 5.56mm x 45 grew, and H&K developed "Project 50", or HK50, and was shortly trialed, where it was rated higher than a rival system: the Belgian Steyr AUG assault rifle. Production began in 1996.

Production of the subcarbine variant, named G36C, began in January of 2001. It was a variation on the existing carbine variant, the G36K. What sets the G36C apart from the G36K, as well as the G36, is that it has a shorter barrel than the G36K, which is offered with two types of flash hiders. The handguard and stock were shortened, and the fixed carry handle was replaced with a MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail. Additionally, the optical sights from the G36 and G36K were replaced in favor of rail-mounted detachable iron sights.
