The project aims to implement a hydrogen mobility ecosystem around two localities: Saint-Malo and Rennes. A station for producing hydrogen through electrolysis will be installed to supply the two territories. The production of hydrogen will be supported by the production of renewable electricity (solar, tidal and possibly wind).

The main part of the project involves the commissioning of renewable hydrogen production plants and the deployment of a fleet of hydrogen powered vehicles in the territories: cars, busses, rental trucks, local authorities and businesses or industries as well as 4 hydrogen powered vessels, including 2 in retrofitting. In all, over 80 hydrogen vehicles may be deployed across the two territories.

Project objectives:

  • Techniques:

-    Production of hydrogen through electrolysis (using sea water in the St Malo case – feedback from the Energy Observer ship)

-    Installation of photovoltaic solar panels is being studied on both sites (from a few dozen to several hundred)

-    Ongoing discussions to establish supply contracts with existing and future renewable energy projects, in short supply chain

  • Energy related:

-    Sizing of the production station in Rennes:

      o    Production capacity: 222 kg/day,

o    Rate of use of the electrolyser: 80%,

      o    Tolal electricity consumption (at 100%): 12 MWh/day,

      o    Electrolyser water consumption (at 100%): 2220 l/day,

      o    Storage capacity: 330 Kg of H2 at 200 bars + 100 kg of H2 at 350/700 bars, 2 dispensers for 350 bars + 700 bars.

-    Sizing of the production station in Saint-Malo:

      o    Production capacity: 324 kg/day,

o    Rate of use of the electrolyser: 80%,

      o    Tolal electricity consumption (at 100%): 18 MWh/day,

      o    Electrolyser water consumption (at 100%): 3240 l/day,

      o    Storage capacity: 450 kg of H2 at 200 bars + 150 kg of H2 at 350/700 bars, 2 dispensers for 350 bars + 700 bars.

  • Environmental: 2,722,720 kg less CO2 per year and 1,092,000 litres of fossil fuels avoided per year.

  • User involvement:

-    Professional and captive fleets prioritised, by late 2022

-    Individual vehicles will also be authorised to recharge

  • Economic: Based on the break-even amount and to make the H2 solution more attractive than Diesel, the average resale price of hydrogen over 10 years will be below €10 for the Saint-Malo and Rennes fuelling stations. The main objective being to reduce the initiation time and reduce the costs involved in setting up a hydrogen fleet.

  • Industrial: Reproduce the project on an industrial scale to equip the territory (hinterland and coast).

Added value of the project:

Demonstrate the stability of a solid and replicable H2 ecosystem, economically, technically and from an energy standpoint.
