Sino-Vietnamese word from 河內, composed of (rivers) and (inside), meaning "inside rivers".

capital city of Vietnam First coined in 1831 by Emperor Minh Mạng of the Nguyễn dynasty, reflecting its geographical position between the Red River and the Đáy river of Northern Vietnam.
