London English - South-East England No, the first is both better and more common. 'He' and 'she' usually come first in a phrase joined by 'and'. Here, where the phrase is subject of the verb, this matches the fact that 'he' would be used if it was on its own. ('I'/'me' often behave differently in this respect.)Miss Julie

Brittany, NW France English (Midlands UK) The key to all these questions is this: which would you use if it stood alone? At the dinner table, he argues whether football or soccer requires more skill? OR At the dinner table, him argues whether football or soccer requires more skill? I hope the answer is obvious.Loob

English UKKeith Bradford said: The key to all these questions is this: which would you use if it stood alone?... Click to expand...I don't think it is quite as simple as that any more, Keith: see the thread Me and her went to the pub. (And also see etb's comment about I/me in post 2.) That said, ~ (1) is definitely the right answer to Leonardo's question ~ I agree that "What would you use if the pronoun stood alone?" is a useful rule of thumb for students of English. "What would you use if the pronoun stood alone?" happens to be the rule of thumb that I follow too, but it isn't the guideline universally followed by well-educated younger speakers of BrE, and I think students of English should know that.
