Messages 559 I am looking to buy my first semi-hollow guitar and have narrowed down to these 2. Budget wise looking at this price-point. Due to lockdown, I'm not able to get in-store and play just yet. Anyone have experience or can comment on build quality, pickups etc? I'm quite enamored with the Olive Drab/Torino colour and the below are the ones I'm keen on.Gretsch G2622T Streamliner Center Block With Bigsby® - Torino Green
Revitalizing the best elements from the past, the G2622T Streamliner™ Center Block Double-Cut with Bigsby® bursts into the modern music […] colemansmusic.com.auEpiphone ES335 Exclusive (Olive Drab Green)
The ES-335 is Epiphone's version of the historic guitar that has been impressing guitar players all over the world for decades. From the moment it first appeared in 1958, the Gibson ES-335 set an unmatched standard. The Epiphone ES-335 is one of the best deals today for guitar players who want... www.mannys.com.au Other guitars I have are : Gibson Les Paul Standard, Gibson SG '61 reissue, Yamaha Revstar (P90's), Fender Strat & Jaguar. Thanks!CBHScott

Gretsch G2622 - neck is slightly thinner, pickups are OK (like the Epi more PAF-sounding than “Gretschy” filtertron), that tension-bar Bigsby can make the string tension and tuning stability a bit wonky, BUT the frets are gonna be darn-near flawless. Comparing the two, I would opt for the Gretsch, BUT for for the hard tail version for $100 less, which also happens to be $100 less than the 335.DiAmoroso

Messages 910 I’ve played many models of both the recent “Inspired By” Epiphones and Streamliner Gretsches, and across the board the Gretsches have been better guitars. In general I’ve found the Epiphones to be inconsistent, but not bad, basically falling within expectations for the price point. The Gretsches have been exceptionally consistent on the other hand, and in my opinion you’re not going to find a better guitar under $500. However, my judgements of these guitars are based on their price point. Considering you have some pretty nice guitars already, either one is likely going to feel cheap in comparison. In my experience at least.DiAmoroso

Messages 559 Thanks for the feedback, this is really helpful! I was a bit hesitant when seeing the Epiphone as I've played a few (years back) and I just couldn't deal with the feel and QC control after having my Les Paul. From most reviews I'm seeing, they are saying QC has really improved and that these 'inspired by' play great which is why I have been considering. When I bought my Revstar last year, I was actually pleasantly surprised how good this was to play for the money at $800 AUD. I guess that's why I'm hoping that at the $1k AUD mark either of these should hold up OK. I think I am going to really want to have a play in-store to really make a choice. Also, can't find a Torino green without the Bigsby, of course! hahaFulldrive-1

Messages 5,924 I have the Epi 335. It must have been made on a Wednesday because it's super. Change out the OEM pickups for Rio Grande.Random1643

Messages 842 +1 play in-store is the deal In my experience I haven't gotten much consistent quality from Gretsch till I hit the 50XX line. My 2 cents.sunking101

Something a little different. I have a Bigsby similar to that and found that by not running the strings under the tension bar all the tuning issues cleared up. That's assuming you get a decent break after the bridge without using the tension bar. Worked well on my Vantage 635V.

Don't be concerned about the Bigsby, see my previous post above. And you have to admit, the Bigsby looks great on the guitar, nice retro chic look. The Vantage I mentioned above came with a stop tailpiece, I installed the trem myself. At first I had tuning issues, but as mentioned above, I just don't run the strings under the bar. Not only did the tuning improve, it made it feel very slinky, like a trapeze tailpiece.

Messages 302 I know you didn't ask for other guitar opinions, but I'd also look at the Ibanez offerings. They make some killer semi hollow stuff. And the PRS SE Zach Myers. Whatever you choose, good luck!Sleeping At Sea

Definitely seeing some VERY nice Ibanez and also the Yamaha SA2200 - that looks next level build quality wise! S

Messages 559 Just an update! I was able to get into a store this weekend and spent some time with the Epiphone and Gretsch's. The first Epiphone ES-335 was the Vintage Sunburst and it was a bit of a mess. Action was super high, sloppy fretwork and binding. I then played a Gretsch Streamliner and it was setup perfectly, but I wasn't getting the same mojo from it. Didn't gel with the neck as much or the pups. I then got another Ep 335, the Olive Drab out of a box and it was PERFECT. Setup great and everything was just spot on. Now we are talking! I felt for the money that I'm pretty happy with it so ended up walking out with it I've kept most of my guitars stock but I think this is the one I'll have some fun with. Put on a bigsby, change out the pick-ups etc. Fun times! Jjmerwin62

Click to expand...You're probablhy well past this point, but there's an easy and reversable pickup mod for the Streamliner Broad'trons that makes them more "Gretschy". Basically, you remove half of the pickup pole piece screws. Three from the top row on the trable side and three from the bottom row on the bass side. For looks, I put black plastic screws into the holes. You still get some humbucking (mine are dead quiet, but the sound is more single coilish. I had planned on replacing the pups with Filter'trons and I may some day, but not any time soon, and if I do, it with be with TV Jones. I'm in no rush to stick $400 into a guitar I'm very happy with.
