I have a 440i Gran Coupe. Had there been such a thing as an M4 Gran Coupe, I’d have bought one but there wasn’t. The 440i is more discreet and elegant, and sounds much better, especially with the MPPSK mine has. Also goes much harder than you think. But if you only need 2drs, the M4 is well just an M4 even if it does sound terrible compared to the 440i. It’s much better drive (provided you get the Competition version). On that last point, make sure the M4 is a Competition model - the non-Comp versions, especially the early cars, are quite a handful and don’t have a great reputation.dazecoop

And most of the ones I have my eye on are the early non-Comp cars. What reputation do they have exactly? What do you mean by a handful etc? Cheers. Wolands Advocate

The fact that they can be a handful really appealed to me. I wouldn't blame anyone going for the more tied down/compliant Comp model though for sure. The Comp model always gets the better reviews overall as you mention. The mistake I made was going for a December 2018 model with the OPF, and I'd forgot about the OPF when I went for it, and if I had my time again I'd go for a pre 2018 model to avoid it. dazecoop

I know that Litchfield Motors offer a plate of-sorts to help mitigate this issue & I've already had a quote for this in prep (incase I buy a high milage car, I'll suspect this will be one of the first things I do).DCT can overheat if I track it. Fair enough, can get an upgraded cooler if I find myself in this situation. I want to track the car, but not that regularly. Not a major concern for me.But from all the research & reading I've done, I haven't heard anyone mention anything specifically about early cars to watch out for, so some insight into this would be much appreciated if you could.cerb4.5lee said: ...forgot about the OPF when I went for it, and if I had my time again I'd go for a pre 2018 model to avoid it. I was a bit annoyed with myself that I'd forgot about it. I've lost all the pops/bangs/crackles on mine because of the OPF, plus it is more quiet because of the OPF too.
I had a 2017 model F56 Cooper S before the M4, and I quite liked the pops/bangs on that(many don't though!). If the M4 still had the pops/bangs/crackles on it, it would add a little bit more theatre...and I really appreciate that sort of thing. I can't moan too much though...because at least I do have a mega loud exhaust on the 370 to fall back on!

I had the silverstone interior on my M4 with full leather so silverstone dash. I thought it was lovely inside to balance things. interstellar

Thanks for the heads-up!Edited by dazecoop on Saturday 20th November 10:22 I think it was the early 2014/15 cars that were a handful. Mine was a 2016 16 plate non comp in tanzanite and I wish I had never sold it. I loved that car.Nothing has been that special since. I think the early handling issue were sorted in the lci model so a 2016 or 2017 is the sweet spot. This was mine. cerb4.5lee

This is something that I'd love to know for definite as well. I've even read that some of the later non-Comp cars have most of the same upgrades that the Comp models have anyway(suspension/diff/mapping etc). I don't think that anyone truly knows for sure though. Edited by cerb4.5lee on Saturday 20th November 11:24 interstellar

So when you say a handful you mean a physical handful in terms of handing characteristics! Would love to hear more about this & how BMM improved/fixed it! cerb4.5lee

I think noise was a big let down for me in my M4. I came from a C63 (6.2) so the M4 had big shoes to fill but my 2019 Comp car sounds very quiet and restricted. Earlier M3/4s do sound nicer. On the subject of disappointing noise, road/tyre noise in the cabin, especially on the motorway, is poor. But, when the stars align, and the road or track opens up, M cars shine. Oh and San Marino Blue swayed it for me. cerb4.5lee

I'm far from an expert, but BMW changed most of the suspension/altered the rear diff, and they mapped the torque delivery so that it comes in less aggressively. That in turn made the car a bit more friendlier when pushing on. I still personally have some slight issues with the rear diff on mine though, and you can upset the rear diff really easily when you are going for it on a country road(great fun don't get me wrong/but equally it can feel quite unnerving at high speed though). I didn't get any of that sort of thing in the E92 M3 I had for example in comparison. Wolands Advocate

Thanks for the heads-up!Edited by dazecoop on Saturday 20th November 10:22 I wasn’t trying to be unhelpful - I just saw no point regurgitating journalists’ reviews when you can read their views directly from the linked article. Knowing BMW’s process of incremental improvement, I dare say it’s true that later non-Comp cars are better than the earlier ones. How do things like insurance etc compare between an M4 and a 440i?I’ve always been pleasantly surprised how relatively cheap my car is to run. Insurance isn’t nuts, fuel consumption is low and servicing costs are low. Oh and if you get a car registered before 03/17 the tax is much lower for at least another 15 months minimum due to the extra £335/annum levied on all cars with an original list price over £40k. cerb4.5lee

Insurance isn’t nuts, fuel consumption is low and servicing costs are low. They are the two downsides for me with the full fat M cars. You get hammered with the "M Tax" for servicing in comparison to the other models in the range, plus insurance has always been(with the exception of the F13 640d I had) far higher on the M cars too for me. langtounlad

I have a tanzanite blue 440i. It's a fantastic colour when the sun shines and must be wonderful if you live e.g. in California. Unfortunately most of the time, it just looks like a dark inky blue in this country. On those rare days in the summer however...................I made the choice of 440i Vs M4 as I prefer to be discrete, I even debadged the 440i. I also believe that the 440i is better suited the roads down here in Dorset. (narrow & potholed) Pioneer

Put's the wind up you because you feel like the rear end is about to come over your shoulder. Turn off aids and drive old school. Imo, handling is night and day - and you get a bit of warning first cerb4.5lee

I'll give it a go down the same stretch of road where I can feel it doing it with everything off to see then thanks. If you don't get a reply from me...then you'll know that I've put it into a field!
