HGV Licences: Cat C And Cat C+E Explained - TRS Training
What is a Category C licence?
This licence allows you to drive the most common type of HGV vehicle. Drivers of this category of vehicles tend to do more local deliveries than large vehicles. A category C licence allows drivers to drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, but must not exceed 32 tonnes. Category C (or Class 2 as they are otherwise known) licences typically cover a vehicle with a cab and trailer fixed permanently together. In other words, what we would consider a ‘standard lorry’ or a rigid vehicle.
What is a Category C1 licence?
A category C1 licence allows you to drive any rigid vehicle weighing over 3.5 tonnes and up to 7.5 tonnes such as ambulances and removal trucks.
What is a Category C+E HGV licence?
A category C+E licence is the most comprehensive licence you can hold. With this licence, drivers can drive and handle a drawbar or articulated vehicle (artic) up to 44 tonnes. This licence is also known as Class 1, allowing the driver to drive any large goods style vehicle needed, including a double trailer.
