High nature value (HNV) farmland Data Prod-ID: DAT-145-en Created 23 Sep 2015 Published 06 Oct 2015 Last modified 23 May 2022 3 min read This is an old version, kept for reference only. Go to latest version Topics: Biodiversity — Ecosystems This page was archived on 23 May 2022 with reason: Other (New version data-and-maps/data/high-nature-value-farmland-1 was published) The concept of HNV farmland ties together biodiversity to the continuation of farming on certain types of land and the maintenance of specific farming systems. The general goal of the data set is to enhance the European map of HNV farmland that shows the estimated distribution and presence likelihood of HNV farmland across the whole European territory. Disclaimer: The objective of the HNV farmland map produced by EEA is to estimate the presence likelihood of HNV farmland within Europe using existing Europe-wide datasets. The EEA points out that the existing datasets may have drawbacks for HNV farmland identification and recommends therefore that the map be used as a proxy for the distribution of HNV farmland at European level appropriate for assessment purposes only. Environmental zones version 8 of the Environmental Stratification: Metzger, M.J., Bunce, R.G.H, Jongman, R.H.G, Müche,r C.A. and Watkins, J.W., (2005). A climatic stratification of the environment of Europe, Global Ecology and Biogeography 14: 549-563. Version 8 includes Cyprus and the European coastline has been made consistent with the CLC coastline. The environmental stratification does not cover Iceland. Turkey is only partially covered, therefore a similar stratification of environmental zones has been provided by the Turkish national experts.
Natura 2000 was used to provide information on protected sites in Europe. Additionally, nationally designated areas (CDDA) were applied in those countries where data of NATURA 2000 and the EMERALD network were not available (Turkey, Norway, Iceland, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, FYR Macedonia). For Croatia the Emerald Network (proposal of NATURA 2000 for Croatia) was used.

The HNV farmland map aims to gain a better insight into the distribution and extent of farmland that is of inherent biodiversity value, and to develop a more effective tool for carrying out further analyses on spatial and time trends.
A first version (2008) of the European HNV map was based on CORINE land cover 2000 and is available by contacting Maria-Luisa Paracchini directly: luisa.paracchini@jrc.ec.europa.eu
The enhanced update of HNV farmland in Europe was carried out in 2012 in the same way as the HNV farmland assessment according to the JRC/EEA methodology described in Paracchini, M. L.; Petersen, J.-E.; Hoogeveen, Y.; Bamps, C.; Burfield, I. and van Swaay, C., 2008. High Nature Value Farmland in Europe. An estimate of the distribution patterns on the basis of land cover and biodiversity data. JRC Scientific and Technical Reports. European Communities, Luxembourg.
The main focus of the 2012 exercise was to update the HNV farmland dataset based on the CLC data 2006 and to include countries previously not part of the European HNV farmland assessment.

Page Archived Agriculture The agricultural sector is one of the main land users in Europe and thus shapes landscapes in rural areas. It has various direct and indirect impacts on the environment and is itself dependent on natural resources. Page Archived Policy context The agricultural sector is one of the main land users in Europe and thus shapes landscapes in rural areas. It has various direct and indirect impacts on the environment and depends itself on natural resources. Patterns of agricultural production vary considerably across Europe and no general picture can be drawn. Emissions from agriculture arising from, for example, the use of fertilisers and pesticides, have decreased recently.Used in indicators
Indicator Specification Archived Agriculture: area under management practices potentially supporting biodiversity This indicator is based on two sub-indicators and shows trends in area (as proportion of the total utilised area) of two categories of agricultural land that are not mutually exclusive: a. High nature value farmland area. b. Area under organic farming. a.'High nature value farmland area' (ha) indicates the area where farming systems are sustaining a high level of biodiversity. They are often characterised by extensive farming practices, associated with a high species and habitat diversity or the presence of species of European conservation concern. b.'Area under organic farming' (ha) indicates trends in the organic farming area and the share of the organic farming area in the total utilised agricultural area. Farming is only considered to be organic at the European Union (EU) level if it complies with Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007, which provides a comprehensive framework for production of crops and livestock; labelling, processing and marketing of organic products; and the import of organic products into the EU. Note: This indicator comprises two elements: a quality parameter (distribution of high nature value farmland) and a response parameter (area under agri-environment and organic farming). Both are relevant for an assessment of environmental sustainability although they are not necessarily linked.Permalinks
