Over the last 12-18 months the TV market has been nothing short of crazy. Normally you would have to hand over at least £500 for a TV with 4K capabilities. With brands including Hisense stepping into the market, costs have been tumbling, meaning great value for the customer.
Sitting firmly in the budget section is the Hisense H43N5300, initially an unknown Chinese brand, now making waves, especially in areas such as TV’s, fridges and washing machines. Don’t be fooled, they now produce goods under many well-known brand names including Sharp and Toshiba and are quickly becoming one of the best value manufacturers globally.
The Hisense H43N5300 Design and build
The TV came well packaged, like many other units it was a simple case of cutting and sliding out the main TV unit from its supplied box. The legs are then attached separately and then the TV can be lifted into place. If you need the measurements for transport they are 63cm High, 108cm wide and around 17cm in depth in its box.
Looking at the frame and legs, don’t expect a mac book pro finish here, to keep costs low the TV set is mainly made up of a black shiny plastic finish. It’s perfectively acceptable, gone are the days of large wide frames that would normally surround your TV set.
One point to consider is its stability, with the legs being slightly smaller than other TV sets we have tested. Just be careful not to hit the top of the TV set with any substantial force (if you have children).
Overall style this scores on the lower end, simply because Hisense are keeping unit production costs as small as possible to focus on the hardware inside the TV.
TV performance
Hisense have done a great job of providing a full 4K display with such a small budget. This TV displays a full 4K panel at 3840 x 2160 – 60Hz. As the model name suggests this TV has a 43 inch screen size (measured diagonally corner to corner) and is one of the most popular screen sizes for UK homes.
Note that the H43N5300 doesn’t have HDR as standard, although you would typically only expect this as a feature on TV’s almost double the cost. What will appeal to most is that this TV does have hardware that allows for 4K to be up scaled from HD, we look at this in more detail in the picture quality section below.
After reviewing TV units including the LG 43UJ651V, we can report that the unit holds its own vs rival more expensive branded units.

Picture Quality of the Hisense H43N5300
Hisense have taken a smart approach to making TV sets, shave costs where possible and focus on what matters most, picture and sound. As above the style of the TV set may leave a little to be desired but there is no holding back when it comes to picture quality.
From our tests the viewing angles are great scoring a 180/180. This means grandad sitting in his favourite chair, sitting slightly off centre, will still have a great view and picture quality.
Buyers may want to make small adjustments to suit their screen colour preferences, but the majority will be fine with the colours provided on launch.
Testing the Hisense with a 4K Blu-ray player really proved how capable it is vs other similar models. You would have to pay almost double the price to see any significant detail changes. There were very little ghosting or article defects that were visible from our 12ft test range.
Remember you are getting a TV panel with what we class as a raw 4K panel. This means that there is no ‘Ultra Luminance’ like you would find on an LG, or ‘HDR’ that can be found on many mid-high end TV units. However, the picture was bright and punchy and our whole test panel were surprised with the overall experience.

Sound quality
One main advertised feature of the Hisense H43N5300 is the promise of the built in dbx-tv sound bar audio quality. Is the performance the same as a sound bar? No, but it’s better than your typical low Watt speakers you find on similar priced TV units.
If the sound really is a big deciding factor for you then we recommend you would buy your own sound bar, for the typical home user then what is supplied will be suitable for your needs.
Is it good for gaming?
If you are looking to keep the kids happy, or even a TV for your own gamer pad, then the H43N5300 would be more than capable. The crisp 4K panel will really bring your games to life through the use of a PS4 Pro or BX1 that can output in 4K. Failing this then there is the option to upscale into 4K using the built in software.
We tested both upscaling using a PS4 and playing in 4K using a PS4 Pro, there was very little difference between them. The result was still a beautiful as we drove around Los Santos in GTA5.

Hisense H43N5300 Features
The H43N5300 does fall down slightly in what is included as standard features. Freeview is included and there is the nice touch of adding Netflix, YouTube and other buttons directly onto the remote. The TV comes with your basic smart apps and an internet browser, but does lack its own OS or other nice to have features you would find on most LG, Panasonic or SONY TV’s.
Connectors on this TV include: 1 Composite socket – Older DVD players and set top boxes 2 USB ports – For use with Chromecast, Amazon fire stick 3 HDMI ports – Subscription TV, Blu-ray and most gaming systems
In addition there is an optical connection, built in wi-fi and Ethernet port.
Pros

- Great value for money
- Does the basics well
Cons
- Average sound quality

Our Verdict
Pound for pound one of the best TV’s on the market today. Enabling those on a tight budget to enjoy a true 4K experience. Suitable for those who value visuals and audio over style and design. For a noticeable difference in visuals you would need to spend in excess of twice the cost. Also loved by many, this TV has (633) 5* Star ratings from one of the UK’s major high street providers.
Games who are able to take advantage of the higher display resolutions will really enjoy their experience with this TV unit.
