As Sarnia-Lambton’s industry partner, BASES builds on the legacy of three foundational organizations - the Industrial Education Cooperative (IEC), Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER), and the Sarnia-Lambton Environmental Association (SLEA). With decades of collective experience, these groups laid the groundwork for collaboration, innovation, and meaningful community engagement.

BASES continues this legacy by focusing on four core pillars: worker safety, emergency preparedness, environmental monitoring, and communication and outreach. At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to building trust and strengthening the relationship between industry and the Sarnia-Lambton community.

The BASES Safety Partnership is a unique tripartite model that brings together industry, contractors, and labour unions in a shared commitment to advancing workplace safety in Sarnia-Lambton. Rooted in trust, respect, and collaboration, this partnership supports a learning-focused approach that recognizes people as the solution and sees safety as an ongoing, adaptive process.

As a workplace training provider, BASES offers expert-led, up-to-date safety courses through our centralized training platform, BASES SiteReady. Whether online or in person, our training helps ensure workers are prepared, confident, and compliant before accessing local facilities.

BASES supports continuous improvement in environmental performance across Sarnia-Lambton through collaborative monitoring, data transparency, and stakeholder engagement. Our network of air monitoring equipment is operated, maintained, and quality-controlled by third-party contractors, with data collected on behalf of our members and shared through Clean Air Sarnia & Area (CASA).

CASA enables near real-time access to local air quality information, promoting open data sharing and deeper public understanding of environmental impacts. Our collaborative approach includes multi-stakeholder committees made up of member sites, government agencies, regulators, community groups, and First Nations partners, who work together to identify opportunities, set shared goals, and implement practical solutions that protect both people and the environment.

Since 1952, Sarnia-Lambton has been home to the first industry-funded cooperative in Canada devoted to environmental protection - a legacy built on openness, transparency, and collective responsibility for regional sustainability.
