torontotim Deal Fanatic Nov 17, 2012 5615 posts 5336 upvotes Toronto I made the move to charcoal in a Vision grill some time ago, and it is not a big deal at all. Use a chimney, wad up some newspaper, fill the chimney with charcoal and light. Dump it out 15 minutes later, and in another 10 minutes start to grill. When I’m done I open all the vents and let it burn completely down to minimize the ash etc. Might be a bit wasteful but it means I clean the grill out maybe 2x per year. Bags of charcoal are easy to grab at Rona etc. Long story short - skip the propane insert gimmick. Simpler is better.

I do the same but start my coals with a paper towel with vegetable oil on it, lot less paper and ash bits flying away compared to newspaper.

vuongt Jr. Member Sep 24, 2018 179 posts 285 upvotes I've got one of the regular ones with a gas insert. I've yet to use my gas insert even once. As other posters have said just wait for the regular ones to go on sale at Costco. They currently have a Louisiana 24" Kamado in store for 800, I believe the colour was blue.

duttydeals Deal Addict May 5, 2016 1010 posts 1431 upvotes Scarborough, ON just my two cents.... and assuming you have the space, my recommendation would be to buy a separate propane/gas BBQ in addition to a kamado. you'll have lots of capacity to cook for larger gatherings. my wife won't let me buy a propane/gas bbq. she's afraid that i'll get lazy and stop cooking with charcoal. i'm dead serious. so i've got a vision kamado m as my main grill, and then i also have a smaller weber kettle for increased capacity. Stay positive, stay frugal. 😃
