How does the WE Banter's CPM-S35VN blade steel compare to the Spyderco's Para 3 lightweight's CTS-BD1N in terms of edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance, etc.? I live in an extremely humid/salty environment and both steels have done fine. The BD1N is easier to sharpen but up to this point, thats really the only difference as far as I can tell. Both knives are excellent. Top Doc Dan Member Posts: 15574 Joined: Thu Nov 08, 2012 4:25 am Location: In a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity.

I'd say the S35VN holds an edge longer in general, but the BD1N is a lot easier to sharpen very sharp. It holds an edge well enough. Of course, it all depends on the edge angel because it could out perform a knife in S35VN if it were thinner at the edge. IIRC, Spyderco isn't heat treating the BD1N much harder than s35vn. But my kitchen knives are BD1N @ 62 or 63, which is a hardness I don't think s35vn can achieve. Top kennethsime Member Posts: 4882 Joined: Thu Dec 29, 2011 8:28 pm Location: CaliforniaRe: How Does S35VN Compare to CTS BD1N?

One resource I stumbled upon the other day is the Spyderco Steel Chart. Using this interactive chart, you can compare S35VN and BD1N. Based largely on the 3% vanadium, I would expect S35VN to out-cut BD1N, all other things being equal. I would expect BD1N to be a bit tougher, and a bit more stainless, and generally be a more balanced EDC steel. Both are fine steels, but S35VN is generally considered the higher-end steel. Of course, there are other variables at play, like how was the steel heat treated and sharpened - both the heat treat and the edge geometry are going to effect how the steel performs. Then you've got a few other things to consider, when comparing those two knives. The Para 3 has a one-hand opening hole, a 50/50 choil for fine detail work, a full flat ground blade for easy slicing, a bit more blade length, and a compression lock for secure locking & easy release. If you like the Para 3 LW and want a higher-end steel, you might consider this KnifeJoy exclusive in CPM 20CV. 20CV is similar to another steel you may have heard of, M390, and represents a very fine balance of wear resistance, toughness, and corrosion resistance. I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel. Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.
