How To Convert Mtext To Text-Functions & Commands-ZWSOFT

When working in ZWCAD, you may encounter drawings containing multi-line MText objects. While there are situations where you need to edit each text individually. Converting MText into Text objects enables targeted, line-by-line modifications for greater flexibility and precision.

What is the difference between MText and Text?

In CAD, there are two main types of text objects: Text and MText.

Text is a single-line text object, suitable for labels, dimensions, or short notes.

MText is a multi-line text object, similar to a text box, ideal for paragraphs or content that requires consistent formatting.

Text objects are independent line by line, while MText objects are edited as a single, unified entity. Therefore, the difference is not simply about “single line or multiple lines,” but whether the text is managed and edited as a whole.

For a clearer visual distinction, see the example in the figure below. Although both are two lines, MText is selected as a single object when clicked, while the Text allows selection only of the line you click on, since each line is an independent object.

Best Practices

To achieve better results when converting MText to Text, consider the following suggestions:

Confirm your editing needs before conversion

Before performing the conversion, determine whether you need to edit text line by line or perform batch operations, to decide if splitting MText into Text is necessary.

Be aware of formatting changes

Some text formatting—such as alignment, line spacing, or special characters—may change during conversion. It is recommended to review and adjust the text afterward.

Use layer management in combination

Place the converted Text objects on appropriate layers to facilitate later selection, modification, or unified management.

Backup complex text beforehand

For MText objects with extensive or complex content, it is advisable to save a copy before conversion in case you need to revert changes.

FAQs

Why can’t I convert MText to Text still?

This usually occurs because the selected object is not an MText, or the text resides within a Block or external reference (Xref), making it uneditable. Additionally, if the layer containing the text is locked or frozen, the conversion will fail. Please confirm the object type and ensure the layer is editable before attempting the conversion again.

Why does the converted Text look different from the original MText?

MText supports advanced text features such as automatic line breaks, paragraph formatting, and overall alignment. These features may not be fully preserved when converting to Text. After conversion, MText is usually split into multiple independent Text objects, and the arrangement or spacing may change. This is normal, and it is recommended to make adjustments as needed after conversion.

Why are only some of the MText objects successfully converted?

When MText contains complex formatting, special characters, or mixed styles, it may affect the completeness of the conversion, causing some content to fail to convert properly. To achieve more reliable results, it is recommended to simplify the text formatting before conversion—for example, by using a consistent font or reducing unnecessary style settings—then perform the conversion again.

Converting MText to Text in ZWCAD allows you to edit text line by line, offering greater flexibility and control for precise modifications. Whether you choose the EXPLODE command, the Express Tools menu, or the MTEXP command, each method provides a straightforward way to perform the conversion. By following best practices you can ensure a smooth and accurate conversion process.
