BlizzofOZ B What is used to remove the pulley on the alternator? More specifically, is it a nut that is inset on the pulley and a socket wrench is needed? If so, how/what is used to keep the pulley stationary (as it is free moving both ways)? I was able to get a (I believe) 24mm socket wrench on it, but while it is in the car, it is very hard to see if it is a nut at all. #1 · Dec 3, 2011 What is used to remove the pulley on the alternator? Are you talking about adjustment pulley or pulley attached to the alternator? #3 · Dec 3, 2011 Sorry... '92 Jetta gas 8v, with a/c I'm talking about the belt pulley on the alternator. I see now that it is a 8mm allen wrench. How do keep the pulley/fans stationary? If you are looking at the alternator, dead on from the passenger side, which way does the allen nut move to loosen? I would think counter clockwise... but want to make sure as I don't want to force and strip the nut. Sorry if I sound noobish... #4 · Dec 3, 2011 If you mean the pulley that is attached to the alternator you need a socket not an allen key. You'll fit the correct size socket over the nut wrap a towel or t-shirt around the fan/pulley and hold it tight so it doesn't move. Grab an impact wrench and giver. Should be real easy. #5 · Dec 3, 2011 or you can grab the pulley with a pipe wrench, hold it, then spin off the nut #6 · Dec 3, 2011 Thanks, I was able to get it off... Once I knew how to do it. I'm going to install Toywagen's A/C delete pulley. I have to remove the A/C compressor... and boy the first bolt I tried ain't moving. Seems it would be easier if I just remove the alternator first. Plus, I don't think I have room to pull out the compressor with the alternator on. #7 · Dec 3, 2011 yes, remove the alternator... 0 Reply #8 · Dec 3, 2011 I know simple stuff... if you've never done it before, this is how you learn. #9 · Dec 4, 2011 Use some blue Loctite on the threads when you reinstall that alternator pulley. Hey, you're that far into in, might as well take it apart, clean it, and replace the bearings inside. The brushes and regulater screw on the back if it's a Bosch.....about $23 at most auto parts stores, and a 5 minute replacement. ....it's how you learn! Great time to paint the alternator case as well..... #10 · Dec 4, 2011 PB blaster really is your friend in these cases. Works every time for me, and I just removed my A/C compressor as well. Your going to have to kind of finagle it out of there Insert Quotes Post Reply
