I bought a laptop a little over a year ago. It's an HP Laptop 17-by1xxx with Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

Almost since the day I bought the computer the fan tends to run very, very loud almost continuously. Quite often when I reset the computer it will boot up with a Fan 90b error.

The computer appears to run just fine, but the fan is quite loud and obnoxious and I can't imagine this is good for the computer.

I downloaded a temperature app and all of the temperatures appear to hover around 40-41 degrees C.

I haven't tried to open up the laptop as I'm not sure that's a good next step.

HP's website suggests things like resetting the computer and updating the Bios, but none of that provided any benefit.

Any thoughts?

Hi, Robert  :welcome: to Bleeping Computer!

Loud laptop fans mean heat; if your fans are always loud then that means your laptop is always hot. Dust and hair buildup are unavoidable, and only serves to reduce airflow. Reduced airflow means poor heat dissipation, so you'll need to physically clean the machine to make things better

Welcome to BC...

Since it was very loud from Day One...it was likely best that you return it. If it is still under warranty

that would be best.

Other than that....have you checked to see if the CPU is being used a lot even while you are not

using it and no programs are open? Have you looked at the processes running immediately after

reboot? Something like a crypto miner could be running.

In the meantime, consider always using an external usb cooling assembly (one giant fan or twin fans).  I have been doing so for years, each laptop always has an ext usb cooling assembly.  Biggies for home use, smaller ones for traveling.

5 years ago my daughter ignored my advice and purchased an HP laptop; it had the most annoying high-pitched whine and I never could find a solution. I tried everything including fan-driven cooling pads and nada.

HP customer pseudo-service was as helpful as a hangover, would not accept a return and said the unit was functioning normally. So it is still sitting in her closet, buried under other stuff, and she has an Apple which she is deliriously happy with.

Because of the high number of abandoned threads, if there is no response after 3 days I remove the post from my answer list. If you wish further help after that PM me.

Please Post the Exact Model Number of your pc, the one you posted is leaving out where the xxx is.  That is a generic number, we need to full number with the directions below.

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.

When I go to the HP laptop support it shows the xxx but lists 7NM99UA#ABA as the product number.

I assume you tried >>THIS  I don't see any others complaining with the same model.

Is it still under warranty?

Buddy's suggestion is very good in #3  May just be a noisy fan.  You could monitor the fan too just to see if the rpm is too high for normal use.  That may give you an idea if it is just a poorly made fan.

Use this command in an elevated command prompt to see what the temps are

wmic /namespace:\\root\wmi PATH MSAcpi_ThermalZoneTemperature ^ get CurrentTemperature, CriticalTripPoint, PassiveTripPoint

Do you have HP Coolsense installed?  If so can you open it and see what there is to offer.

It very well may need to be taken apart and reseat the fan or replace it.  It's pretty easy to do but you could also easily break some plastic.  You could blow air in with a canned electronics duster but I don't like doing that.

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.

It is not still under warranty.

The issue is it occasionally is very quiet so I don't think there is any hidden background software running. Even when basically nothing is running it will typically run very, very loud.

Put your smart phone microphone a few inches from the exhaust and record it for us, we love recordings!  The exhaust on that one is at the base of and at the front the monitor I believe, or do it from the back.

At the moment it is running perfectly fine. I would say 90% of the time it is very loud but then it occasionally runs like it is right now making me think the problem is magically cured. I have to go to work soon, but as soon as it acts up again I will record it.

This may be normal under medium to heavy loads even, like if the computer is updating while you are doing a few other things.  I always Pause Updates so that this don't happen.  Record it and if it sounds abnormal we will take it further.  I have a few HP's that have loud fans under even medium loads.

So I recorded a video, but maybe I'm just an idiot but I can't figure out how to link it here.

That may be good but I would say holding a smartphone speaker up to the fan as suggested will be better and faster to upload for most.

You would have to host the video somewhere and share the link, like youtube, imgr or many other sites.  It can be fairly confusing but not that hard once you've done it.
