August 02, 2014, 04:26:59 PM The xpg had heated handles, and the added parts for to make it so. Other than that there is no difference between the two. Andre. thecfarm

August 02, 2014, 09:08:42 PM The XPG model has a heated carb and handles.Chain gauge used to be a regional thing, however now with the advent of pre-packaged saws (ie Husqvarna 400 series saws) gauge is becoming what the saw takes out of the box. Makes it hard where normally in a certain region one would run the opposite gauge. Norwood ML26, Jonsered 2152, Husqvarna 353, 346,555,372,576 ET

August 03, 2014, 07:59:09 AM You'd probably want to go with .325 as opposed to 3/8". This is pretty common for ~50cc saws. As for gauge, might be good idea to stay in .058 just to keep the bars/chains you have the same. August 03, 2014, 11:50:04 AM I would like to go to a 18". Is there much difference between a .050 or .058 in real world cutting?I have a husky 61 from the early 80's. It has been a very good saw with very little breakdown. Just one ignition coil ,starter cord ropes and a plug or two. thecfarm

Is there much difference between a .050 or .058 in real world cutting?.....Mostly not - but some times with longer bars .050 tends to clog easier between the rails and not transport oil as well. Anyway, as the stuff is made, there is absolutely no advantage with running .050 over .058 in regular .325 or 3/8. The cutters are the same and cut the same kerf. The Lo-pro and NK stuff is of course another story. Information collector.

August 04, 2014, 10:42:27 AM Between .050 and .058 gauge, I'd go with whatever is most commonly used in your area. As others have mentioned, you won't be able to tell the difference when cutting. However, using what's commonly available gives you options if you need to grab a chain on short notice, or share one with a buddy. The 550xp is a nice saw. Somebody must like you to give you that for a birthday present.John If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. - Abraham Maslow cmb54

August 05, 2014, 09:51:36 AM Best to stay with .058 on the 545/550/2252/2253. It's the surest way to stay away from the narrow kerf bars that are common on the 400 series saws. If you have the narrow kerf bar on one of the 550 family saws you can NOT run a standard kerf chain, as it will bind up. Husqvarna-JonseredAshokan Turf and Timber845-657-6395 SawTroll
