I read the theory about Uta's tattoo and it focuses on the jester image. I think I saw a two headed serpent included in his tattoo, what do you think it symbolizes? I love your blog/theories/translations by the way. I didn't regret following you :)

(Uta’s tattoos reference post x, jester tattoo theory x.) And thank you kind anon, I’m really happy you enjoy this blog ♥ I’m sorry I took so much time, but this came out to be a long and meandering post going over a good chunk of the tattoo so be warned!

image

I think instead of a two-headed snake, there’s actually two different serpents framing the face, one with horizontal markings near the head and the other with more vertical lines/circles with dots. The first thing that I thought of is the caduceus/Rod of Hermes, from Greek and Roman mythology:

image

[The Caduceus] was an ancient astrological symbol of commerce and is associated with the Greek god Hermes, the messenger for the gods, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves. It was originally a herald’s staff, sometimes with wings, with two white ribbons attached. The ribbons eventually evolved into snakes in the figure-eight shape. (x)

In Roman iconography, it was often depicted being carried in the left hand of Mercury, the messenger of the gods, guide of the dead and protector of merchants, shepherds, gamblers, liars, and thieves. (x)

The part about gamblers and liars does fit in with Uta and the Pierrots and how they manipulate others. (The bottom border looks like an abacus too, doesn’t it?) The double snakes of the caduceus represents polar opposites - black and white, ying and yang, good and evil - and the unification and balance of the two forces to strike harmony. The coiled positions also indicate an expansion of knowledge and the “undulating dance of cosmic forces.” (x)

Another thing I noticed was how the bodies of the snakes form a giant 8. And that’s very interesting, because guess who are on the “8″ cards in the TG trump cards? Yup, four members of the Pierrots. Specifically,

  • Roma - Eight of Spades
  • Nico - Eight of Hearts
  • Itori - Eight of Clubs
  • Uta - Eight of Diamonds

I don’t have my own images, but @pipirupirucookie has a great meta post where she went over the different meanings behind the cards. (Many thanks again Camy!) The number eight alone can also represent infinity and the totality of the universe, as well as good luck and protection against bad luck.

image
image

There’s a lot going on in this tattoo. I’m not going to touch the cross design or the skull, except to mention that this is not the first, nor the second time that Uta and skulls have been connected in some way. (See pipirupirucookie’s post for more on that.)

image

I am interested in the face framed by the snakes though. It looks like the face has a bindi, a dot in the middle of the forehead (granted, the bindi is usually much closer to the eyebrows). In Hinduism the area between the eyebrows is a hot spot where all life experiences are gathered in total concentration. It is the sixth chakra known as the “Ajna” and is the seat of concealed wisdom. The Ajna is symbolized by a sacred lotus with two petals. The bindi represents the “third eye,” which sees what the physical eye cannot. It acts as a reminder to cultivate this inner sight to better understand life’s inner workings. (x, x, x)

image
image

Now, it’s just coincidence I noticed this. I was going over various Hindu symbolism and realized the fruit of the lotus plant and the flower/plant in the upper right corner looked suspiciously similar. The lotus plant plays a very large role in Hinduism and other Asian religions, and is often used to represent divine beauty and purity of the body, mind, and speech. As mentioned above, the Ajna is also represented by a two-petal sacred lotus. In this case I think the lotus reinforces the Hinduism symbolism in the face and bindi.

So what does this all amount to? In contrast to the “jester” tattoo that seemed to have an ominous meaning, to me this tattoo symbolizes balance of opposing natures, expansion of knowledge, and vision into the greater workings of the universe. It also reinforces Uta’s ties with the rest of the Pierrot gang through the “8” formed by the snakes, and possibly the skull. It is a tattoo of contemplation and quiet thought. It is a mass of contradictions, such as the Greco-Roman/Christian influences versus Hinduism, gambling and thieving versus purity of the body and mind. Yet it shows those contrasting forces as being intertwined and inseparable, balancing each other and ultimately making up one whole tattoo. I feel it showcases Uta’s complicated nature - “he who cannot live with you, nor without you.” This is the ghoul who has a history of savagery, has a permanent kakugan, describes seeing cannibalism as “fun,” and the manipulator who deliberately set off the events in TG for his amusement. This is also the ghoul who genuinely values the occasional human customers that wander into his shop, respected Touka for walking the tightrope between the ghoul and human worlds, and encouraged a younger ghoul to form ties with a human (see Asa’s chapter in the second TG novel).

Who knows what Uta is thinking? We certainly don’t. Whatever is on his mind, however, I’m sure he is seeing and planning further ahead than anyone else in the story.

On the topic of symbolism associated with Uta, apart from the Strength (8) card he also has the Sun (19), seen with the tattoo on his left chest and Hysy’s logo. I’m curious to see what the one on his abs and his right side symbolizes, and if Ishida-sensei’s comments hold true, Uta may have more tattoos on his back.

Hmmm I'm looking all the Trump Cards made by Ishida and for be specific all the clowns are drinking some I'm thinking if that means some or not or it's just because they like the blood vine and drink so much(?) Uta's different because he drinks on a skull hmm I'm thinking so much about that fact. Greetings Camy you've made a wondeful meta of Kanae associated with St. George and I should tell you what I was the one who sent that anon. Thanks! -3-

Hi, hi *-*/! (Anon, you’re so sweet, thank you so much for asking me things! I’m the one who has to thank you <3)

Oooh, you’re right! Look!

I didn’t notice this before. And I actually think that maybe it’s because they “celebrate” something.

People tends to drink something, like wine, when they celebrate something, right? Maybe it’s because they’re The Clowns, and in the final point, they were the ultimate winners because they had the fun they were looking.I assume that the liquid is blood wine. (Nico and Roma’s drinks are weird tho, but maybe it’s like… colored wine? Or other alcohol drink based in blood or they just posing)

If you’re wonder about the Skull, well. Every thing is a tarot card has a symbolism, either religious (the genesis is present in there too), mythological or legends (Like Merlin) and many others. The tarot isn’t only the meaning of the cards. Nonono, they have an history behind, meanings, cards that work together (Like the Magician and The High Priestess, cards of Hide and Touka, for example) Events with big importance, like in The Sun and the fact that in that “Two childrens, the soul and the body, joined together” I’ll probably make a bigger post about that later)

The meaning that i can give you is this:

  • “Skull: Long seen as a symbol of humanity’s mortality - the skull is a symbol that all things change and transition. Some cultures see the skull as the seat of the mind - the home of our thoughts. In this case, we cantranslate the skull to mean the death of unwanted thoughts.” (x) (It’s from the Death card)

He’s drinking from the skull. Maybe he’s drinking unwanted thoughts? Besides, it’s not the first time that Uta appear with a skull.

image

Maybe it’s like his symbol? Uta have this look, like betwett tattoos, piercings and an very unique aesthetic, maybe the skull is part of it.

Another thing that i want to put in here is the meaning of the eights, in general “tarotly” speaking.

image

This are the cards in the Minor Arcana. As you can see the order is maintained.

  • Swords = Spades (♠)
  • Cups = Hearts (♥)
  • Wands = Clubs (♣)
  • Pentacles = Diamonds (♦)

In short is this:

image

“Swords indicate that the focus is on intellectual matters and the approach taken will be more pragmatic and logical.”

We see a person tied up, surrounded by swords with acastle - symbol of authority - behind her; she stands in the mud,an image of humiliation and shame. The clue to this card is the blindfold - symbolizing confusion, oppressive ideas, isolation from other people in similar situations. Freedom begins when we throw off our blindfolds, when we see clearly how we have arrived in whatever situation we are in, whatwe have done, what others have done (particularly those who havebound us, but also others in similar situations) , and what we can doabout it now. The reversed Eight means, in general, liberation fromsome oppressive situation; primarily it refers to the first step of suchliberation, that is seeing things as clearly as possible.”

image

“Cups indicate that the focus is on relationships and emotions.”

“Whether we view the figure as moving away from the world, orinto action, the card symbolizes leaving a stable situation. Sometimes the upside down Eight indicates the simple negation ofthe card’s basic image - a refusal to leave some situation, a determinationto hang on even when we know deep inside that we havetaken all we can from it. Such a description characterizes manyrelationships.”

image

“Wands indicate that the focus is on energy, passion and motivation.”

“Romantically Waite calls them the ‘arrows of love’ . We can seethis especially as meaning action taken in a love affair, seduction, orproposals made and accepted. The arrows of love, when reversed, become arrows of jealousy and argument. The jealousy may derive from uncertainty and confusion, both in our feelings and in those of the other person.”

image

“Pentacles indicate that the focus is on practical matters, work and finances.”

Work, whether physical, artistic, or spiritual (the Sufi Idries Shahspeaks of ‘work’ as the most basic of Sufi doctrines) , cannot succeedif the person thinks only of the end result. When reversed the card suggests primarily impatience and the situations resulting from it: frustration, unfulfilled ambition, envy or jealousy.”

(From the Books “Tarot Foundations” and “Seventy-eight degrees of wisdom”)

Other thing that catches my eyes is something really basic and easy. Somethings that the four of them have in common (beside the drinks): the number.

They all are eights.

  • The number 8 is considered a lucky number. This is because of the shape of the kanji character for eight. The two strokes are wider at the bottom, suggesting a better time or better things to come in the future. (x)
  • In China, the 8 expresses the totality of the universe.
  • Number figuring the immutable eternity or the self-destruction. It represents also the final point of the manifestation.
  • The number 8 means the multiplicity, for the Japanese. (x)

It’s not a bad number, actually. , it’s a very good one. But, you know what card is the eye in the Mayor Arcana: The Force. (May the force be with you, i’m sorry i had to)

And you know what’s in the reverse meaning of the card?

Risk of a scam, fraud, deception or theft. Or betrayal.

So, there. Maybe it’s because of that they’re all eights. Another thing that bothers me a little bit it’s the fact that Souta isn’t here, well, are only four suits so it’s logical but still, why him? He isn’t drinking anything either.

Uta and The Clowns

tokyoghoulanalysis

As requested by a lovely and curious anon.

Being a clown is a juggling act, unless you are part of one of Japan’s strongest ghoul groups; Pierrot. The amazingly strong ghouls in this group are interesting beyond compare, each character being so enigmatic. After researching for hours, I’ve compiled all you need to know about the Clowns.

PIERROT

image

Pierrot is a character from way back when Pantomime began, and many other characters were made to accompany him (Columbina, Harlequin, Arlecchino, etc). Some characters have similarities to those of the clowns (eg. Columbina and Itori both being very intelligent and rarely wearing masks), though, due to inconsistencies in this theory (eg. Columbina cheating on Pierrot with Harlequin), I’ve scrapped it and labelled it as a coincidence. If it interests you or you can prove me wrong, feel free to, although after an hour of searching for even one tiny parallel you’ll probably give up as I did.

MEMBERS OF THE CLOWNS

UTA Uta is by far the most developed and one of the more present clowns in the series. He is very artistic, as is made obvious by his great mask design and construction. If you didn’t know, Uta’s name in Japanese (うた) means “song”. As a more peaceful ghoul, perhaps due to being witness to chaotic ghoul behaviour in other wards, he enjoys having humans around and even exhibits a visual liking to human food due to its colours and arrangement. He is seen wearing zebra-stripe patterned clothing (recently at the Auction, as an example). This is particularly interesting to me, as not only do zebras symbolise traits that are relevant to the mask-making ghoul (free, social, strong, playful, friendly, adaptable, determined), but it is also said that zebras can tell each-other apart from their stripes as they all have different patterns, although humans would never be able to tell one from another. This information ties in interestingly with his alias “No Face” from human investigators who always identify him, even through many physical appearance changes. Zebras also find strength in numbers, which could be the reason that when fighting alongside other clowns (Auction) he displays great ability. Uta is associated with the tarot card number 19 (the Sun - Upright: Fun, warmth, success, positivity, vitality/Reversed: Temporary depression, lack of success). In the Tokyo Ghoul Trump deck, Uta is featured as eight of diamonds. It is said that Eight of Diamonds people are the embodiment of the creative principal (the Sun), have the ability to overcome all their obstacles and win against all enemies, serve others honestly and faithfully (usually at their expense) and be powerful. Also, we must take note that Uta, despite being a clown, does not wear a clown mask (and never has). Interesting.

image

ITORIItori is the well-informed owner of the Helter Skelter bar. This gossipy young woman is usually a very talkative, sociable blood-wine drinker; however a hidden darker and slightly sadistic side is observable in some occasions. Her mask is very interesting, a large sharp toothed grin atop a long sharp chin, with a spade and heart (with three white dots) near the eye/temple area. It can also be assumed there is a club on the other side, however hard to see it may be. Spades symbolise fall, winter and the power of darkness. In Tarot perspective, they symbolize intellect, action, air, and death. Hearts, on the other hand, represent the warmth of spring and summer seasons and the power of light. In Tarot, hearts may also symbolize knowledge, love, life from water, and fertility, and in fortune-telling, joy. The Eight of Clubs, Itori’s trump card, is one of three ‘fixed’ cards of the symbolic deck that never change its birthplace. They also have very close association with King of Spades and Jack of Hearts. Eight of Clubs are allied with wisdom and the power of love and sacrifice.

image

NICONico is without a doubt a very flamboyant and sly character. He is portrayed as the derogative Japanese “onee” trope of very feminine homosexual men. He should not be underestimated, as he skilfully obtained information from Jason (and the Aogiri in general) about the One-Eyed King, even going so far to claim they know the their identity. Nico’s trump is the Eight of Hearts. People of this card feel the need to control and dominate and in areas of love and relationships Eight’s of Heart find their power; this need for power and control can also bring out the worst in them. It should also be known that Eight of Hearts who apply themselves do very well in large organizations.

image

ROMA Roma’s (somewhat loveable) clumsy and absent-minded behaviour made her a memorable character in the Tokyo Ghoul series. Fast-forward to her being with the clowns, and her description of Kaneki as “beautiful” in his depressive state reveals her to have a much more sinister side! Roma is featured on the Eight of Spades in the Tokyo Ghoul Trump deck, symbolizing ambitious power as a priority over relationships, adventurousness and self-expression.

image

SOUTA Due to a lot of mystery around Souta, I’ve decided to leave him last. Souta, as revealed by a flashback of Kaneki’s, reveals him to have played a role in the capture of Rize. He is very manipulative, even having lured a young woman named Ami into the Gourmet restaurant after having promised to marry her. He’s a character that has a general lack of information when compared to other characters, some even suggesting he may be Hide in disguise (which I definitely do not agree with). He appears to have a ‘G’ around one of the eyes on his mask. This may represent the symbolic meanings of the letter G (purpose, order, imagination, instinct, intuition and acting conventional). His alias, PG, has not been explained either. Unlike other characters, he has never taken off his mask and he lacks a lot of dialogue. Souta’s trump is the Five of Hearts, which represents a creative, intelligent and entertaining person with a lot of ideas. Actually, about that…

Souta’s Number Five: A recurring theme is seen in all but one of the Clowns’ trump cards; the number 8. Souta is the only member with a different number for his trump card, which is 5. According to numerology, five is the number of human beings. The number five symbolizes the four limbs and the head that controls the limbs and also the five senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch). Number 8, the number for the rest of the members, symbolises harmony, balance, the ability to make decisions, abundance and power. There is more mystery surrounding Souta than we originally thought. It is also unusual for a ghoul to even remotely associate with Kanou without being either his assistant or an experiment. Combined with the fact that 5 is the number of the human being, this indicates a possibility that Souta is an artificial one-eyed ghoul, perhaps Kanou’s very first experiment. It’s all speculation, but this could also explain why he was holding up two fingers after letting the steel beams fall onto Rize, Kaneki would be the second try at the process. Why else would a clown help out Dr. Kanou?

image

PREDICTIONS In Tokyo Ghoul, many key events were the result of the Clowns’ actions. Examples of times the Clowns have played a role in turning points in the story include the steel beams falling on Rize, prompting Kaneki to search for the Ghoul Restaurant (along with Tsukiyama), Kaneki’s capture and the search for Kanou’s lab. In :re, however, the Clowns haven’t appeared as active in scheming, apart from Roma and Nico spotting the Quinx at the nightclub and attending/fighting at the Auction. It seems as though the clowns, although once rising to power, have been far more inactive than usual. However, this may be a repeat of the first series, where they are involved much more than is shown. I doubt they’ll be gone for too long, and will make at least one more (if not many) appearances throughout the story, Kaneki will most likely make contact with them for whatever reason he may (most likely for information). I have no leads to go on other than the importance of their group in terms of power and status and their determination at the end of the last manga to continue pursuing “have more fun” and to “have the last laugh”.

CONCLUSION After analysing these characters, it becomes apparent that all of them have unique functions that make the group a sturdy whole. This, however, does not apply much to Souta, an oddly absent and distinct from the others. All of the eights in the Tokyo Ghoul Trump belong to the Clowns, however all fives are characters that are very set apart from others in the story (Maris Stella, for example). I suspect he will have a big role to play in the upcoming story (not like he doesn’t already). The Clowns aren’t joking around.

Hmmm Camy, what's the meaning of the 9 of diamonds? Focusing what that Trump Card made by Ishida is Koori Ui. I have heard what it is related to ''The curse of Scotland''. It is weird the fact what I have not found reliable information about that so it is better ask you anyway!

eightspringdays answered:

Hi again!! So sorry for the late reply, so sooorry :c

Aah, you flatter me, i don’t know that much actually :c But i’ll do my best to help you with this.

9 of Diamonds.

image

This card is indeed known as the “ The curse of Scotland”, there are plenty of theories about that, this is one:

“The first story goes that on the eve of the Battle of Culloden the Duke of Cumberland was playing cards with his senior staff.

A young officer arrived wanting to know the Duke’s orders for the battle. The Duke allegedly ordered “no quarter” to the Jacobites. Fearing the bloodbath to come the young officer wisely asked for the order to be written down.

In annoyance the Duke grabbed a playing card and wrote the order down. That card was supposed to be the nine of diamonds.”

Other:

The second story dates back to the ruthless massacre at Glencoe where Sir John Dalrymple, 1st Earl of Stair, ordered the massacre of the Glencoe MacDonalds.

The massacre caused an outcry across Britain and since the Stair coat of arms bears a striking resemblance to the nine of diamonds the card was forever to become known as the Curse of Scotland by association.

image

It’s the blue part, with nine diamonds. (x) (x)

Here are more theories (x) and they aren’t 100% reliable but this card is always a synonym of bad luck. Very bad luck.

It’s mostly related with death, war and annihilation. And…

Uta’s tattoos: The Jester

viper1123581321

(The images of the tattoos I use as reference are from here, posted by nimawalker, so go check those out!)

Yes, tattoos! This time I want to talk about the tattoos that Uta has on his fingers, and are quite small:

image

As I see it (please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong), there are two parts to this tattoo. The first being the face in the middle.

image

It looks an awful lot like a Jester to me, as it has the characteristic hat with bells on his head and all.

image

The other part is the thing behind him, with an open mouth, that looks scary. I’ll talk more about that later.

First, the Jester. The obvious connection to Uta here is his group, the clowns, since ‘clown’ is pretty much a synonym to ‘Jester’. However, his tattoo specifically shows a Jester, so I’ll talk about the Jester specifically. For those of you who don’t know, Jesters were a thing in the Middle ages in Europe (they already existed in earlier times, but the Jesters used in pop culture today are usually from the Middle ages). They were people at court, who’s job consisted of acting silly and making the people in the castle laugh. Though this may seem like an insignificant job, it’s also true that Jester were actually pretty powerful. They had the power of knowledge. A lot of Jesters had a close bond with their employer, the head of court. In that way, they got to know a lot of things and sometimes, they were even asked to give advice on war strategies. They knew a lot more than you would first expect if you looked at their job description.

I think this really applies to Uta, since he values information a lot, too. I won’t go too far into this, I’ve talked about this before in the other posts I made about Uta, but he knows a lot about his enemy, whoever his enemy may turn out to be (Aogiri, Anteiku, CCG, Clowns?).

Of course the association with fun isn’t that hard to find in the Jester. He makes people laugh for a living, so there’s that. With Uta, it’s not exactly the same, but it’s alike, even though it’s not as evident as with the Jester. Yes, what Uta does rarely makes others laugh, but he himself seems to find it very amusing. Like when he scared Kaneki (chapter 11):

image

I agree that he doesn’t really look amused in the image above, but why scare someone if it isn’t for your own amusement? This kind of also relates to the fact that he doesn’t really take any fights seriously, as seen when Anteiku invaded Aogiri and when Uta was fighting Hirako in the auction raid arc.

There were lots of ways for a Jester to make the court laugh, but they usually involved tricks. Again, Uta fits the part. Let’s take this little scene from chapter 112 as an example:

image
image

Uta had a problem: he wanted to kill the investigators, but the weapons would’ve made a loud noise. What did he do? He used a trick to distract the investigators, so he could sneak up behind them.

Or of course during the auction raid arc, where Uta put on the Arima mask (chapter 22):

image

He wanted to trick Hirako into thinking for a split second that he was Arima, probably so that Hirako would hesitate. Or of course, it was a trick to see if he hated Arima or not.

Now on to the second part, the beast in the background. What is it? It’s really difficult to tell exactly what it’s supposed to represent. So let’s think of the things we can say about it, without exactly knowing what it is. It’s big. If we use the small Jester head for reference, we notice that the head of the monster is A LOT bigger. It’s also clear that whatever this thing is, it’s not kind. The way it spreads it’s mouth as if to swallow the Jester, makes me think that this beast doesn’t have any good intentions. It’s evil. Just a side note for this, the first thing I thought of when I saw the beast, was that it was Leviathan (based on nothing at all), a biblical sea monster, that some people have taken to symbolize pure evil (while others think it just symbolizes the creative power of God).

image

(Just a picture of Leviathan, to illustrate) Anyway, moving on. The last fact we know that it’s seen behind the Jester.

Now, the real question, what does this all mean? If we can assume that this monster represents evil, I think this means that something evil is looming of the Jester, and the Jester represents Uta. So, that means that either Uta’s is being influenced by something evil, or something bad will happen to him. Although I can’t think of something evil that could influence him, it’s not out of the question, as his motives for doing, well, anything, haven’t been revealed. Honestly, I really hope nothing bad happens to him, but this is Tokyo Ghoul, and in Tokyo Ghoul, bad things happen.

This is it, for now! I hope you enjoyed it! If you have anything to add or correct, feel free to do so!

Anonymous asked:

I thought that the only person related with The Sun was Touka. She appeared with the number 19 twice.

eightspringdays answered:

Hi, hi!

Yes, but Uta too. (Touka is more related with the The High Priestess and if you look the meaning and the history of the card, is make more sense to her have that card than the Sun. Actually, in the Fool’s Journey, two cards are almost always present: The Magician and the The High Priestess)

Uta is related with the Sun here.

image

From this post (x)

And here again.

image

And again here.

image

So yeah, Uta is the character that have the Sun related to him the most. Touka have one here (As i say like million times…i can’t see any number so i’m guided for what people say actually)

image

From here (x)

But in the end of the first part of the manga, she had this number.

image

I think… think that it’s a two? But, in any way, the High Priestess in the card that most related to Touka, not only for the meaning. Tarot cards have a much more than just key words. For example, in the Sun part of the Journey the Magician and The High Priestess came to reunited with the Fool. The Magician represents the masculine part and the intelligence, and the High Priestess in the female part and the feeling, together they reunited in the Sun along with the Fool.

So, i believe that Touka had the 19 back in the end because she indeed reunite with him in :re later and she also started a new life.

I think that Uta fits more with the Sun that Touka, just for the meaning and the purpose of the card, as his intentions as a character and his connection with Kaneki/Haise. Uta is that character that i don’t really know how to interpret but i do think that his relation with that card is put there to mean something. Maybe his intentions, maybe his true desire.

And also because the Sun as a symbol very powerful too, Uta has the Sun over his chest, right over his heart and probably means that he has started a new life, he has strength and knowledge. And that is also one of the powerful meaning of the Sun as a card.

The two of them have being related with that card because the two of them started a new life. In any way, this card is very positive and tends to be related with good things.

And for Touka (because she’s the Ace of Wands), this relation with both cards meaning that she have a big improved in her life, after pass through difficult things, she was capable to defeat them.

In short, Touka is related with the High Priestess in a “character” level, but with the Sun in a “situation” level. And Uta is more lrelated in a “character” level with the Sun…I really hope that this makes sense.

In the French history of cards the Jack of Diamonds is the representation of Hector, the mythological greek prince of Troy. Also known as the “Breaker of Horses”, and the greatest fighter in the War of Troja.

HNG that’s one point in the manga that I’ve been confused about as well. I feel like Ishida sensei didn’t give us a lot of information on the clown crew but here’s what I can deduce.

So we know there are ghouls like the anteiku where they just want to live harmoniously and then there’s groups like the aogiri tree that are violently fighting against the CCG and humans in general. The pierrot is different. You can argue that they are neither good or bad, more like a chaotic neutral so to say but in the situation with anteiku vs the CCG they play a villanous role. But you can also argue that they are the most villanous characters in the entire series.

Before Kaneki blacks out in the scene when he loses to Arima he remembers seeing a member of the pierrot at the scene where rize died.

image

This hints that the pierrot was the one responsible for rize’s death and perhaps they were also ones that hooked up doctor kanou with rize’s body so that he could experiment for the aogiri tree. We also know that Nico is a part of the Pierrot and at the time had been undercover at the aogiri tree. When Kaneki confronted him he had said that he was only there because he was interested in yamori/jason. When aogiri Tree falls and Jason dies, Nico’s interests shift towards Kaneki whom he says has “become more of a man than yamori”.

Nico’s motto is to “live for beautiful people or live beautifully”. In a way it reflects the motives of the pierrot because they really don’t have a clear one. From what we can tell they sold out the anteiku to the CCG simply because it amused them. Though they all ‘liked’ kaneki, they were searching for ‘tragedy’ and a much more ‘depressing scene’

image

They don’t really have a moral good or bad, they simply do what’s interesting; searching for chaos. In some ways they resemble batman’s joker. Therefore you can argue that they are actually the most evil characters in the series— not the CCG nor the Aogiri tree.

image

In a sense the pierrot was the mastermind behind this entire tragedy. They were here the whole time but Ishida sensei had us focused on the aogiri tree and the CCG as the antagonists so we all overlooked the true villains. The Clown goul gang was responsible for Kaneki being turned into a half ghoul. Responsible for rize becoming experimental meat, for the clash between the CCG and anteiku and probably much more. They had their members in the Anteiku, the Aogiri tree, and standing by watching it all fall together. They sat back and enjoyed the play they directed, with the characters that they placed; all without any of the participants knowing that they were being controlled.

The Aogiri tree is fighting for ghoul power in Japan.

Anteiku is fighting to protect their friends.

CCG is fighting to exterminate ghouls and protect people.

The pierrot? They are fighting for fun.

Black and White: Examining the Helter-Skelter Clowns

sasakanepede

It’s been several months since Ishida Sui threw one of the greatest curve-balls in manga storytelling history (in my opinion, anyway - I’m no expert on manga) through the machinations of the Pierrot, or Clowns. Theories about their identity, motivation, and connections to the real world have been thrown around and discussed before (for example, here), so a lot of what I will be recapping is nothing new. That said, I have my own interpretations that have minor differences to what I’ve seen or read before. Thus, I will be writing this from the ground up, which will also be to the benefit of those who have not heard of these theories.

At the end of Tokyo Ghoul, it was revealed to readers that much and more of the happenings in the story were due to the Clowns, a gang of ghouls who wore masks that were… Clowny (go figure). The original Clowns were thought to have been exterminated by none other than Arima Kishou himself.

image

Uta, Itori, Nico, Souta and Roma, however, seemingly survived this operation, masquerading instead as “regular” ghouls (we don’t know if they were part of the original Clowns, and at this point it does not matter). They’ve kept a low profile while secretly stirring up trouble in a variety of ways, such as:

-causing Yamori to be caught

-dropping the beams on Rize and Kaneki (Souta)

-raising the possibility that the beams incident was no accident and directing Kaneki into a very close brush with death (Itori)

-directing Kaneki to Kanou’s lab, which resulted in his discovering that Rize was alive, that he was only a successful experiment in kakuhou transplanting, causing him to lose his mind at the lab and question his purpose for the many chapters after

In their own words, the Clowns intend to “get the last laugh”. And at a glance, it seems like they’re simply causing chaos because there’s “no point to living if things aren’t interesting”. It seems like the world is just a joke to them, and the desperate struggles of others an enjoyable sitcom.

A deeper look reveals something much more sinister. It begins with Itori, who runs a bar by the name of Helter-Skelter. Helter-Skelter is the name of a Beatles song released in 1968, an innocuous track that was interpreted by a Charles Manson to have hidden messages. Manson, who lead a cult called the Family, believed these hidden messages prophesied the coming of a racial war between Caucasians (Whites) and African-Americans (Blacks). He planned to attract White youths to the family, and in this way starve the Blacks of sexual access to Whites. Manson believed this would cause the Blacks to commit violence against whites, which would escalate as Whites strike back in fatal retaliation. The more militant Blacks would then take advantage of the situation to cause racist Whites and non-racist Whites to fight each other, and then eliminate the surviving whites, creating a Black only land.

Throughout all of this, Manson and his Family would be safely hidden away until the war’s end. At this point, they would rise and, being “naturally superior” than Blacks in their view, rule over them. Manson and his Whites would effectively “get the last laugh”. Manson’s Family committed brutal murders in an attempt to set the prophesied war into motion.

If this is starting to sound familiar, that’s because there are many existing parallels between the seemingly random actions of the Clowns, and Manson’s Helter-Skelter scenario. In the world of Tokyo Ghoul, there is heavy racial tension between the naturally superior Ghouls (Whites) and the inferior humans (Blacks). Spurred on by the background machinations of the Clowns (Whites of the Family), the human-sympathizing Ghouls of Anteiku (non-racist Whites) come into repeated conflict with the human-hating Ghouls (such as the Restaurant, or the Aogiri Tree) of the story (racist Whites), while the CCG (militant Blacks) seek to eliminate all of the Ghouls regardless of whether they sympathize with humans or not. All the key players line up in parallel with the Helter-Skelter scenario.

The Clown’s goals are suddenly not-so-random. It is my belief, based on Helter-Skelter, that the Clowns are aiming for the different ghoul factions and the CCG to wipe each other out, before emerging from hiding and ruling over the naturally inferior humans, having eliminated competition from other ghouls. In fact, if Ishida were to follow even more closely to Manson’s grand plans, then the Clowns could even be planning for the CCG to be the ultimate survivor of the conflict, before subjugating them. Remember that while it might seem like the CCG and humans are in a good position overall, should the CCG fall, the rest of humanity are ill-equipped to handle ghouls. And while the common ghoul lives a harsh and dangerous life, it seems like the stronger or more clever/well off ghouls rarely ever face the same level of threat. The fact that a Gourmet ghoul restaurant could even exist in the first place suggests this to be the case (and it wasn’t the CCG that exterminated them, but Kaneki). The auction in the recent chapters is another good example of this. Aogiri’s existence, organization V’s existence, and Tsukiyama mentioning in the novels that his family is deeply integrated into the government all suggest that, in reality, ghouls face very little real threat from the CCG. Little enough, anyway, that the Clowns could see themselves emerging victorious versus the CCG.

So I’ve attributed the role of the Whites to the ghouls, and the role of the Blacks to the humans. If we were to take up the racist views of Manson and co., then would it not make more sense for the “good” humans to be the Whites, and the “evil” ghouls to be the Blacks? The above reddit link suggests this and puts forth some good arguments for it, but fails to reconcile the fact that in Manson’s scenario, there are two factions of whites, who war on each other. There is only (currently) one faction of humans, and it is unlikely that even if Haise eventually regains his memories, that a significant portion of the CCG would split to align with him if he should turn fugitive. To stay racially consistent, you cannot have the ghoul Clowns be white at the same time as the human CCG. Finally, Kaneki’s hair colour, used by Ishida to indicate how “ghoul” he is, is black when his human side is dominant and white when his ghoul side is dominant. Black is thus associated with humans while White is associated with ghouls.

But then what about the CCG and their white coats? Given that the militant Blacks in Manson’s scenario are still, well, black, and therefore inferior, we can reconcile this by noting that everything the CCG does to combat the ghouls are achieved by imitating them. Quinques are made of ghoul weaponry, imitation products that aren’t as strong as the original. Similarly, wearing a white coat could be an extension of this imitation game.

Uta’s neck tattoo, which reads that he “can neither live with you, nor without you”, reminds us that a ghoul cannot live without humans, but living side by side with them is also not possible (in his view). Should the Clown’s goals succeed, Uta will have made his personal statement into reality: neither living beside humans, nor away from them, having ready access to those now placed not by his side but beneath his heels.

/end drivel

P.S. should be pretty clear that Uta didn’t die from the knife in the face in chapter 18 of :re as he’s more than just a bit character, the same way Kaneki and Amon didn’t die at the end of TG.

What do you think of the five of hearts the card of Souta? Isn't strange Souta is the only clown who was not associated with the number 8? Plus one of the main meaning of his card is "not being able to escape from the past" or also "depression" "lost". Plus there is a cage in the back like the one mentioned by Kanou. If he is Furuta maybe he is working for multiple organizations.

( @pipirupirucookie ‘s meta on the Pierrot’s tarot card symbolism, with a little on Souta at the very end. Camy, feel free to add to this post!)

Oh, I didn’t know what Souta’s card meant! Hmm, interesting (I’m saying that word a lot today, aren’t I? Thank you everyone for your asks and interesting ideas!) Souta is definitely an anomaly within the Pierrot gang. He’s the only one we haven’t seen unmasked, and like you pointed out he’s not on a 8 card like the other Pierrot members. And that bird cage is very suspicious…. I’m still a little hesitant to say Souta or Furuta is working as a mole for different organizations. We’ve only “seen” Furuta in TG:re 50, and there’s probably a lot more going on behind the scenes. If the meanings you listed apply to him, what sort of past could he have had? :o

This is part of the omake between Takatsuki Sen and her manager Shiono, the guy who Sasaki and Furuta approach at the end of tg:re 59. This is why people think that he’s human and unaware of Takatsuki Sen’s half-ghoul nature and duel life as Eto.Which would mean he’s nervous and confused that the CCG showed up and asked for his boss because it’s just a weird sort of thing to happen and Kaneki and Furuta’s smiles are creepy as fuck, not because he thinks they found out a secret. Unless something has changed since this took place. It’d be funny if this guy was a ghoul and Eto, of course, knew that, but he couldn’t tell she was a half-ghoul because of something weird about natural half-ghouls, and she was just playing him. That’d be a very Eto thing to do. But I see no indication that that’s the case.
