About us
Iqra Fund establishes high quality self-sustaining school systems in the remote, mountainous regions of northern Pakistan. We partner with local governments, community leaders, parents, and teachers to invest in long term student success, improving generational prosperity. As the only educational INGO in this socially- and culturally-conservative war-torn region, we are dedicated to empowering all students, especially girls. We envision a world where girls are more valuable as educated society members than they are working in the fields. They will be economically independent, in charge of their own fertility, and empowered to improve quality of life for themselves, their families, and their communities. They will be global leaders in mitigating climate change as champions of long term sustainable education. We serve remote villages in the Gilgit-Baltistan province of Pakistan. These marginalized tribal communities live primarily as subsistence-based farmers, with some additional income from trekking tourism. We partner with communities who request our support, providing access to education for both girls and boys, with a primary goal of ensuring 100% of the girls in these villages attend school. The children are often the first in their families to receive an education.

Together, Belqis and Amina remind us what’s possible when a girl from the mountains is given the chance to rise. 👏 🏔️ 🎓
Genevieve Walsh 2mo
🏔️ From the Mountains of Hushe to New Heights 🎓 Two remarkable Iqra Fund alum from Baltistan are charting new paths this month, each representing what’s possible when girls in the most remote mountain communities have access to education and opportunity. Belqis Bano, from the Hushe Valley, has just begun her university studies in Pre-Medical. 👏 Since childhood, she has dreamed of becoming a doctor to bring healthcare to the mountains. “I want to ensure no woman in my village suffers due to a lack of medical facilities.” Supported by Iqra Fund since her early schooling, Belqis is now preparing for the competitive medical entrance exams and aims to establish a healthcare center in her village. Her story embodies the long-term impact of investing in girls’ education by not only changing individual lives but transforming entire communities. 🏔️ Meanwhile, Amina Hanif, also from Hushe and granddaughter of the legendary mountaineer Little Karim, reached a new summit last week - quite literally. She successfully climbed Yalung Ree (5,630 m) in Nepal, her first international expedition. “Iqra Fund gave us the confidence to prove ourselves — it made us believe that we can also fly, and the sky is the limit.” Amina’s journey from scholarship student to mountaineer continues her family’s legacy of courage and determination. Her climb is a testament to how education and confidence can empower girls to pursue any horizon, from classrooms to summits. ✨ At Iqra Fund, these are the stories that drive our work: girls who rise, lead, and bring lasting change to their communities. #IqraFund #GirlsEducation #Leadership #Baltistan #Pakistan #WomenInSTEM #WomenInMountaineering #Impact #EducationForAll

Keeping Schools Open: Iqra Fund's response to historic flooding in Pakistan With exceptional heat this summer in northern Pakistan, floods, rockfall, and debris flows are reaching villages in Gilgit-Baltistan daily, destroying homes, crops, ancient orchards, and critical infrastructure. These floods have already disrupted local food production and displaced families in our partner communities, marking the beginning of what is projected to be the most severe flooding season on record. Disasters like this bring tragedy and impossible choices. Parents are forced to decide: keep children in school, or pull them out to help rebuild homes and croplands. This flood cycle will likely last until cool temperatures return to the high mountains in late fall. And the disruption to life is wide-reaching. Currently, our team is engaged across the region to ensure our schools stay online and students are able to continue their studies as their families recover. This season it has become clear that our partner schools are more than just classrooms and places of learning. Our schools are a place of safety, stability, and strength. These places provide: - Continuity of education, keeping students on track when crises hit. - Clean drinking water and hygiene access, preventing disease when water sources are destroyed or contaminated. - Community resilience, a place and support system that families can rely on for stability amidst uncertainty. In stride with regional partners supporting flood recovery, Iqra Fund remains focused on building long-term resilience. For us this means: - Keeping schools open and functional so children remain in class. - Rapidly repairing damaged infrastructure with trusted engineers and local teams, rebuilding classrooms within weeks, not years. - Emboldening local leaders with strategic planning skills and a toolkit to respond to risk, support families in recovery, and shape public infrastructure development. - Building climate-smart schools designed to withstand earthquakes, floods, and future displacement. - Reducing vulnerability for families by ensuring their children stay in school through disasters, strengthening their long-term ability to recover and thrive. “If we lose a school or a water system, our goal is rapid recovery with minimal disruption. Education and building strong local and regional leaders is our strongest lasting contribution to regional disaster risk reduction and resilience in Baltistan. We want to make sure the folks we partner with don’t have to make trade-offs that change the trajectory of their families away from the opportunities that having an education unlocks.” We are closely monitoring the situation across our partner communities and coordinating with local leaders and regional partners. Schools remain a cornerstone of resilience in this flood season, offering stability for children and families as they rebuild their lives amidst devastating loss. In Gratitude, The Iqra Fund Team www.iqrafund.org

Happy Independence Day, Pakistan. From all of us at Iqra Fund.
Genevieve Walsh 4mo
Today, we join the people of Pakistan in celebrating the country’s independence, honoring its history, resilience, and the vision of a brighter future for all. In the farthest reaches of the Karakoram mountains, in Baltistan where Iqra Fund works, this day carries a profound meaning. The Balti people have long been custodians of some of the most remote and strategically important lands in Pakistan. Yet for generations, these communities, especially girls, have been excluded from the promise of education and opportunity. Iqra Fund was founded on the belief that a strong and independent Pakistan depends on the inclusion of all its people. For over a decade, we have partnered with Balti communities to build schools, train teachers, and open pathways to higher education. Today, thousands of first-generation students, many of them young women, are stepping into leadership roles in education, agriculture, health, and local governance. The story of Pakistan’s independence is still being written, not only in its cities but in the high mountain villages where a girl takes her first steps into a classroom, where a father donates land for a school, and where a teacher walks miles through snow to reach her students. These moments are acts of nation-building, quiet but powerful contributions to the country’s strength, unity, and progress. As we celebrate this Independence Day, we recommit ourselves to working alongside the Balti people and all our partners across Pakistan so that every child has the opportunity to learn, to lead, and to carry forward the nation’s promise. Happy Independence Day, Pakistan. From all of us at Iqra Fund. Mohammad Ghulam Bashir Ahmed

🇵🇰 Education in Pakistan: Challenges & Iqra Fund’s Progress: A recent Dawn News analysis highlights persistent challenges in Pakistan’s education sector: a national DEPI score of just 53/100 (“low” category), stark public‑funding gaps, poor learning outcomes, uneven infrastructure, and a widening rural‑urban divide. With over 25 million children out of school, Pakistan faces an urgent crisis. Against this backdrop, Iqra Fund is working to turn the tide: 👏 Strengthening early learning: Six new Early Childhood Centers launched in remote mountain communities to build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy. 👏 Bridging infrastructure gaps: Our first regional science lab now serves 544 public-school students, addressing the lack of labs in rural districts. 👏 Supporting equity: University scholarships are empowering first-generation scholars—especially girls—to access quality higher education. Enhancing governance: Through our BALTI‑LED community leadership program, local leaders are driving educational improvements in real time. Read more in Iqra Fund's 2025 Mid-Year Impact Report here: https://lnkd.in/ge93dzvS These are small but vital steps toward improving reading, numeracy, infrastructure, and equitable access - key levers named in the Dawn DEPI findings. We still have much to do, but learning from data, working locally, and collaborating with partners gives us hope that systemic change is possible.

{if} first-generation girls have access to education, they don’t just change their own lives. They transform entire communities. At Iqra Fund, our theory of change begins with education as a catalyst for long-term, community-led development. We currently support 93 first-generation girls from remote and underserved areas of northern Pakistan to access and complete their education, often as the first in their families or villages to do so. Pakistan has the second highest number of out-of-school children in the world, with girls in rural regions disproportionately affected. In response, Iqra Fund works in partnership with communities to identify promising students, provide scholarships, and build pathways to higher education and leadership. Our model emphasizes sustained mentorship, local ownership, and a commitment to ensuring that girls not only attend school but thrive. Educated girls strengthen families, lead communities, and help break the cycle of poverty for future generations. Learn more and get involved at www.iqrafund.org

In Pakistan, over 23 million children are out of school, nearly half of the school-aged population. The reasons are complex, but one thing is clear: we cannot solve this crisis without reaching the children in the most remote and underserved areas. This month, Iqra Fund took a meaningful step forward in Arindo Village, located at the very end of Basha Valley after more than a day’s drive up a remote mountain road from Skardu. For years, a non-functioning government school building stood in Arindo. It was one of many ghost schools we’ve seen across northern Pakistan. As our Country Director, Ghulam Muhammad, shared after his visit to Arindu last week: “There is a school building but no teacher. These beautiful, bright children are left to play in the mud, with no access to the education they so deserve.” Thanks to the advocacy of community leaders and Iqra Fund’s partnership with the local government, we’ve hired the first teachers for this school. For the first time, children in Arindo will walk into a classroom, sit at a desk, and begin to learn. We believe education is not a privilege, but a right. And we know from experience: it only takes one teacher to change the course of a child’s future and an entire village’s. As we continue our work, we remain committed to community-driven, government-aligned solutions that move the needle — village by village, child by child.
Mohammad Ghulam 8mo
Alhamdulillah; Heartfelt thanks to the Iqra Fund management; especially Dr. Genevieve, for considering this urgent and heartfelt request. Arindu Gond, a forgotten village with a school but no teacher, now sees hope. These children deserve education, a future. Appointing even one teacher is not just help; it’s a life changing act of dignity and opportunity. Thank you for believing in them. Your support means the world.

In the remote mountain villages of northern Pakistan, the effects of climate change are not abstract—they are lived realities. Melting glaciers, unpredictable seasons, and water scarcity threaten livelihoods, health, and the future. At Iqra Fund we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools in building climate resilience. That’s why we’re investing in the next generation of leaders—young women and men who are studying agriculture, health, environmental science, and community planning to meet these challenges head-on. Together, we’re not just educating students. We’re cultivating stewards of the land, protectors of their communities, and changemakers for a more sustainable world. Happy Earth Day from all of us at Iqra Fund. #EarthDay2025 #IqraFund #ClimateResilience #EducationForChange #GirlsInSTEM #EnvironmentalJustice
