Click For Summary SUMMARY

The correct IUPAC name for the compound CH3CH2C(CH3)2CH(CH2CH3)CH3 is 2-ethyl-3,3-dimethylpentane. This conclusion is based on identifying the longest carbon chain, which consists of five carbon atoms, confirming it as a pentane rather than a hexane. The confusion arises from the structural interpretation of the substituents, but the naming follows the IUPAC rules for prioritizing the longest chain and the correct placement of substituents.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of IUPAC nomenclature rules
  • Familiarity with organic chemistry structures
  • Knowledge of substituent naming conventions
  • Ability to identify the longest carbon chain in organic compounds
NEXT STEPS
  • Study IUPAC nomenclature for complex organic compounds
  • Learn about identifying longest carbon chains in organic structures
  • Explore examples of naming branched alkanes
  • Review common mistakes in organic compound naming
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, organic chemists, and anyone studying IUPAC nomenclature for organic compounds will benefit from this discussion.

aatari Messages 73 Reaction score 3 I don't understand why CH3CH2C(CH3)2CH(CH2CH3)CH3 is 2 ethyl-3,3 dimethyl - pentane and not 3-methyl-4,4-dimethylhexane. When I expand the condensed formula above and count the longest carbon chain, it seem it is a hexane rather than pentane. Can someone please clarify?

mfb Mentor Insights Author Messages 37,415 Reaction score 14,250 Unless I misunderstand the CH2CH3 part, you are right with the hexane part: CH3 - CH2 - C(CH3)2 - CH(CH2CH3) - CH3 Although I would have expected, 3,3,4-trimethyl-hexane. Here it is. Last edited: Jan 21, 2019
