The Campus Safety Officer supports a safe, secure, and welcoming campus environment by conducting building and grounds patrols, responding to incidents, assisting community members, and maintaining accurate safety documentation. This position collaborates closely with Residence Life staff, Facilities, and—when necessary—local law enforcement to safeguard university property and promote the well-being of Baker students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Officers are expected to deliver exceptional customer service while upholding university protocols, safety standards, and emergency procedures. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Campus Patrols & Facility Monitoring and Maintenance Support: Complete assigned campus patrol routes, inspecting buildings and grounds for safety, security, and custodial concerns; Document issues in security reports and communicate urgent matters to Facilities on call; Respond promptly to incident calls—generally within minutes depending on severity—and provide assistance at the designated location 
  • Community Assistance & Emergency Response: Provide courteous, timely support to students, faculty, staff, and visitors; Answer the Campus Safety phone line (typically within four rings) and route urgent matters to the appropriate department as needed; Work in partnership with Residence Life staff during emergencies, student incidents, and crowd management situations. 
  • Building Access Management: Lock and unlock university buildings according to supervisor direction and approved schedules in the Ad Astra platform; Verify building security during and after patrols. 
  • Safety System Inspections: Conduct routine inspections of safety systems such as fire panels, boilers, emergency lighting, and other critical infrastructure; Notify supervisors and Facilities of deficiencies or safety hazards that require attention. 
  • Reporting & Documentation: Complete narrative logs, incident reports, and activity summaries in a timely and accurate manner using the Maxient system; Record work orders, observations, protocols executed, and other relevant information during each shift 
  • Vehicle & Equipment Oversight: Manage the check-in/check-out process for university vehicles, including issuing keys, collecting logs, and completing post-trip inspections; Operate and maintain Campus Safety vehicles responsibly; Maintain control of master keys and other departmental equipment and materials. 

Qualifications: 

  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in English. 
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors. 
  • Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced or emergency environment. 
  • Reliability, professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality and trust. 
  • Ability to follow established protocols and retain procedural knowledge. 
  • Adherence to FERPA guidelines, maintaining records in strict confidence 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to walk for extended periods and climb stairs. 
  • Ability to reach, stoop, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. 

Other Requirements 

  • At least 21 years of age. 
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. 
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check. 
  • Flexibility in scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays. 
  • Willingness to perform additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel. 
  • Maintain professional appearance
